Sometimes type designs are set aside as one project takes priority over another and occasionally it becomes overlooked. One such example is a set of extra bold, sans serif stencil characters drawn out in 2017. Regrettably, as much time has passed, no backstory can be applied to this typeface. It was checked against existing releases in the Jeff Levine Fonts library and didn’t seem to have been re-worked for any subsequent release. With this in mind, Baggage Claim JNL makes its belated appearance and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

I was commissioned by the Emporium (now Macys) to digitize Radiant Bold Extra Condensed (originally designed by Robert Middleton in 1940) for use in their Sunday supplement to the San Francisco Examiner. For several years, I stubbornly refused to add the lowercase letters to the font, because I thought it looked best just used with caps, but finally relented, added the lowercase letters and at the same time created two more weights as well: Light and Medium. Used very large and carefully, these faces can be quite elegant.

The rather wide, caps-only Monotype Engravers family imitates scripts that evolved from copperplate and steel plate engravers hands of the nineteenth century, which were a quite expressive medium! Monotype Engravers' letters show a strong contrast between thick and thin strokes and have sharply cut serifs. In 1899, Robert Wiebking (who worked for a number of foundries in his time) designed an all-caps typeface named Engravers Roman."" Shortly thereafter, American Type Founders, Inc. (ATF) released another successful ancestor of this design in 1902, ""Engravers Bold,"" designed by Morris Fuller Benton. Engravers Bold was also released by the Barnhart Brothes & Spinder foundry. Also made available by Lanston Monotype at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Engravers faces soon became a popular choice for letter heads, advertising and stationery.

News Ticker JNL was inspired by some 1930s film footage of the famous electronic message sign that surrounded the New York Times building in Times Square. A blank panel is located on both the regular and broken vertical bars for use in spacing between words.

Alterglam is one of my all time favorite fonts, although I didn't think so at first. The font appeared as a modification of my other default font. But over time, the font turned into an independent work. Moreover, the font began to live its own life and constantly demanded attention. The new font “The Best We Could Do” was created by artist and author Thi Bui who used the font in the graphic novel by the same name. The font is brush-script handwriting font which displays human personality rendered with bold confident strokes full of passion and expression. Chank’s work on this font captured Bui’s distinctive textual style and also saved her a ton of headache and time in inking. A debut memoir that tells the story of one family’s journey from their war-torn home in Vietnam in the 1970s to their new lives in America, the autobiographical book is lauded for its heart-breaking exploration of identity, family, and home. Bui ties her modern life with the multi-generational experiences of her family, weaving together the emotional threads of their relationships to find clarity in her current day. “The Best We Could Do” graphic novel is published by Abrams ComicArts and is available wherever fine books are sold.

Imagine being printer in the early nineteenth century, your stock isn’t the finest, your lead characters are worn out: Voilá Kandidat Rough. But wait, Kandidat isn’t the usual scan-an-old-book,-put-the-glyphs-in-a-font-and-you’re-done-font. Kandidat Rough has a variety of whopping 14 alternates for most characters. Our algorithm changes the letters automatically. All you have to do is turn on Contextual Alternates in your layout app. The algorithm is the best we’ve seen so far, and it’s so good that even same words appear in different forms. And should by coincidence words have the same glyphs, just assign a different Style Set to the first letter, and all other letters in the word will change as well (well, it depends a bit on your software). The mechanism isn’t perfect and maybe we stretched OpenType capabilities a bit over the top, but we yet haven’t seen any better routine for switching letters on the fly. Is it worth to mention that Kandidat Rough not only speaks English, but also German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Croatian, Turkish and most likely some other languages? Maybe. And now imagine you are sick of the rugged print experience Kandidat Rough delivers: go for Kandidat. This is our Scotch-ish ancestor the Rough version was made from. A sturdy, friendly, round, warm friend from the beginning of the nineteenth century. A bit dark, maybe. You will like it. Kandidat has the aforementioned type set plus complete Baltics, Eastern Europe and Cyrillic. Plus a couple of gimmicks like fleurons, stars, circled numbers, arrows, and, and, and… Kandidat Regular additionally has small caps for Latin based scripts (not Cyrillic). The spick and span Kandidat font set also consists of Regular, Italic and Bold cuts. The bold cut is on the very bold side and can nicely be used for headings, whereas Italic is a great companion for Regular. It took us some time and trouble to finish this project, but after all we are very proud of our little feat and hope you will enjoy Kandidat as much as we do. Enjoy!
