Hand Cut Stencil JNL is a condensed Roman typeface modeled from an antique tin stencil hand cut for shipping merchandise. The design is available in regular and oblique versions.

Based on Bank Gothic designed by Morris Fuller Benton in the 30th, Bank Sans Caps from Elsner+Flake offers a wide variety of weights from Light to Bold with Compressed, Semi Condensed and Condensed widths. All weights are also available with Cyrillic character sets.

Letterpress Stock Cuts JNL is another assemblage of classic cartoons and illustrations re-drawn from vintage source material.

Roma Initial Caps JNL is a set of alphabet caps drawn from elegant lettering found in an old sign painter's manual. The upper case keys have the letters in white on black backgrounds, while the lower case has the letters in black on a white background with a black border.

Once again, another eclectic mix of vintage cartoons, ad cuts, sales builders, dingbats, borders and embellishments come together in Print Shop Cuts JNL. These charming images add that touch of "retro" to any digital or print project.

A set of slab serif framed capitals is displayed in the 1906 edition of the Keystone Type Foundry specimen book as “John Alden Initials”. Digitally redrawn as Keyden Drop Caps JNL, regular and reverse versions are available in one font file. Upper case keys contain the regular version, lower case keys have the reverse version. Blanks frames for each are on the parenthesis keys. The font’s name is a hybrid of both ‘Keystone’ and ‘Alden’. From the pages of the 1939 French lettering book “Modèles de lettres modernes par Georges Léculier” (“Models of Modern Lettering”) comes an attractive and unusual set of initial drop caps made from square letters adorned with multiple vertical lines. Originally designed as white letters on black backgrounds, an additional set with black letters on white backgrounds comprise Deco Drop Caps JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions.

Made in collaboration with my 14-year-old daughter, this font embodies her desire for people to rise up and resist injustice in this world. The font is neat, legible, and yet slightly playful.

An online reproduction of a trade ad circa the 1950s for comedian-actor Paul Gilbert featured his name in the hand-drawn lettering that serves as the basis for Stand Up JNL. While the style of the typeface is derivative of the Latin Spur faces used popularly since the 1800s, the playful – almost awkward angles create a casual design that evokes good times. It should be noted that the extremes of such angles might appear ill-spaced unless kerning is turned on within the application where the typeface will be used.

Linem Up JNL is based on one of Alf R. Becker's alphabets for Signs of the Times magazine. With A-Z only and basic punctuation, it is best used in very limited text at larger point sizes. Thanks to Tod Swormstedt of ST Publications (and the curator of the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati, Ohio) for providing the reference material.

The 1937 sheet music for the tune "Sweet Stranger" has the title hand lettered in a round cornered Art Deco sans with an inline featuring square corners. Beginning in January, 1932, Becker, at the request of then-editor E. Thomas Kelly, supplied SIGNS of the Times magazine’s new Art and Design section with an alphabet a month, a project predicted to last only two years. Misjudging the popularity of the “series”, it instead ran for 27 years, ending finally two months before Becker’s death in 1959, for a grand total of 320 alphabets, a nearly perfect, uninterrupted run. In late 1941, almost ten years after the first alphabet was published, 100 of those alphabets were compiled and published in bookform under the title, “100 Alphabets”, by Alf R. Becker. And so, as published in August, 1937, The Fontry presents the truly "modern" version of Becker’s 187th alphabet, Moderne Caps, complete with OpenType features and Central European language support.
