The Thief Bird is an informal grotesque font. Although informal and grotesque may seem to be two quite different ideas, we have to dig into the origin of this typeface in order to understand the matter. The concept behind The Thief Bird was inspired by the adaptation that the vintage sign painters made when they took the grotesque style characters they saw in newspapers and magazines and reproduced them using a brush, aiming to make the prices of the products displayed on wooden boards stand out, as opposed to highlighting large headlines (such as the idea behind fonts like Franklin Gothic). The Thief Bird takes the language from sign painters and turns it into a font --this time around not aiming to set prices but to bring children stories to life. Thus, some legibility features from grotesque fonts were mixed with the brush calligraphy to add grace and zest to a font intended for children. The Thief Bird is a playful display font, with cheerful ligatures and alternate characters. It is really attractive for setting short paragraphs that tell stories for little people. ITC Astro is the typeface that proves you can get your work done while watching cartoons. “It all started as a series of doodles while I was watching The Jetsons,” recalls Sasa Petricic. “The show's impossibly simplistic vision of the twenty-first century cried out for a font that fit into that world -- a world where everyday objects can carry far more fun and personality than they should.” ITC Astro is the first commercial typeface design from Petricic, whose “day job” is working as a reporter for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Petricic's work as a correspondent and video journalist have taken him to six continents, covering everything from famine and genocide in Africa to the war in Iraq. I loved this monster font the second I saw it - it reminded me of Franquins Idées Noires... Reworking it and adding the missing glyphs and diacritics was quite time-consuming - but a lot of fun! Lots of details. The Lupineless variant is Lupine with eyes, decorations and stray hairs removed - which leaves just a very usable fuzzy font for your monster-related headline. Coco Sharp is the newest evolution of the Coco typographic project, developed since 2013 by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini for the foundry Zetafonts, with the help of Francesco Canovaro and Andrea Tartarelli. Update November 2022: ULGA Grid now features an oblique variant. It’s also been expanded into a family of different but related designs with the addition of ULGA Grid Solid and ULGA Grid Rounded typeface families. All variants and new designs are monospaced, sharing the same width as the original ULGA Grid font and matching character sets. The character set has also been enlarged and now supports Western Europe, Vietnamese, Central/Eastern Europe, Baltic, Turkish and Romanian. ULGA Grid is a modular, monospaced typeface reminiscent of the old Letraset LCD & Quartz typefaces from the 1970/80s with lots of alternative characters and ornaments to bring a fresh twist to the genre. The idea’s seed germinated while I was going through a phase of binge watching my favourite 1980/90s sci-fi movies (classics such as Terminator, Total Recall and RoboCop). However, perception and reality don’t always align. Thirty years later, when compared to today’s technology, some visual elements look kind of outdated, almost Retro Futuristic. The initial design process started out in Adobe Illustrator when I constructed letters from a few geometric shapes within a square block. Just playing around with different shapes was so engrossing that it wasn’t long before there were enough characters for a basic typeface. The project grew again as I experimented with designs within the shapes and set paragraphs of text in patterns, resulting in over a hundred alternative characters and ornaments, some of which double up as border designs. This typeface may be square but it’s anything but boring. What it lacks in legibility ULGA Grid makes up for in style and the end result is a surprisingly versatile typeface that you'll have fun using for a wide range of display purposes including CD covers, posters, packaging, advertising, brochures and film titles. Ironically, the fixed grid structure frees the characters to create patterns of text not possible with variable widths.

The Gill Sans® Nova typeface, by Monotype Studio designer George Ryan, expands the much-loved Gill Sans family from 18 to 43 fonts and features a coordinated range of roman and condensed designs. Several new display fonts are available, including a suite of six inline weights, shadowed outline fonts that were never digitized and Gill Sans Nova Deco that was previously withdrawn from the Monotype library. Futura is the fully developed prototype of the twentieth century Geometric Sanserif. The form is ancient, Greek capitals being inscribed by the Cretans twenty-five hundred years ago at the time of Pythagoras in the Gortyn Code, by the Imperial Romans, notably in the tomb of the Scipios, by classical revival architects in eighteenth century London, which formed the basis for Caslon’s first sanserif typeface in 1817. Some aspects of the Geometric sanserif survived in the flood of Gothics that followed, particularly in the work of Vincent Figgins. In 1927, stimulated by the Bauhaus experiments in geometric form and the Ludwig & Mayer typeface Erbar, Paul Renner sketched a set of Bauhaus forms; working from these, the professional letter design office at Bauer reinvented the sanserif based on strokes of even weight, perfect circles and isosceles triangles and brought the Universal Alphabet and Erbar to their definitive typographic form. Futura became the most popular sanserif of the middle years of the twentieth century. Ironically, given its generic past, Futura is the only typeface to have been granted registration under copyright as an original work of art, and, further irony, given the key part played by the Bauer letter design office, the full copyright belongs to Renner and his heirs. This decision in a Frankfurt court implies that a further small group of older typefaces may also be covered by copyright in Germany, particularly those designed for Stempel by Hermann Zapf. This situation appears to be limited to this small group of faces in this one country, although protection of designers’ rights in newer typefaces is now possible in France and Germany through legislation deriving from the 1973 Vienna Treaty for the protection of typefaces. Mergenthaler’s Spartan is a close copy of Futura; Ludlow’s Tempo is less close. Functional yet friendly, logical yet not overintellectual, German yet anti-Nazi... with hindsight the choice of Futura as Volkswagen’s ad font since the 1960s looks inevitable.

In July 2014, using my light pen, I completed the work in designing the font - Nizar, which was named in honor of the great poet Nizar Qabbani who inspired millions through poetry and prose. The font depends mainly on the characteristics of the traditional Ruq'ah handwriting, but the spirit of the letters tend to embrace the distinguished style that we knew of the poet in his hand-written poetry books. Due to the fact that I could not find all the alphabets in the great poet's handwriting, I adopted the method of measurement and prediction for structure of the missing letters, Which resulted in a new style of the Ruq'ah Typeface; a closer look at the font highlights the common characteristics of all the usual Ruq'ah writings, which are the height of the character "Alef" and spaces and formation on the line, the contextual replacement and convergence of when a letter meets another, closed and open letters, letters coming down from the baseline, and the forms of dots. That been said, hidden touches in the details of Nizar Typeface can be observed, the characters are all dependent on one pen stroke thickness, and are attracted to the baseline as much as possible when vertically and horizontally formed, and the distance between words and lines grows leading to creating both an aesthetic and typographical touch distinguishing this font from the conventional Ruq'ah – which can be found in some of my previous Ruq'ah projects. It is important to mention that after the completion of the Arabic characters and punctuation, I began drawing the Latin alphabets, punctuation and necessary symbols. I cannot fail to also note that the Arabic characters include the Persian, and the Urdu characters. This Typeface is fit to be used in lengthy texts, especially in literary works, artistic print, and diverse visual display, giving the design striking features, modernity and distinction. Barbou was originally cut in 1925 by Monotype as a counterpart to Fournier, siblings that were different in design but both based on the work of Pierre-Simon Fournier. Whether by choice, accident or oversight, Fournier was preserved digitally, and Barbou was lost to history. Barbou was notably used by Stanley Morrison, in particular as the face of The Fleuron. I fell in love with Barbou when I saw it, and knew that I wanted to bring it to a new generation of designers and readers. This is a revival of Barbou, a faithful recutting with new weights, characters and many of the best features that modern font technology brings. Particular attention was paid to the original Monotype Barbou 178 specimen sheet. Originally only available in a single weight, Barbou has been recut with a variable weight, providing a large degree of flexibility between Regular and Bold. Barbou excels as a comfortable reading face for books, and the variable weight allows you to fine tune the darkness and texture of the page in a way never before possible. Barbou has a distinctive softness, and this revival of Barbou preserves much of the effect the medium of metal type had on the letterforms. This results in a subtly rounded yet defined type, elegant not worn, with the utmost attention and respect to the smallest of details. Barbou was originally cut with disparate x-heights for roman and italic, and this revival of Barbou features both the original italic, as well as a new italic redesigned at the same height as the roman. In Fournier’s time, roman and italic would not be mixed on the same line, but the type must change to meet the needs of a new generation. Barbou also features unique ligatures and alternates, old style numbers, small caps and a full Greek alphabet. Barbou is perfect for books and anywhere a comfortable reading face is required, and excels in flexibility.

Roc is a sans serif grotesk inspired by American wood types from the end of the 19th century. With nine weights in five widths, this family contains 45 fonts in total. The character set supports Western and Central European languages, as well as Turkish. Roc Grotesk comes in a range of five widths: Compressed, Condensed, Normal, Wide and ExtraWide, in order to cover a wide scope of applications. Although the styles at both ends of each range are made in their most pronounced form in terms of width and weight, they are not taken to such extremes as to become absurd, and are quite usable in display settings. The Normal width keeps all its nine styles in proportionally similar widths. The Compressed width, however, is deliberately made to be disproportionate, so that every style takes the least possible horizontal space. That is why the contrast between Compressed Thin and Compressed Heavy style is substantial. As the weights progress from Thin to Heavy, the stroke contrast becomes more prominent. It is intentionally exaggerated in heavier weights, which is particularly apparent in the uppercase E and R of the Black and Heavy style. Roc has a large x-height and relatively short descenders and ascenders. No uppercase letter descends below the baseline, so the lines of an all-caps text can be packed tightly on a poster or a headline. The Regular style is somewhat generously spaced, as it is most likely to be used for setting longer passages of text. Its Bold counterpart is spaced in such a way that the width of the text column will be similar to the text set in Regular. Tabular figures in these two styles have exact matching widths, so for example, you could emphasize one row of numbers in a data column without visually disrupting the vertical order of the table. The lowercase g and r have alternatives to accommodate what most designers expect from a typical Grotesk typeface. The single-story g and the cut-off r are accessible via the OpenType feature.

Plakato, a stencil love affair Plakato is a family of display fonts, consisting of various eye-catching styles, each of them very bold. Plakato has also been redrawn on a C64, and with all its accompanying limitations been ported back and turned into a font: Plakato Game. Also this font comes with its own Dingbat font, full of emoji’s and icons for oldskool pleasure. Last but not least there is Plakato Build, constructed out of blocks. Kangaroo FS Joey was the offspring of a project with Rudd Studio to develop a logotype for an online streaming TV service, in 2008. While under wraps, the secret project was code-named Kangaroo. The logotype led to a second project, to design a corporate typeface for the service. It was the first big project Fernando Mello had worked on with Jason Smith. “Like any designer who just joined a team, I was very excited about it, drawing and sketching lots of ideas. I remember Jason and I experimenting with lots of possibilities, for both the logo and the typeface.” Online As the font for a Spotify-style, internet-based service, FS Joey needed to be highly legible on-screen, including at very small sizes. There had to be a range of weights, and they’d have to work well in print, too. It was also important that it felt corporate, not too quirky, while still having a strong character of its own. Quirkiest “We designed three weights specifically for use on the Web,” says Jason Smith. “There was the usual fight between me and my team. I wanted at least one identifiable letter that was a quirk. As always I went straight for the lowercase ‘g’, and it was drawn numerous times with lots of variation. I got the quirkiest one accepted by the client.” But, later in 2009, the Competition Commission blocked Project Kangaroo, and Fontsmith were left with a couple of weights of an as yet unused font. From Kangaroo, Joey was born. A favourite “Straight away, people started to notice the typeface,” says Jason. “I can take the credit for pushing the art direction and standing up for the quirks. But it was Fernando who was the key to pulling it all together and adding his own distinct flavour. Now it’s one of my favourite designs in our library.” Fresh and friendly, geometric and energetic, Joey is available in five weights, all with italics, all finely-tuned for both screen and print.
