This font was inspired by one of Antoine Augereau's three roman typefaces: the Gros Romain (±16 Pts) size, used in 1533 to print Le miroir de l'âme..., a religious poetic compilation by Marguerite de Navarre, sister of the French king François the first. It seems possible that Augereau may have also engraved italic styles. This alphabet, with its complete small caps collection, is covering all West, East and Central European languages (including Baltic and Celtic) and Turkish.

Rialto dF is a book face inspired by calligraphic tradition. Named after the famous bridge in Venice, it was conceived as a bridge between calligraphy and typography, roman and italic. It can also be thought of as an imaginary bridge between Italy and Austria, since it is the result of collaboration started in 1995 between the Austrian Lui Karner and Venetian Giovanni de Faccio. The letterforms of Rialto dF were drawn directly in digital format with a starting point deriving from humanistic letterforms memorized in the hearts, minds and the manual ability of its designers… As tradition demands, uppercase, numerals and punctuation are used in combination with italics – the same solution adopted by Francesco Griffo when he cut his first italic for the Virgil, the first of the octavo series printed and published in Venice by Aldus Manutius in 1501. Rialto dF comes in two optical weights: Piccolo, for up to 14 pt, and Grande for 16pt and above. Alternate characters and various dingbats are also provided and these are available through OpenType features developed by type designer and technician Karsten Luecke.

Gorva is a geometric sans serif typeface affected by other geometric sans like Product Sans and Avenir. There are more 400 glyphs with special characters with circles on a, g, and r. All special characters are PUA Encoded, which means that you can access all special characters through Windows and Mac and that you can load them into any application. John Baskerville spared no effort to create the ultimate typographic book. He prepared deep black inks and smoothed paper to show to full effect the letters that he had John Handy cut from his own brilliant designs, based on a lifetime of calligraphy and stonecutting. Punches and matrices survive at the Cambridge University Press. The present design is an accurate recutting, with particular attention to George W. Jones’ revision from the metal of Baskerville’s English (14pt) roman and italic in 1929 for Linotype & Machinery Ltd; Mergenthaler Linotype imported this design to the USA two years later.

In searching for a Roman to use, I found there were bits of Bembo, Times, Garamond, etc., that I liked and bits that I did not. So I set out to take the best bits of all my favorite Romans and tried to create the ultimate Roman Typeface.

Litera was designed in 1983 by Michael Neugebauer, who used the same strict constructed design found in his typeface Circulus. In its figures are the clear geometric forms of the circle, triangle and rectangle, which were also the main forms of Bauhaus designs. The overall look of Litera is modern, clear and light. Distinguishing characteristics are the openness and the e and P and the particularly long cross stroke of the G. The cool Litera is best for middle length texts and headlines. Similar typefaces include Futura from Paul Renner and Avenir from Adrian Frutiger.

San Marco is a part of the 1990 program Type before Gutenberg, which included the work of twelve contemporary font designers and represented styles from across the ages. Linotype offers a package including all these fonts on its web page, www.fonts.de. San Marco was designed by Karlgeorg Hoefer and brings to mind the style of the Italian Gothic found on the cathedrals of Milan and Florence as well as on the facade of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice. Its highly stylized characters make San Marco a good choice for extravagant typography.

ITC Chivalry is a calligraphic hybrid that honors the tradition of combining Roman capitals with italic lowercase letters. Drawn by Missouri lettering artist Rob Leuschke, who used a flat-nib pen on textured watercolor stock and then converted the drawings into a digital font, the design combines an old world" feel with "new world" legibility. A companion set of black letter caps completes the suite of characters. "I've loved drawing letters for as long as I can remember," says Leuschke. "Even in kindergarten, I tried to draw letters like my teacher." After graduating from college, Leuschke worked for a short time at a sign company in St. Louis, and in the early 1980s began working at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. His talent as a calligrapher and lettering artist eventually brought him back to St. Louis to begin a freelance career. Since then Leuschke has created over 250 fonts, primarily for the greeting card industry, that are now being used on work for his clients all over the world. Leuschke first conceived of the face as just the black letter caps; he later added the Roman letters to give the design more versatility. The Roman caps of ITC Chivalry combined with the lowercase are well suited to blocks of copy, while the more decorative black letter caps are ideal for showcasing short text of just a few words. Veteran designer Bo Berndal has created Cartesius, an oldstyle serif typeface with roots in the 16th and 17th centuries, France and Venice. Bo Berndal: "Rene Decartes, the great French philosopher, was invited to Sweden in the 17th century, when the country was at the height of its power. In the university city of Uppsala he used the Latin name form Cartesius. The typeface that carries his name is inspired by letterforms from the 1600s, but upper case letters are of pure Roman type". Cartesius holds up well even under less than perfect circumstances, and is suitable for magazine and book design. It comes with a full range of styles, including small caps. Linotype Nowe Ateny is part of the Take Type Library, which features the winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest from 1994 to 1997. Designed by Dariusz Nowak-Nova, Nowe Ateny is a frantic handwriting font whose capital letters include technical-looking grid lines and end points. These seem to anchor the letters without reducing their volatility. The font consciously lacks elements which increase legibility, sacrificing them for the sake of more design oriented ideals. Nowe Ateny is thus good for headlines in larger point sizes, especially when the look of the text is as important as its content.

All three have the same lower case which includes three swash characters for g, s and t, available as discretionary ligatures in OpenType versions, and manually otherwise. All include two authentic ornaments, also penned by Koch. Gothicus Roman has three additional floret ornaments.
