In its heyday, the Starlight Room of the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City quite frequently printed lunch and dinner menus for not only their rotating bill of fare, but also for special events held there. The 1937 Electrolux (Eastern) Appreciation Banquet has its own menu cover, and the lettering was in a simple, yet Art-Deco influenced condensed block design with squared features. This simple and quirky typeface has been digitally redrawn as Sales Convention JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Inspired by her Scandinavian heritage, Andrea Leksen created this modern geometric sans serif reminiscent of Scandinavian design and typography. With its tall x-height and monoweight strokes, Nordeco will be best showcased at large sizes, in headlines and other display uses. Alf Becker graced many issues of “Signs of the Times” (a trade magazine for the sign industry) with his innovative hand lettered alphabets for others to use as design inspirations. His 134th submission was titled “Post Card Type”, a condensed thick-and-thin stylized Art Deco design. This served as the inspiration for Tourist Postcard JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. Thanks to Tod Swormstedt of S.T. Modified Gothic is an art deco titling face developed by the Linotype Design Studio. This typeface includes the following features: letterforms drawn with a monoweight line, a relatively narrow character base, proportionally altered small caps" in lieu of a lower case, and a distinctly round feeling. Love songs are the perennials of music, outlasting all other popular fads and styles that come and go. The 1920s through the 1940s is considered by some to be the Golden Age of the American love song. Thousands upon thousands of copies of popular sheet music sold, and the cover lettering and art on many titles were from some of the finest illustrators of their time. Love Song JNL recreates the Art Deco-flavored design found on one such piece of sheet music from the 1930s.

Transat Text is a geometric sans serif typeface, and is the more rational sibling to the unabashedly Art Deco "Transat". Transat Text has a slightly taller x-height than its counterpart, making it easier to read at small sizes, but also performs admirably in larger display settings. A page from an "ideas booklet" that was copyrighted in 1939 by the Sanford Ink Company displayed a hand lettered variation on the counter-less [or solid] alphabet that so typified the Art Deco style of the times. Bold, brash and beautiful, Upscale JNL evokes high-end department stores, fine millinery shops, cafeterias, night clubs and other business establishments from the Streamline era. This type of lettering style was a workhorse, and could (and still can) tackle any message with strength, clean lines and class.

Naïve Inline is a layered serif handwritten font designed by Fanny Coulez and Julien Saurin in Paris. Our goal was to draw a font with finely irregular lines that give a human and whimsical feeling. We designed three weights to assure a good readability whatever the size. The free-form Art Nouveau hand lettering on the cover of the 1918 sheet music for “Smilin’ Through” (from the MGM motion picture of the same name starring Norma Shearer) is the model for Upbeat JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions.

The free form hand lettering from the titles and credits of the 1964 French film comedy “Le Gendarme de Saint-Tropez” [“The Policeman from Saint-Tropez”] was the basis for Off Duty JNL – which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Three of the four letters of the name “Jane” on the cover of a vintage piece of sheet music inspired So Nouveau JNL. The free-form swoops emulating the pen lettering of the early 1900s adds a nostalgic charm to this typeface.
