Tabarnak started out as an assessment and correction of an old concept by George Wilkens. This typeface was designed to be used as the page heading font for MyFonts. Originally only the letters needed to make up the required phrases were drawn. Then amazingly enough, people started asking where they could get the font, so I decided to complete the character set, and named it Softie. This name was chosen because the round and rather bulbous shapes that make up the letters reminded me of marshmallows. Softie, almost good enough to eat. The Bold version, called Softie Bloated, was added in late 2003. Rumor has it that the name came to Steve after Thanksgiving dinner.

The original idea for Alda came from exploring an alternative approach to generating different typeface weights by adapting the characteristics of physical objects. I was interested to find out how far this could be pushed before the letters became a parody of what they referenced. Initially I took this treatment very literally, with the boldest weight expressing the tension of bent steel, and the lightest being as spineless as a rubber band. This allowed me to infuse each weight with unique characteristics, where the bold is robust and angular, and the light is delicate and soft.

The font SweynheymPannartz is strongly modeled after an example Conrad Sweynheym and Arnold Pannartz used in their early printing venture in Subiaco, Italy which began around 1465. Their efforts were supported by Pope Sixtus the IV after they enthusiastically printed more books than they could sell. They not only brought printing to Italy, but also developed the first Roman style type. This font has over 600 defined glyphs to cope with modern needs, and also the ability to use several abbreviations common to that period. It also has an alternate minuscule “k” more modern in appearance for those that find the original too unusual.

BlusterLeft and BlusterRight are distortions of the font ConcavexCaps. Both are caps only, but some of the shapes on the lower-case keys differ from the corresponding shapes on the upper-case keys. They family was named Bluster because I thought they have a wind-blown, flopping-in-the-breeze look. Others may see them as spooky or eerie, something that could be used for Halloween.
