In his book of 100 Wood Type Alphabets, Rob Roy Kelly called this face "Teutonic". Call me some kind of weird, but I find designing fonts about the most fun you can have out of bed. Legible-scmedgible, sometimes you just have follow the font muse regardless of where she takes you. She threw me a circle, a triangle, a rounded stroke and a rounded-cornered square; “Make glyphs,” she sang. Okay! Is it legible? Yes. Is it readable? Kinda. For the right project, though, that’s enough!

Umerica first made its appearance in 2007 as a series of characters in a pdf I posted to Typophile. It has taken a lot of time, and determination, for me to finally decide to complete it. I had the basic font completed in 2008, but put it aside as the creation of the italics it deserved were beyond me. That was then. Now the italic version has finally been added twelve years later.

I, uh, don't know quite what to say. I'd toiled so long over Pumpkinseed back in '96 that I guess I needed a good, wild ride to shake out the head cramps, or something. Whatever grabbed me, it forced me to sit down and design a typeface real fast directly in Fontographer (had never done that before). Took less than two hours to finish the regular character set. No way to explain it, but the exercise actually paid off -- I think. And now that there was Speed Bump, there simply had to be a companion dingbat set. (Beats the heck out of me.)
