Malbeck is a script which is both as elegant as it is unique. Very playful typographic treatments can be produced using the large selection of alternate characters. This 2007 version of Malbeck is now available in OpenType format to expand possibilities of use with lots of alternates when used with OpenType-aware applications such as InDesign. A set of plastic pin-back letters served as the model for Monthly Meeting JNL. Pin-back letters were primarily used on cork bulletin boards for changeable notices and announcements.

Most of the lettering on a piece of sheet music for a song from the 1921 George M. Cohan musical comedy entitled “The O’Brien Girl” was hand lettered in a playful, casual Art Nouveau design with rounded ends. The characters on that page took on a look reminiscent of cartoon or comic strip wording, and the result is a digital typeface named Cartoon Nouveau JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The Scriptorium got its start in the early days of personal computers with a few font designs for the Commodore 64, and the very first font which we did back then in the early 1980s was a gothic calligraphy font. That style of fonts - the medieval, gothic and black letter genre - has always been the backbone of our collection, but with recent releases we've stayed away from them to introduce a bit more variety. Well, with our new Zauberer font the antique, medieval and gothic look is back with a vengeance. Zauberer isn't a true medieval calligraphy style. It's based on early printed type from Germany which combines calligraphic elements with decorative embellishments from the woodcut printing era. The result is decorative and antique looking and rather appealing. The name comes from the German word for a magician or illusionist.

Art Deco and Western styles fuse into one design in Bootspur JNL. A rounded A,M,N and W along with the Art Deco curvature found in the K,R,X and Y set Bootspur JNL apart from many of the other condensed Western fonts currently available.

Melusine is based on an ornate style of gothic calligraphy used primarily in decorative signs and advertising in Germany around the turn of the century. It has many of the characteristics of a true medieval gothic hand, but is a more elaborate, extreme variaton on the style.

Longbow BB is an unconventional gothic/blackletter typeface with a hefty compliment of European characters. The Opentype version has autoligatures to make any two adjacent, duplicate letters or numbers look slightly different for a more hand-lettered look.

Enamela (rhymes with Pamela) is a monoline square sans that is available in normal width and condensed versions. Although rooted in the early years of sans serif type, the Enamela fonts have a timeless quality that is practical and unpretentious. The letterforms derive from vitreous enamel signage dating from the Victorian era and widely used in Britain for street nameplates, Post Office signs, the plates on James Ludlow wall postboxes, railway signs and direction signs, as well as for circular Automobile Association wayfinding plaques throughout the first half of the twentieth century. The quirky terminals, stemming from the compression of geometric type, invite comparison with the Charles Wright fonts used for UK vehicle registration plates. Enamela and Enamela Condensed are both available in three weights – regular, medium and bold – and as italics (optically corrected obliques). A commonly used alternative M with a vertex that touches the baseline is provided at the Alt-M (µ) keystroke on a Mac, or Alt-0181 on Windows. A commonly used G with a plain vertical throat, no crosspiece, is assigned Unicode FF27 (full width capital G).

Rational TW is the typewriter addition to the Rational family. It is a monospaced font building on the same principles as its proportional, neogrotesque brother, such as maximum legibility and flexibility while combining Swiss and American gothic elements with a modern aesthetic. 64-SRC is a condensed monospace font inspired by 1960s IBM Selectric type seen on HAL’s telemetric displays in 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is characterized by unique "double-space" alternates for the widest characters such as “w” and “m”. These alternates maximize legibility, improve the rhythm of readability and keep typographic color even. As a result 64-SRC is as well suited for extensive copy as it is display type.
