The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. The Italian stencils that I chose as a model for this font are roughly based on classic French stencil letters. Please compare the figures (numbers) with their French counterparts. However, the Italian stencils are made with a different production technique. The design of the letters is clearly not punch-cut into the plates, maybe they are drilled, milled or etched. Details such as the serifs look bold and clumsy, and when using the stencils as they are meant, with viscous sign paint, smaller details easily fade away. So I took my freedom to design a font close to the original design but adding several typographic tweaks to let it shine, hoping to get closer to the intended design idea of these Italian stencils. The cast credits for the 1954 film "Hell's Half Acre" (Wendell Corey, Evelyn Keyes and Elsa Lanchester) provided the basis for Mystic East JNL.

Kris is a powerful typeface based on humanistic minuscule with a touch of Uncial script. An alphabet with an unusual appearance. It is based on the paradigm of classical handwriting. Kris is handwritten with a broad nib pen and ordinary black ink. The somewhat fanciful shapes are created by lifting the pen randomly left and right. This causes unpredictable frayed edges that make the typeface exciting. It bursts with character and is very versatile. Kris is written by the Dutch calligraphy artist Corrie Smetsers. Corrie threw all basic characters in a plastic bag and René Verkaart built the typeface and created all remaining characters. “Most special about this project was collaborating with Corrie. She's an expert in handwriting and has developed writing systems for the educational sector for decades”, René says.

FG Typical is inspired by typewriting. But the letters got skewed in processing making it look a bit corny, but it looks great at small sizes as well as large. the characters all have the same height except for the i, å, ä etc.

I just finished book 8 of The Expanse (by James S.A. Corey) and the name Takeshi popped up somewhere, so I decided to use it for this font family! Takeshi is a hand made set of fonts: a fat display font, a thinner complementary font and a doodle font. Enjoy!

An ad spotted in a 1964 issue of Billboard magazine with the words “STAND BACK…” introduced the first record album from then-new stand-up comedian Bill Cosby. The lettering of those two words was in a stencil sans serif design that was a perfect candidate for developing into a digital font. The end result is Advertising Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Big Display Sans JNL is an all-caps version of Ludlow’s metal type “Samson”, originally designed by Robert Hunter Middleton in 1940. This digital version is available in both regular and oblique versions.

RaseDowne is unique amoung all of our other Graffiti Fonts. This font is intended to be rotated 90 degrees clockwise so the text reads downward. This single font includes 2 alphabets with capitals that extend downwards. The RaseDowne font was created from hundreds of handwritten samples. Blue Goblet is a script developed for the pending illustrated children’s book from Portland Studios, The Blue Goblet. The font has grown to a comprehensive system, with a wide array of ornaments available. Blue Goblet is usable in a wide range of settings, and includes a full complement of OpenType features and a more playful alternate. Blue Goblet is a collaboration between Portland Studios and insigne. It was designed by Cory Godbey and digitized by Jeremy Dooley.

This heavyweight poster sans is based on the typeface Samson, designed by Robert Hunter Middleton for the Ludlow Type Foundry in 1940. The slanted uprights suggesting brushwork make this face a perfect choice for casually commanding headlines.
