English designer David Quay created the Agincourt font in 1983. Momotarō is a Japanese legend about a boy who came to earth inside a giant peach. He was found by a childless woman and grew up to be a hero. I'm in a Japanese mood - mainly because lately I have been working with brushes and ink a lot. Momotaro font is a very detailed brush font. It doesn't come with a hero inside a giant peach, but it does give your design work that extra oomph, ahh and wow.

CS are the initials of Carsten Strinkau, a young German graphic and type designer who studied in Hamburg. CS Takashi is a hommage to the Japanese Manga artist Katsuhiro Otomo and his character/figure Takashi from the Akira-Manga. Takashi appears like Japanese kanji but looking more closely, you will read the Latin alphabet.

Bitumen is a sticky, black, and highly viscous liquid form of petroleum. When I created this font, it reminded me a bit of asphalt, hence the name. Bitumen is a handmade font based on Schmallfette Grotesk by Walter Haettenschweiler and Haettenschweiler font. The font was made with a Japanese brush pen, hence the bold lines. Bitumen comes in two styles: the regular, fat display font and a lighter version - both with italics.

Kodama are spirits in Japanese folklore that inhabit trees. The term is also used for trees in which a kodama houses. Kodama Forest is a rough, spikey and inky font, in the style of the great Ralph Steadman. Kodama Forest comes with a bunch of alternates, some interesting ligatures and a lot of splatter. And, of course, all the diacritics you can throw a tree spirit at.

Brouillard means ‘fog’ in French. I like the ‘oui’ letter combination and I was looking for a name for this font that contained those letters. I found Brouillard and presto: a new font was born! Brouillard font was handmade with a Japanese pen. It is an elegant, curvy and quite stylish font with a bit of a roughness to it - just enough to catch your attention. All three styles come with a load of diacritics.

Sans-Skript is a display typeface that is inspired by Javanese Script (or Sanskerta in Bahasa Indonesia). Javanese script is one of Indonesia’s many traditional scripts that were commonly used by Javanese people from mid-15th CE to mid-20th CE. Though not commonly used anymore, it is still taught and used in cities across East and Central Java. Sans-Skript translates the high-contrast, modular and organic features of the Javanese Script into the Latin alphabet. (Hence the not-script naming) The typeface is aimed to be used for large format prints, above 100 pt, and can be used alongside Javanese script. Typefaces that pair nicely mimic features of Javanese script, and Hatton by Pangram Pangram Foundry is an example.

Tazugane Gothic is a Japanese typeface family developed by the Monotype Studio. The project began as a companion Japanese typeface for the famous Neue Frutiger. OldHaroldRee is a modification of PhederFrack, a calligraphic fraktur face. It keeps the lower case letters and inserts a completely different set of upper-case letters, which is in the “Old English” rather than the “Old German” or fraktur style. It comes in two weights, a bit unusual for an Old-English style typeface.

Yoriko is a Latin display type from Frank Lüdicke. Its design was heavily influenced by Japanese brush stroke glyphs.

I really like the Japanese language, as it has words that describe a whole world of meaning. Like Shoganai. It literally means: ‘It cannot be helped’. That’s life, get used to it. Shoganai sums up a lot of the Japanese culture and way of thinking: if things cannot be helped, then accept it and move on. Shoganai is a set of Brush fonts: a thinner, script font and a heavy display font. Use if for book covers, product packaging and more. If you can’t use it, then, well, Shoganai.

Akebono means dawn in Japanese. It expresses the pleasure of imbalance. Stems and strokes are mixed--straight and round with slender terminals and arches. Akebono is available in three styles; Regular, Alternate, Italic. Akebono Alternate resembles the Regular but features some of the hooked tails found on the Italic.
