Balboa Plus is a condensed sans serif display family. It was originally conceived as a simple black and white typeface. But it seemed unfinished, begging for something more. I decided to try adding a couple layers of fill and detail to try and make it interesting. The result is this four-layer chromatic font family. The Primary Font is the Main Font. The other fonts ( Fill, Inline, and Gradient) only exist to support the Primary Font. The Fill font should sit behind the Primary font (there is a little color trapping going on). The rest is even easier. There is a free downloadable PDF Balboa User Manual in the Gallery section for this family. It has samples and some backstory. Balboa™ is a trademark of Parkinson Type Design.

The inspiration source for MFC Falconer Monogram is an unusual hand-drawn design from a vintage embroidery publication which relies on rigid geometric letterforms to create an upward stepping framework. This monogram which evokes visions of it embossed or printed on antique baking tins was originally intended to adorn handkerchiefs, but the possibilities of its use are up to your imagination. A bit of experimentation with the Art Deco-flavored Sign Card JNL brings forth a hybrid alphabet where Art Deco meets Western. The result is Kalvesta JNL. This font's unusual character shapes defy and yet redefine the notion of the classic Western alphabet. The name is from a town in Kansas.

Sign Crafters JNL is a solidified version of the Deco-flavored Eckhardt Dualine JNL.

These are the classical arabesques published in Ludwig Petzendorfer's Schriften-Atlas. Eine Sammlung der wichtigsten Schreib- und Druckschriften aus alter und neuer Zeit nebst Initialen, Monogrammen, Mappen, Landeskarten und heraldischen Motiven fur die praktischen Zwecke des Kunstgewerbes, 1889. With a stylish Dutch accent, this font draws inspiration from a 1935 brochure by the talented graphic designer and artist Dirk Hart. Carrying different hand-drawn lettershapes on upper and lower case slots despite being a unicase typeface, this font also brings a nice set of ornaments and complete sets of initial and terminal swash forms. When working with OpenType savvy applications these can conveniently be applied at the click of a button, thanks to the smart swashes programming, which will change the first and last letters in words with its corresponding initial or terminal forms. There are also some stylistic alternates for a (yet) more decorated look. The black version, with a somewhat art-deco feeling with added boldness, is also very decorative and contains the same features as the regular cut: smart swashes, different letterforms on upper and lowercase slots, ornaments and stylistic alternates.

Unique and decorative signage for many drive-ins, motels, food stores and other businesses of the 1940s had what was referred to as “privilege signs” provided by one of the major cola brands. Consisting of the brand’s emblem on a decorative panel, the remainder of the sign would carry the desired message of the storekeeper (such as “Drive-In”) in prismatic, embossed metal letters. Inspired by the Art Deco sans serif style of those vintage signs, Privilege Sign Two JNL recreates the type design in both regular and oblique versions. The name says it all: here's a faithful revival of a Schelter und Geiseck release from 1911, designed by Moritz Greishaber and originally called Monos.
