Wine Cellar JNL is a bold, yet casual display face found on some 1930s-era sheet music entitled "Everybody Wants a Key to My Cellar". Since the subject of the song had a number of good times underneath the house, it's a fitting name for the font. The hand lettering for the original song sheet showed strong influence of the 1920s and the Art Nouveau style, and has hints of the popular metal type "Hobo" in its character shapes.

Fort Courage JNL is a bold slab serif wood type in the French Clarendon genre, taking its name as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the cavalry fort populated by a number of post-Civil War misfits in the 1960s television comedy "F Troop".

The Federal Art Project division of the WPA (Works Progress Administration) employed numerous artists, musicians, actors and other creative sorts in a effort to help many survive the Great Depression of the 1930s. One of the posters created by this project was for a "Card Party and Barter Benefit" with proceeds going toward the Nassau Art Teachers Benefit Fund - taking place at the Coca-Cola plant in Rockville Centre, New York. East Village JNL was derived from this poster, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

For decades, the Greenwich Village area of New York was a home for artists, poets, writers and free-thinkers of their time who were labeled "Bohemians" because of their non-conformist approach to life and the arts. Greenwich Village JNL is an Art Nouveau-influenced typeface with a Bohemian approach in its double crossbars on the A and H; all the while being a nice example of hand lettering found on a vintage piece of sheet music.

These are taken right from the original source material, an extremely rare 1910 catalog of an English wood type maker called Day & Collins in London. As the name says it, these words are intended to attract attention, to spice up posters, packaging or advertisement designs. I made these available for the digital age, leaving the original texture of printed wood type at the highest detail possible.

Rock and Cola's design is clearly inspired by the sinuous shapes of the world's most famous drink's logo. 1st Ave is the most experimental of my typefaces. I took a picture of a metal and neon sign in the East Village of New York City. These signs are slowly being replaced by LED and LCD displays, but if you look hard, you can still find quite a few in the city. The signs give a mid 20th century feel to the city. To design 1st Ave, I took a picture of the sign, scanned it and increased the contrast in Photoshop so that the photographic forms became line art. There weren't enough letterforms in the sign to create the whole alphabet, so I cut up the strokes and collaged them back together to finish the entire alphabet. Important Note: 1st Ave is an experimental typeface and is not compatible with certain software such as Microsoft Word.

A piece of hand lettered sheet music from the era of the "Roaring Twenties" served as a model for Raccoon Coat JNL. It was a time of Prohibition, bathtub gin, flappers and college boys decked out in beanies and raccoon coats. College pennants, ukuleles and "23 Skidoo" were all part of the youth culture during this period; which gave us such dances at the Charleston, the Black Bottom and the Lindy Hop.
