A hand lettered emulation of a Roman stencil type face on the cover of the folio for the Stenso School Set was the basis for Eutaw Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. The Stenso School Set (circa 1940-41) was comprised of three stencils – two lettering guides and a map of the [then] 48 United States. Developed and patented by Baltimore school teacher Ruth Libauer Hormats, her stencils were the first to offer a system for accurate letter spacing and ease of use. “Eutaw” (as part of the font’s name) is taken from Eutaw Place, the street where Ruth and her husband lived at the time of Stenso’s inception. To the Cherokee, the name means “Creek Indian”.

Food Truck package is a wonderful set of fonts. During my recent trip to Japan, I stumbled upon a food truck / street food festival in Nara. Designed by Les Usherwood. Digitally engineered by Steve Jackaman. Originally designed by Frederick Goudy for the original Life magazine, circa 1908. Because of delays in production, the face was never used by the magazine. However, Gimbel Brothers, the famous New York department store, opened in 1910, around the time of the release of the typeface, which was used almost exclusively for its advertising and was often known as Goudy Gimbel, but the typeface was better known by the Monotype series number Goudy 38.

Vladimir Script is a brush-style font, similar to the kind of lettering found on old hand-painted department store signs during the 1950s. The letters have a steep slant, and the uppercase letters and the numbers are rather informal. Many of the letters' strokes end in looped terminals, some with dynamic amounts of contrast. Vladimir Script is best used in larger point sizes, where its subtle details can dance across the page. The typeface looks fabulous on signs and cards.

Riccia actually started with the idea of a Rotunda a. Specifically the lower part of it. This element has a lot of character and I wanted to transfer it to a modern sans serif. The curly endings made it possible to spread that idea to the entire alphabet. Apart from those strong elements the proportions are inspired by classic grotesques. The weights are layed out in the usual way I create my families. 9 weights up to a strong Ultrabold, all with italics. Ideal for magazine and corporate usage.

Los Angeles’ distinctive “shotgun” style street signs were last produced over sixty years ago, but these durable porcelain and steel signs are still in use all over the city, by both humans and birds, who like to build their nests between the panels.
