The rasterized square (clear, therefore 4 as part of the font name) was the constructive basis. The intention was to put all characters within this grid and produce a highly structured, yet lively, resting in itself, display font. Relaxed but exciting, just. An absolutely noteworthy detail are the classical construction principles (based on a typography book from the 50's for poster designers), the so-called optical weighting, derived and slightly exaggerated character elements: The characters are not purely symmetrical and the curve shapes do not close justified with the surrounding square. Loops and tongues slightly hang over; the upper bows are slightly less protruding than lower ones, etc. The kerning is tuned to fit these design details: the white space between the characters match the same filling space.

This is a monospace font for the Braille alphabet. The idea came while exploring new ways to display the regular braille glyph ( 3 rows of 2 dots ). The glyph design is inspired by "stackable multiple board" games like the famous Vulcan chess (from Star Trek series) and the Qubic (3D tic-tac-toe). The stack is made from 3 levels, each level is a 3x3 grid with 2 "playable" cells (South-West and North-East). Each cell can be either empty, filled by a white square token or a black square token. The 3D effect is obtained by means of the classic isometric perspective. Lowercase letters use black tokens, while uppercase letters use white tokens. Most special characters (e.g. digits, *$#@, []{}() etc.. ) are also provided for special usages like program source code (see poster 5).

This font based on and inspired by stencil signage in construction site. As you can see, heavy and rugged glyph is very eye-grabbing for headline and titling.

Ablaj, a typeface created for texts and titles, with a family of 8 weights. It is designed as a modern narrative of the ancient Kufic script by MhrfType. In the 1943 Three Stooges comedy short “Higher than a Kite”, Curly reaches into a box with the label “hand grenades” painted on its side and pulls out one of the devices. The bold, squared stencil hand lettering on that prop inspired Stencil Label JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

An ad in the May 27, 1939 issue of "Motion Picture Herald" for the film "Young Mr. Lincoln" featured the film's title hand lettered in a squared, bold pen lettering with rounded terminals along with an incised 'engraving' line. This formed the basis for Political Trend JNL, which available in both regular and oblique versions.

Is it a grid font? Hell no! Even though being kinda square, the Floink font got a funky will of its own. Good for massive text or just a funky looking headline. Hand lettering from the 1958 movie poster for “Vertigo” (designed by Saul Bass) was the inspiration for the digital font Sinister Undertones JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. The quirkiness of this irregular, squared-edge sans – despite its simplicity – perfectly captured the mood and drama of Alfred Hitchcock’s film production.

“MEME” Regular is a work in progress designed in a square format. It is all Caps with small caps in the lower case. With over 80 design glyphs for you to use creatively. “MEME” is also a great font to add to your futuristic headline fonts, I am adding new characters all the time.

The Algerian designer Taouffik Semmad created the fonts in 1997. Taouffik Semmad grew up speaking Algerian-Arabic dialect and French, studied Russian, and is now living in Montreal. This could perhaps explain his current passion, to "find a universal writing", which he admits is a Utopian idea. Created with brush and Chinese ink, the characters of ITC Atmosphere came from Semmad's hand but only after they were fully formed in his mind's eye.

This unusual font was designed by Alessio Leonardi, who plays with the difference between content and impression. At first glance the font looks almost like a row of pictograms or Asiatic characters. The forms become Arabic letters when the characters are set together to form words. HaManga Irregular is a good font to use when the reader is supposed to contemplate not only the text but the form of what he or she sees.
