Calps is a condensed sans serif font. An unfussy design, the font is designed to be consistent across such letters as a, b, d, q, p, g and C, G, O, Q, creating a uniformity for the set. Each corner of the line is carved to decrease its sharpness, adding a touch of friendliness. If the standard font is not sufficiently condensed, there is a slim variation offering narrower proportions. In addition to the slim variation, the font also comes in roman and italic versions in 9 weights, offering a total of 36 variations for the font.

Phosphate Pro is an all-caps sans serif font family with an inline weight, and was created by Steve Jackaman (ITF) and Ashley Muir in 2010. The original Phosphate was published by International TypeFounders, and the family was based on the ‘Phosphor’ typeface created by Jakob Erbar for Ludwig and Mayer, circa 1922-30. Jackaman created a condensed variant, 'Phosphate Condensed Pro,' in 2017. Phosphate Pro has incredible presence, and its power shines in display format. Apple, who is notoriously selective about their software choices, included Phosphate Pro in the system fonts for Apple’s OS X 10.10 Yosemite.

Willow is an Adobe Originals typeface designed in 1990 by Joy Redick for the Adobe Wood Type series. Willow is a condensed typeface modeled on nineteenth-century wood types known as Clarendons (wood type Clarendons do not resemble the English metal types of that name). Clarendon condensed faces were originally so well-designed that words or a line of display type have an even color that is remarkable for wood types. Taken from proofs of type in the Rob Roy Kelly Collection housed at the University of Texas at Austin, Willow can be used for display work such packaging, advertising, and posters.

Roadway is based on U.S. highway lettering observed on New York street signs. Two weights of capitals would often be used on the same sign, condensed for the main name, and a half-size regular superscript for ‘road’ or ’street’. Roadway is a Small Caps font. The upper case consists of condensed capitals, the lower case consists of regular width small caps, sized at 50% and superscript. A small superscript comma and period, aligned with the lowercase, are at keystrokes < and > respectively. A small hyphen lining with the superscript lowercase is at the en dash position (Mac: option hyphen, Windows: alt-0150).

The lightest weight of Presley Slab takes inspiration from a late nineteenth-century type specimen, but what began as a decorative and delicate contrasted serif stirred Alejandro Paul’s imagination to conjure voluptuous reverse contrasted letterforms. These became the heaviest weight of Presley Slab, which nods to the lacquered hairstyles from the birth of rock ’n roll with its idiosyncratic ball terminals. Its playful allure and swagger remains visible in the weights that stand between these two extremes but as the curls loosened, many things happened in the design process including the appearance of swashes and alternates. Presley Slab’s personality has breadth; it is a fun, confident and contemporary palette of letters that will perfectly perform for any job, from editorial design to branding. Minimal, modular, modern—at first glance, Materia shows a contemporary flair, combining pure, strong geometrical form with a subtle, distinct appearance. Actually, the design was inspired by lettering from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century that still can be found in the East of France. While its formal origins date back as far as this, revived e. g. by the constructivists into the nineteen twenties and later on by Dutch information designer Wim Crouwel in the nineteen-sixties, the visual language of Materia still speaks of the »future«. Following a minimalistic concept the font is formally built on a grid. Wherever optical curves are needed for a smoother, more comfortable shape of letters than a simple rectangular block, diagonals cut off the egdes – like a diamond is cut to achieve more beauty. Thus headlines and texts set in Materia are given a certain »egdy« feeling, whereas their tonality is still kept well-balanced, keeping concentation all on information in a nonconfomist way. Materia comes in eight styles, from elegant Thin to attention-forcing Ultra. Even a regular Italic is available, following the classic type-set-principle. Two of the styles are explicitly designed for display use, Shadow and Code. Both are ready for combinations with Bold or each other respectively, the layering of Shadow and Code e. g. allows astonishing effects or highlighting within the letters. For OpenType-users Materia is a real Pro, containing accented Latin letters for over 70 languages, small caps, old style, tabular and lining figures and special condensed titling all caps for cases in which space is all that counts. How useful all of the above mentioned is may be seen in the book David Lynch – Lithos, designed by Koma Amok, published in 2010 by item éditions, Paris, and Hatje Cantz, Germany, which was typeset completely in Materia.

In a vintage photograph, promotional signage outside an old theater for the 1929 early sound film “The Doctor’s Secret” had lettering in a wide, bold Art Nouveau slab serif design. This was the model for Talking Picture JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The movie poster for the 1952 bank heist drama “Kansas City Confidential” had its title hand lettered in a condensed serif stencil design. This inspired Secret Operation JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

XAabced evolved gradually as I reworked earlier attempts to do a text face. It is quite condensed, but with fairly long ascenders and descenders. Blending it with JasperSqueeze resulted in JabcdHy, which I prefer to either parent.
