Along Sans Rasoe is a pretty unique font family. It only tried to connect with lines, and it didn't use curves at all. And the equalization of stems was arranged irregularly. Vintage Stencil Art JNL collects another twenty-six charming designs, all re-drawn from antique and vintage stencil sources. These images make for the perfect embellishment to typographic projects which utilize stencil type, or the designs can be applied as decorative thematic backgrounds (such as a flower show, nature walks and so forth). An ebay purchase of a vintage Speedball lettering pen set yielded an extra bonus… numerous alphabets on paper rendered in both pen and ink and via pencil sketches. One such design in rough pencil layout is a classic serif typeface often found on many passenger and freight trains, trolley cars and busses. This “Railroad Roman” was scanned from the original sketches and then re-drawn digitally, all along retaining the charm and attractiveness often found in hand lettering. The end result is Streetcar JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

At first glance, Handbills and Posters JNL bears a strong resemblance to Classroom JNL. True, they both share the visual qualities that are based on Franklin Bold Condensed, but this is where the similarity ends. Handbills and Posters JNL is a refined re-draw of the classic design, based largely on vintage typographic examples. There are also some character variances. Classroom JNL is a rougher alphabet with varying curves and lines, and resembles such letters traced and cut out of construction paper for a bulletin board display at school.

An ad in the Oct. 27, 1919 issue of the trade magazine “The Moving Picture World” promoted “Princess Virtue” from Bluebird Pictures starring Mae Murray – The Adorable [as noted by the movie studio in the ad]. The Art Nouveau hand lettering emulated the style usually drawn with a round nib pen, but was given a specialized treatment for the ad. It was re-drawn in a more traditional ‘pen nib’ look for digital revival. The end result is Silent Movies JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Diocletian fortiter in re, suaviter in modo Diocletian typeface captures the essence and glory of the Diocletian’s palace, one of the most imposing heritages of the late Roman empire. It is designed to bring the confidence and fortune to contemporary communication in a heroic and gentle manner. Diocletian typeface is based on the Uncial script, made up of wide, rounded letters. It is desirable for cafes, restaurants, shops, hotels and apartments. The typeface’s x-height is around 76% of its capitals. The font is enriched with ligatures and special characters.

Sometimes type designs are set aside as one project takes priority over another and occasionally it becomes overlooked. One such example is a set of extra bold, sans serif stencil characters drawn out in 2017. Regrettably, as much time has passed, no backstory can be applied to this typeface. It was checked against existing releases in the Jeff Levine Fonts library and didn’t seem to have been re-worked for any subsequent release. With this in mind, Baggage Claim JNL makes its belated appearance and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Kilometro Display is a Font Family inspired by the chrome car emblems of the auto industry. In the early 1950s Car manufacturers started using this sort of joint-lettering (script) to write their brand or model on their cars. The trend quickly made it’s way to other industries like electric appliances and it lasted for a good 30 plus years. Today only a handful of brands still uses this font style for their products. This geometric script re-lives a bold past all the way through 5 styles to a thin future.

It seems only fitting that Pleasant Valley Sundae JNL, a typeface re-drawn from hand lettering on a piece of vintage sheet music, should take its name as a pun on another song's title from a different era. "Pleasant Valley Sunday" was a 1967 hit for the Monkees and was written by the legendary songwriting team of Carole King and the late Gerry Goffin; inspired in turn by a street they'd lived on named Pleasant Valley Way, in West Orange, New Jersey. The record made it to #3 on the pop charts.

A rubber stamp printing set from the 1930s (or possibly earlier) was the model for Winery JNL. Containing a pleasant serif font, it also provided a few little touches unusual for such toy sets of the time. The horizontal crossbar of the H has a diamond embellishment, as does the horizontal stroke of the number 3. Additionally, the lower right tail of the G curves away from the letter and the Q has a spiral tail. Re-drawn from scans of the original stamp impressions, this typeface is available in both regular and oblique versions.

JY Ætna was designed originally by Francesco Griffo in 1495, and appeared in a book by Cardinal Bembo the following year. The typeface was re-created by Jack Yan in 1994, in time for its 500th anniversary. The original x-heights, quaint letters and other niceties have been restored. An italic complement, based on the design by Giovantonio Tagliente, has also been developed. JY Ætna has been one of JY&A Fonts’ more popular families over the years, with some typographers preferring its taller ascenders and descenders for headline work.

Desert Song Script is a beautiful font for those who are needing of elegance and stylish in their designs and particularly well suited for wedding invitations, cards and feminine branding. My affection for Slab Serifs began in the early 1960s in Kansas City with Rob Roy Kelly and his fabulous collection of wood type. In the 1970s tried to re-create a Nebiolo Egiziano for Roger Black. Again for Roger, in the 1980s I designed a Slab Serif logo for Newsweek Magazine. Finally, in 2003, designed the Sutro Family. There were things I didn't like about it, so when I did Version 2 for Open Type, I changed it around a little, making it a much nicer Sutro.

The evocative and original Retrofit is based on typefaces of the 1940s and 50s, which extolled the virtues of American products in glossy magazines for the new suburban consumer. Oversized terminal bulbs and occasional slab serifs lend a rhythm and a bouncing baseline provides just the "zing" to spice up that bland typographic treatise. Retrofit's easy familiarity can be seen on children's books, games, food packaging, and other places where a kid friendly note is needed. Retrofit has been adapted by Quickutz for their punched letter cutting tool, and re-named "Maggie".

Frakto is a two-weight family of calligraphic Fraktur-style typefaces designed by Julius de Goede. One of the main categories of Blackletter typefaces, Fraktur was developed around 1517, and was used throughout Germany and Northern Europe well into the 20th century. With Frakto, Julius de Goede has re-applied the written element of the script back into the Fraktur style, rejuvenating and reinvigorating it for 21st century display use. Frakto is the perfect fit for certificates and newsletter headlines. We recommended using it in point sizes from 12-pt on up.

Blackletter fonts are timelessly beautiful and still very popular. At some point, it seems that every type designer discovers the beauty of these forms and the great pleasure in creating blackletter characters. Like also Dutch designer Coen Hofmann who, after designing Caxtonian Gothic, has designed yet another Blackletter font: Holland Gothic. Holland Gothic reminds of the 18th century »Duytsch« typefaces of Joan Michael Fleischmann and Christoffel Van Dyck. But Hofmann was mainly inspired by the Dutch calligraphers from the 17th and 18th century. Holland Gothic develops its full charm and beauty at larger sizes because of the hairlines in the upper case characters. Nexus (2004) consists of three matching variants – a serif, a sans and a slab – which makes it a highly versatile typeface. Nexus started as an alternative to Seria, a typeface Majoor had designed some 5 years earlier. But soon the design developed into a new typeface, with numerous changes in proportions and in details and with a redrawn italic. Besides the three connected versions (Nexus Serif, Nexus Sans, Nexus Mix) Majoor designed a monospaced version called Nexus Typewriter.
