We have grown a new flower in our Garden, but this time, in a more emotional way, capturing its vibrations and using them to create a fresh handmade typeface: ‘Bach’, a display type system inspired by the new lifestyle trends that look to go back to basics and increase the value of old natural healing methods. Bach comes in two styles: a 6-weight Serif font in regular and italic versions, and a 2-weight Script in regular and bold versions. Ornaments are also included! Bach Script is based on the calligraphic catchwords set (handcrafted with brush pen) and the Serif version of the Garden typeface. Grantig is a bold serif display typeface. Inspired by the opening titles of old western movies, the genre of western slab serifs has been translated into a modern context and adapted to today's needs. As a result, it breaks free from the chains of its genre and opens up to many themes. Grantig is the german word for grumpy. With its massive serifs and strictly rounded curves, it comes particularly close in character to the grumpy Western heroes of days gone by, always in the presence of his two leaning companions, Slant and Backslant. With Grantig, it is particularly easy to create eye-catching and type-accentuated headlines. Its expressive nature makes it particularly suitable for editorial, packaging and advertising. I have just returned from a trip to Malaysia, Java and Bali with my family: my wife had some family business there, so we turned it into a holiday. The last time I visited these places was 26 years ago and I knew things would have changed, but I wasn’t prepared for the ugly truth. Malaysia’s interior has been converted into one big oil palm plantation, Java is choked in plastic and Bali is one endless string of concrete hotels, restaurants and cheap tattoo parlours. Plastic Fantastic is not an ode to the many uses of plastic. It is a wake up call: we really need to stop using disposable plastic! You can start by implementing the Plastic Fantastic font family in your durable water bottle designs, the compostable bag holding your organic potato crisps or that big ole sign advertising your local food truck event. Or whatever it is you want to create. ;-)

Mandelia was created by Alex Kaczun, an American type designer, in 2010. The typeface was named in honor of Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa, for his “shining example of the incredible strength of the human spirit to persevere in the face of adversity for the pursuit of freedom”. Mandelia is a strong, bold and wide-bodied serif typeface design, reminiscent of the great African landscape with its diverse animal life. It’s easy to see the influence of the 'Rhino' sharp serifs and ‘Elephant’ size stems and proportions. The font commands attention and respect. Great for headlines that pack a punch, logos, posters, and signage. And because it was well designed, it can even be used in body copy at various point sizes. Mandelia is available in Opentype format for both Mac and PC, and comes complete with true drawn small caps, old style figures and Unicode Latin 1252 and Central European 1250 character sets. It has everything you need to get the job done.

This all started with a love for Jenson. I know there're hundreds of variations on that theme. But, that is where I began, several years ago. How far it came, as usual as I wandered through the vagaries of font design, is not unusual. If you've read any of my font design books, you know my design processes are quite loose and spontaneous. I wanted the general feel of a favorite old font, but softer, easier, and more comfortable. I built these on the same vertical metrics as my Librum Publishing Group. However, this family is not part of that group. I used the metrics because that shows my current taste in fonts. This family does work with the Librum group—but to be honest, I haven't experimented enough to come up with a good companion. I suspect I'll need to make another companion family. I may need make a non-modulated bold version also. But, that remains to be seen. I'm pleased with this.

Full Slab is the younger brother of original Full Sans, FullNeue and Full Tools. Ideally suited for advertising and packaging, editorial and publishing, logo, branding and creative industries, poster and billboards, small text, wayfinding and signage as well as web and screen design. Full Slab provides advanced typographical support for Latin-based languages. An extended character set, supporting Central, Western and Eastern European languages, rounds up the family. Didonesque Script has the flair of a script typeface, yet retains the rigid structure and incline of its cousins in the Didonesque family. This makes for an interesting approach – the flamboyancy of this script is restrained which resonates a distinctly reserved and formal tone. This typeface is perfect for formal occasions, with its main intent for use in short runs of text, headlines, branding and logo applications. Open Type features are utilized to good effect – positional forms, contextual alternates, ligatures, stylistic alternates, and old style figures all add value to Didonesque Script. There are four weights, from delicate to voluptuous (Regular, Medium, Bold, and Black), which are replicated in “Display” versions – these are designed for use at larger point sizes. Senohraby is an uppercase display typeface inspired by the old sign at Senohraby train station that is now slowly chipping away. Senohraby is available in three interconnected styles that freely various ages of the sign. “Paint” is a more or less preserved font written with a flat brush and featuring slight scratches and errors. The other styles, “Dirt” and “Trash”, follow up on this style and are increasingly marked by age, damage and erosion... In each style one can use simple alternation with lowercase letters, context-based alternation to eliminate repetition of adjacent characters, and a broad range of language support. As a result, each letter offers six variations that can be combined. These can be used as another alternation within a single word or as different bold weights. As a bonus, a fourth, additional style named “Crap” is freely available and as the name implies, it contains a wide array of various impurities.

Remember when a coyote was a light-boned rangy member of the canine family and not the name (spelled C-A-O-T-I) of your neighbor's four year old daughter? When a cricket was a leaping, chirping insect and not the name (spelled K-R-I-Q-U-I-T-T-E) of your purple-haired, pierced-tongued waitress? When Madison and Austin were cities, when brie was a variety of cheese, when radon and alar were hazardous substances and NOT FIRST NAMES? Burghal Design remembers the good old days, when people were not named Whisper, Zandren, Skylar or Dakota but were called Eleanor, Arthur, Edward and Irene. In the spirit of these classic monikers, we give you Mildred, a script font family for proud and simple folk: the down to earth Mildred Plain, hearty Mildred Stout, the barely-there Mildred Scrawn,and the barfly Mildred Cocktail. There's also the slightly more formal (but still all-purpose) Mildred Fancy, bolder Mildred Strong, and the wisp of Mildred Mild. Rounding out the family is Mildred Ornaments, a collection of symbols that can be used for snowflakes, for bullets, or just for fun. Mildred: just an old-fashioned, hard working font.

Probably as a reaction to the pragmatism of modernist design, the seventies saw an explosion of buoyant, vivacious typography. Psychedelia fueled a return to the melting, lush shapes of Art Nouveau while Pop culture embraced the usage of funky, joyful lettering for advertising, product design and tv titling. New low-cost technologies like photo-lettering and rub-on transfer required new fonts to be expressive rather than legible, pushing designers to produce, bubbly, high-spirited masterpieces, where geometric excess and calligraphic inventions melted joyfully. Freitag is Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini's homage to this era and its typography. His starting point was the design of a heavy sans serif with humanist condensed proportions, flared stems and reverse contrast, that generated both the main family, and a variant display subfamily. The main typeface family slowly builds the tension and design exuberance along the weight axis - a bit like our desire for the weekend increases during the week. In Light and Medium weights the font shows a more controlled, medium-contrast design, tightly spaced for maximum display effect. The Book weight follows the same design but uses a more relaxed letter spacing to allow usage in smaller sizes and short body copy. As weight increases in the Bold weight the style becomes more expressive, with a visible reverse contrast building up and culminating in the Heavy weight with his clearly visible "bell bottoms" feel. In the display sub-family the design is pushed further by introducing variant letterforms that have a stronger connection to calligraphy and lettering. Also, the weight range becomes a optical one, with weights marked as Medium, Large, XLarge, as bringing the contrast and the boldness to the extreme creates smaller counterspaces that require bigger usage sizes. Another important addition of the display sub-family is the connected italics that sport swash capitals and cursive letterforms, developed with logo design and ultra-expressive editorial design in mind. To balance the extreme contrast in the XL weight, contrast of punctuation is reduced, creating a rich, highly-dynamic texture wherever diacritics and marks are used in the text. The full family includes 16 styles + 4 variable fonts, allowing full control of the design over its tree-hugging design space. All 20 fonts share an extended latin charset with open type features including case sensitive forms, single and double story variants and alternate glyphs. According to its creator, "Freitag is the typeface that sounds like an imaginary Woodstock where on the stage with Jimi Hendrix with Novarese, Motter, Excoffon and Benguiat playing onstage with Jimi Hendrix". Jeepers creepers!

A modern classic in its own right, Palatino is popular among professional graphic designers and amateurs alike, working well for both text and display typography. Hermann Zapf and Akira Kobayashi redeveloped Palatino for the 21st Century, creating Palatino Nova. Released by Linotype in 2005, the Palatino Nova family is part of Linotype's Platinum Collection.
