A 1928 poster for a café by German artist Karl Bauer informed the creation of this charming and expansive typeface. This font hops, bops, flip-flops and never stops, and is named after a fictitious café which offers cool jazz and fast service. Both versions contain the complete Unicode 1252 (Latin) and Unicode 1250 (Central European) character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

This delightful dervish is based on handlettering from a 1928 poster for a steamship line by renowned British artist Austin Cooper. It’s essentially a monocase font, with the exception of the letter A, which twirls in one direction in uppercase, and the opposite direction in lowercase. This font contains the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus support for Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.

The font is named after the Armenian writer Theodoros Grigor Lapchinchian (Armenian Թեոդորոս Գրիգորի Լափչինճյան: March 5, 1873, Constantinople — May 24, 1928), who in 1912 published book "Type and Letter" (Armenian: Տիպ ու տառ), dedicated to 1500th anniversary of the creation of the Armenian alphabet and the 400th anniversary of Armenian printing. The letter shapes are influenced by some Armenian fonts of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Working at American Type Founders from a Bruce Foundry recutting, Morris Fuller Benton worked out the dramatics of the English Fat Face, and in 1928 produced Ultra Bodoni, a headline spectacular. Black Drum is a rare revival typewriter face, made digital from analog samples gathered with great care by Coniglio Type. A time and place; type and life. Black Drum is contemporary designer type, made from the struck steel hammers of an Art Deco Period san serif face transferred from a mechanical 1926 custom editor Royal Portable typewriter. Anna Conroy of Type Heritage, LLC, Philadelphia comments on Black Drum and its new place in time today: “Wow! nice lookin’ face Joseph! —Perfect, somewhere between Cable; [Rudolph Koch, 1927] (which was about the first transatlantic telegraph cable) with its raised x-height; and Futura [Paul Renner, 1928]. It all started with the letter S. I drew it, I liked it, I based a font around it! This is Pickled Limes, a tall and narrow single-case font. It's built clean from the ground up, for ultra-sharp lines and corners, as well as super-smooth curves. The slightly flared ends and quirky character mix make this font a ton of fun to use on its own, but it will also pair well with tons of hand-written styles! I've branched out on this one; in addition to over 300 Extended Latin characters, I've also included Unicode's 256 Cyrillic and 121 Greek characters for even more language support. Add in the 90+ alternates, ligatures, and catchwords, and Pickled Limes clocks in at just over 1000 characters. The main inspiration is from Art Nouveau which flourished in Europe at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. This design included furniture (Majorelle, Lalique) and architecture (Victor Horta, Henry Van de Velde, Gaudi, Alfons Mucha). But Hector Guimard remains the favorite for all aspects of its art and, of course, its typefaces used on the Parisian Metropolitan posters. In particular, the various kerning of the various letters he used to make the poster a whole design from singular designs, leading to numerous variations. As a designer, I first worked with the individual glyphs Hector Guimard designed and I discovered that they vary constantly from a poster to another, depending on the overall result he was looking for. Another difficulty in transferring his design to printing is that there was no lower case. I was excited to create the whole font from the original designs of Hector Guimard, incorporating its variations and "crazy kerning". After several attempts, it appeared to be impossible to include all variations and I slightly moved to my own new design as a complete font, upper and lower case, with kerning. I voluntarily limited the ascenders and descenders to the usual typography so that it can be used from 10 / 12 points. This version can be used to edit letters and books in the context of Art, specially Art Nouveau and Art Deco of course, posters of any kind.
