Stubble is a distressed grunge font with many useful variations that make things easy. It comes in both a Regular and Bold version, and a Smudged version as if the print block has slipped a little bit just at the vital moment. Also there’s 2 jumbled versions with the letters and numbers, and some punctuation, at odd angles and slightly off-whack; there’s 2 versions with little bits of overprint on most of the main characters (as if the corners of the block or stamp have just caught the paper); a couple of Caps Only versions; plus condensed and expanded versions of the main faces. To Rafaella, a menina dos cachos. We, designers, have grown accustomed to seeing that lowercase letters—not only in calligraphy but also in typography (1)—may be very playful and decorative. Almost every part of them can become a potential swash, ligature or decorative accolade (2) if the designer has some expertise regarding this matter. However, since we are living in an era that elevates the status of handcrafts, lettering has gained a lot of ground in different kinds of mediums, and with it there’s a sort of overuse of capitals. This may be due to the reason that lettering pieces need a high impact to convey their messages and many times why big capitals are the only solution. With this in mind, I started Rafaella: A font consisting entirely of capitals which go from unadorned to very decorative. Rafaella has ductus and forms vaguely based on the 1970s Bookman-like styled fonts. The presence and behaviour of serifs and ball terminals in this style were the perfect excuse to make really attractive aternates which the user can choose from the glyphs panel. The result is a font full of life. Able to be both very playful and formal due to its roman style which can be combined with (and between) a wide range of other styles of expressive scripts or geometric fonts with nice results (3). Online auctions continue to be a surprising wealth of font design inspiration. In this instance, a number of silk embroidered Art Deco initials inside inverted triangles inspired Deco Pennant Initials JNL. The uppercase version is white lettering on a black background – similar to the originals. On the lowercase keys is a set of initials that are black on white with a black border. Since the inverted triangles resemble pennants, there’s a solid black blank on the left parenthesis key and a outlined blank one on the right parenthesis key. In this way, the initials could be used for monograms or interspersed with the blanks to form short banner messages.

The name Angryhog came out of nowhere out of free association. "When you're working on a typeface on the Mac it demands a name from you which I find a bit confrontational" says Donaldson. ITC Angryhog brings together Roman and Gothic influences in a quirky and sophisticated display face. Characteristic of this typeface are its sharp, pointed forms, especially noticeable in the serifs, which give ITC Angryhog a restless, almost aggressive feel. It is as though the letters have a mind of their own and ignore all rules and regulations. ITC Angryhog is a perfect typeface for comics or satire, best suited to short to middle length texts and headlines.

ITC Ludwig has an edge. It's nervous, tense - maybe even a little scary. Drawn by Italian designer Giuseppe Errico, ITC Ludwig refuses to be confined to a traditional baseline. Its twisted lowercase g" and an "e" that could double as an upside-down "a" both add to the design's spooky personality. As a young man, Errico studied to be a fine artist. He became a graphic designer only after a “long reflection period,” he says. His early training is evident in many of ITC Ludwig's suggestive qualities. There is far more to this face than cranking up the “distort” knob in Fontographer. Reflection and personal expression are at its core."

A very expanded sans serif font in capital letters inspired by the inscription on a bank note Old bank notes tend to have a very typical typography. Usually they carry decorative and elaborately designed markings. For one thing, they must be practically impossible to forge and for another, they should make a respectable and legitimate impression. And in the days of copper and steel engravings, that meant nothing less than creating ornate, shaded or otherwise complicated scripts. Designing the appropriate script was literally in the hands of the engraver. That’s why I noticed this bank note from 1948. It is the first 20 mark bill in the then newly created currency ”Deutsche Mark.“ All other bank notes of the 1948 series show daintier forms of typography with an obvious tendency toward modern face. The 1949 series which followed shortly thereafter reveals the more complicated script as well. For whatever reason, only this 20 mark bill displays this extremely expanded sans serif variation of the otherwise Roman form applied. This peculiarity led me in the year 2010 to create a complete font from the single word ”Banknote.“ Back to those days in the 40’s, the initial edition of DM bank notes was carried out by a special US-American printer who was under pressure of completing on time and whose engravers not only engraved but also designed. So that’s why the bank notes resemble dollars and don’t even look like European currency. That also explains some of the uniquely designed characters when looked at in detail. Especially the almost serif type form on the letters C, G, S and Z, but also L and T owe their look to the ”American touch.“ The ingoFont Banknote 1948 comprises all characters of the Latin typeface according to ISO 8859 for all European languages including Turkish and Baltic languages. In order to maintain the character of the original, the ”creation“ of lower case letters was waived. This factor doesn’t contribute to legibility, but this kind of type is not intended for long texts anyway; rather, it unfolds its entire attraction when used as a display font, for example on posters. Banknote 1948 is also very suitable for distortion and other alien techniques, without too much harm being done to the characteristic forms. With Banknote 1948 ingoFonts discloses a font like scripts which were used in advertising of the 1940’s and 50’s and were popular around the world. But even today the use of this kind of font can be expedient, especially considering how Banknote 1948, for its time of origin, impresses with amazingly modern detail.

Footloose was a work in progress when its original designer, my friend and colleague Bob Alonso, passed away. Back then just 14 lowercase letters were designed so far. Several years have since gone by, but lately I took on the task of developing Bob’s design into a full-fledged font. The distinctive style of his supplied letterforms provided much inspiration. In blocks of short text there is a dynamic that communicates much verve and vigor, owing in part to gracefully curving lines and high contrast of stroke weight. I guess you could say that this project has been a sort of “passing on of the baton”; and I trust that Bob would have been pleased with the outcome.
