Don’t let the name “Trippy Hippie JNL” fool you. Although the type design fits well with the 1960s-70s hippie movement and the “love generation”, the design is actually straight out of a page from a vintage German lettering textbook entitled “50 Alphabete fur Technikur und Fachschulen” (loosely translated to “50 Alphabets for Technicians and Specialized Schools”). It’s another novelty, free form Art Nouveau hand lettered alphabet that works well in recreating 1920s period pieces or for designing a retro-inspired rock and roll concert poster reminiscent of the 1960s. The name of the typeface is from a line in the 1966 pop hit “Mellow Yellow by Donovan (Leitch), and his extended pronunciation of ‘electrical’: “…E-lec-a-tric-cal’ banana is going to be the very next craze…” Caps only Fonts. Many times, when a new creative process is starting, it is triggered by an everyday action or item. In this case, the looks of a lady’s watch inspired Michael Herold to create his new typeface LUX. The sight of the chronograph sparked associations of the 1950s in Mr. Herold: While this decade was predominantly dominated by brush and feather scripts, there was also a bloom of strict and modern architecture. This special mix of strength and retro style is exactly what Michael Herold is trying to capture in his LUX. The result is a typeface which is perfectly suitable for use on book covers, posters and claims – thanks to its striking impression. The name LUX, Latin for light, is inspired by the high bright-dark contrast within the individual characters. Oft sind es alltägliche Gegenstände, die das Bestreben eines neuen kreativen Prozesses auslösen. So entspringt auch die Inspiration zur Erschaffung der LUX von Michael Herold dem Anblick einer Damenuhr. Cannoli was inspired by the delicacy of the Sicilian pastry, and the robust charm of its landscape.
