One of the type examples found within the pages of “Lettering” by Harry B. Wright (1950) is a bold hand lettered serif typeface with a unique twist – the slab serifs had rounded corners, looking very much like show card lettering of the early 1900s. This design is now available digitally as Maybrook JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Inspired by the signwriting on traditional old canal boats in the UK, this bold, block serif design has many potential uses. Due to the modular nature of this design there may be a slight lack of smoothness to the curves at very large point sizes (around 100 pt and above).

At the end of every road in Transylvania stands a dark, foreboding castle, seemingly clouded by impossibly dark shadows. Bat-like creatures scurry across its gargoyle-festooned towers, and slimy green patches of moss climb inexorably up its cold walls. Glodok is a single-weight display typeface. It is bold, heavy and fun to play around with. It’s eye catching but also blends well when in use. It is retro-inspired and strikes a nice balance between formal and playful. The name itself comes from the oldest Chinatown in Jakarta that is also considered the biggest in Indonesia, the place from where the designer took many inspirations.

Based on ten characters found on the cover of a 1960s Blue Note jazz album. The source characters were originally designed for film-based typesetting by Wayne Stettler as part of a single typeface published by Visual Graphics Corporation (VGC) under the name Neil Bold. Mobley Sans, along with its condensed and serifed counterparts, constitute a brand new typographic whole molded around the original inspirational source. In a vintage photograph, promotional signage outside an old theater for the 1929 early sound film “The Doctor’s Secret” had lettering in a wide, bold Art Nouveau slab serif design. This was the model for Talking Picture JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A playful, casual take on round nib pen lettering was spotted amongst some online scans from an old lettering book. The free-form and stylized shapes of the letters and numbers are reminiscent of old-time show cards, movie titles and signage in vogue around the early 1900s through the 1920s. Fancy Show Card JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Longacre JNL is bold. It's condensed. It has rounded ends. The design is both eye-catching and casual; perfect for titling that needs to make a point without being overwhelming. Based on a set of wood type, this design also offers an inference of child-like simplicity, as it is very similar to the type of lettering found on classroom bulleting boards.

Way back in 1996, three student letterers went into the forest looking for the mysterious fonts used to letter Spawn: Blood & Shadows. They never returned. A year later, these fonts were found. Thought Balloons. No use for them any more. You can't be taken seriously when your thoughts are floating above your head in cute, puffy clouds. Doesn't look good. When the streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood, a thought bubble just isn't noir enough, is it? It's gotta be GRIM. It's gotta be GRITTY. Let's face it... It's gotta be GRIM'N'GRITTY. In Italic and Bold Italic. Also Regular and Bold. But I've little use for them either. Talk is cheap.
