I designed Conium to be a sister font to Nightshade. It was meant to have the appearance of the hemlock plant without being too derivative; it’s thin drooping stems conjure images of Hamlet’s mad Ophilia clutching sickly weeds while thinking them to be flowers. It also projects the appearance of an ice cold, wrought iron, cemetery gate. The sort that one might pass on a damp overcast day. A fitting compliment to an Edward Gorey illustration from top, right down to the frigid ground from which it sprang. Space Rocks! A Retro Sci-Fi Font Inspired by 1950s Television Serials “Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! The next episode of Space Rocks is on tonight! What’s it about? Well, it’s all to do with this family of astronauts who crash land on Mars and how they survive all sorts of alien creatures and killer storms! The science is really real too! Who needs school!!!” And so goes the story of one young fan whose imagination is captured by the latest offering in a golden-age of TV science-fiction. A brand of 1950s programming that offered a light-hearted and optimistic view of the future full of exploration, discovery and hazardous adventure! Sometimes even a cautionary tale to live on in your nightmares! With Space Rocks I want to capture this vibe with an all-caps design inspired the opening titles of these shows, fully hand-drawn with a range of discretionary ligatures that add a comic (not atomic!) touch. The package includes Regular and Outlined (all hand-drawn) versions with a complete set of alternatives to help maintain the analogue look. This font also includes unique uppercase and lowercase characters, along with numerals, punctuation, language support, underlines and symbols. An ad found within the pages of the Sept. 7, 1939 issue of Motion Picture Daily for "The Man They Could Not Hang" had the film's title hand lettered in a slightly stylized bold sans serif design. This is now available as Criminal Trial JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Quercus is characterised by open, yet a little bit condensed drawing with sufficient spacing so that the neighbouring letters never touch. It has eight interpolated weights with respective italics. Their fine gradation allows to find an exact valeur for any kind of design, especially on the web. Quercus serif styles took inspiration from classicistic typefaces with vertical shadows, ball terminals and thin serifs. The italics have the same width proportion as upright styles. This “modern” attitude is applied to both families and calls for use on the same page, e g in dictionaries and cultural programmes. Serif styles marked by “10” are dedicated to textual point sizes and long reading. The sans-serif principle is rather minimalistic, with subtle shadows and thinned joints between curved shapes and stems. Quercus family comprises of the usual functionality such as Small Caps, Cyrillics, diacritics, ligatures, scientific and aesthetic variants, swashes, and other bells & whistles. It excels in informational and magazine design, corporate identity and branding, but it’s very well suited for book covers, catalogues and posters as well. When choosing a name for this typeface I've been staring out from my studio window, thinking helplessly without any idea in sight. Suddenly I realised that all I can see is a spectacular alley of oaks (Quercus in Latin) surrounding my house. These oaks were planted by the builders of local ponds under the leadership of Jakub Krčín in the fifteenth century.
