When I first approached this design back in 2003 I wrote myself a design brief that called for a simple sans serif "avec serifs" (with serifs). Its emphasis needed to be on text usage but to be at home in display sizes. A range of weights with a controlled step from one weight to the next, uniform character sets, spacing and kerning throughout the range. Attention to openness of counter spaces would be paramount to work in text sizes. Matching italics should be true italics not merely slanted - with a cursive feel. During extensive testing I decided to include a suite of ligatures to eliminate the hairline gaps that occur between slab serifs at display sizes. The user may activate "Discretionary Ligatures" or "Stylistic Set 1" for ligatures that are not included in the Standard Ligatures (ff, fi, fl, ffi and ffl). Dahliana is a humanist serif type family that has the heritage of classic Old Style and Transitional type while having the crisp lines and functionality of contemporary fonts. Its defining features include a high-contrast combined with diagonal stress, along with pinched stems and horizontals. There are 18 fonts altogether over 9 weights in roman and italic, you can also avail of one variable fonts which allow you to fine tune the weight to your exact liking.

As Dreamer occupies the space with its large x-height and wide characters it’s effective for any display use where you need to communicate a friendly, fun and easy to approach feeling with a touch of charming nostalgia polished in modern days aesthetics. Dreamer is equipped with a large arsenal of OpenType features - Try Swash, Stylistic or Titling Alternates for less conventional letterforms. Keep Standard Ligatures and Contextual Alternates on to prevent certain letter combinations, such as ff and fi from colliding unintentionally. In total, Dreamer has more than 100 alternative characters.
