In the late 60’s, one of the best art publications in the country was Motive magazine, published (amazingly) by the United Methodist Church. Filled to the brim with poetry, essays, line drawing and woodcuts, it also featured some cutting-edge typography. Boxy/Code is based upon my memories of woodcut typography from that great magazine. Since Boxy/Code ’s lowercase consists of the uppercase’s negative spaces, it’s easy to combine the two with Layer Styles in Photoshop in order to achieve the effect I used in one poster above. It also works great if you use a well-known text as a background. This new version is totally redrawn and features all the Latin-accented letters. Uppercase consists of black capitals in boxes; lowercase features the negative spaces of those boxed capitals. Uppercase and lowercase line up exactly for 2-color effects.

Hazelton is a neo-humanist typeface inspired by the explorations and development of early British sans-serif typography. Six weight have been developed for Hazelton. The lighter weights are loosely inspired by Edward Johnston’s Underground typeface. The heavier weights glean inspiration from Stephenson Blake’s Granby. Sharp, pointed terminals that are indicative of British typography have been omitted in favour of a more modern sensibility. Subtle humanist characteristics become more exaggerated as the typeface increases in weight, making the lighter weights practical for text purposes and the heavier weights ideal for display use. A unique set of numerals have been developed to infuse them with a humanist quality that is often lacking when typesetting technical data. Gramatika is a typeface family of sans serif from the neo-Grotesque styles. There are four different weights available, ranging from light to bold. Each weight is equipped with an italic style that is a bit like an oblique style and lifted by some unique characters, with an alternative to the single story ‘a’ for example. Inspired by the famous grotesk typefaces such as Akzidenz Grotesk and Bauersche Giesserei’s Venus Grotesk, Gramatika shapes and styles are consistently adjusted for each character to meet the classic contemporary style, treated with some ciruclar-based characters in descender g, y. »AlphaOne« is my newest addition to the experimental Alpha-font-collection. I just had to do this one! It is based on Paul Renners fonts, but has got nothing to do with them, I just took the widths and some basic forms. No – or hardly no – optical corrections were made to the glyphs. I wanted the pure geometric forms to come to life. This was a lot of fun to design, I especially like the »Q« with the negative tail. I did make four weights, but nothing is normal with this font, so weight doesn’t really mean anything. Have fun!

KAPITAL is an elegant, geometric uppercase sans. It is available in standard and stencil style across four weights – light | regular | medium | demi – covering 346 glyphs. It is based on the capital character set from a previous release – Basik. Continuing the clean, geometric aesthetics, KAPITAL was refined further to create a more minimal style. This enabled the characters to discreetly perform their role – to simply convey the message of the writer without distraction. To achieve this, special attention was applied to the form consistency of the glyphs across the weights and negative space throughout. In many typefaces as the weight is increased the form and style can deviate significantly from the original design. With regards to negative space – although inevitable – wherever possible key letterforms were adjusted to alleviate this.

Parca is a straightforward new take on the classic tradition of Grotesk sans, setting a new standard in the category. The letterforms are crafted with a gentle and careful drawing process that features small details like subtle tappering on the stems and optical corrections avoiding excessive geometry artefacts. Parca is indicated for design projects and branding when you are in the need of a neutral yet warm feeling allowing the content to be the focus and letting the forms to support it. A careful kerning and spacing features have been develop for the font, allowing it to be used either for small text or huge headlines. Parca is presented in a robust family of five weights plus matching italics and it supports most of the latin-based European languages.

The name Corpid derives from “Corporate Identity” — which is what this family of low-contrast sans-serifs was made for. Corpid was originally commissioned by Studio Dumbar in the Netherlands as a corporate typeface for the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fishing. The font was designed to replace the existing standard typeface (a well-known business-like sans-serif) to provide the organization with a unique and strong identity. Although it was designed to fit strict technical requirements, Corpid has a personality all of its own. This was in part a result of what Luc(as) calls “creating tension” between the inner and outer curves of each character. “I tend to put a little more diagonal contrast into fonts than is the case in most neutral sans serif fonts. This brings a certain humanistic touch to the typeface. Much more subtle here than in Thesis – but although it is almost invisible, it is still palpable.” Corpid was gradually expanded into a five-weight, three-width family. Continuo is a fascinating, all-uppercase display typeface wherein the contour of each letterform is described with a single, continuous line. The challenges presented by that simple idea are similar to constructing letterforms with neon tubing. For example, when the strokes of a letterform need to be heavier than the width of the neon tube, two tubes are employed to create the outer contours, effectively leaving an unfilled void inside the stroke. Also, since neon tubes cannot be broken apart as they trace the contours, they must follow a path that, for reasons of economy and to avoid optical massing (or bright spots in neon), the tubes are not crossed. So too, the construction of Continuo follows. The newly updated Continuo now has alternate forms of letters A-Z available in the lowercase a-z and by extension those alternates are also present in the lowercase diacritics. The new Latin Plus glyph repertoire of Continuo contains almost 900 glyphs, supporting 224 languages, including Vietnamese and multiple African languages.
