MVB Embarcadero lies in a space between grotesque sans serifs and the vernacular signage lettering drawn by engineers. It’s a style that happens to convey credibility and forthrightness without pretense—it’s anti-style, actually. As is often the case with a type design that develops over several years, Embarcadero isn’t the realization of a specific concept. In the ’90s Mark van Bronkhorst began digitizing a blocky slab serif from the Victorian era, which was then set aside for many years. He later revisited the design, paring it down to its bare essentials, and as more time passed, it evolved from a grid-based outline to curves that echoed the rigid skeleton of the original. Eventually it became a complete family with all the readability requirements of a text sans serif, yet maintaining the subtle eccentricities of its inspiration. Functionally, the Embarcadero family is as adaptable as its design. Akagi started as a rough sketch while on a really long plane ride to Tokyo in 2007. I wanted to develop a sans that was a complete departure from my successful Aaux Pro (now Aaux Next) sans serif family. Whereas Aaux and its siblings are rather unforgiving and stark in their presentation, I wanted this new sans serif to "smile" at you when it's on the page. When the plane landed and I realized I did not sleep through the 15 hour trip, my brain shut off, the laptop closed and I hopped in the car to the hotel—forgetting the "new sans" folder on my desktop. Fast forward a few months and I found myself seeing a lot of crisp, rigid, robot-like sans serif typefaces everywhere... I enjoy these new crop of faces but wanted to see something "friendlier" and remembered my earlier sketch work. The groundwork was there screaming at me to complete and Akagi arose from the ashes. To be truly satisfied with it personally, a great deal of time was spent trying to create a harmony between line and curve in an attempt to show that you can be crisp, clean and legible and still keep some personality. The Light and Fat weights (regular and italic) are my favorites and I hope to see them as the workhorses of the typeface.

The idea for this completely new font design with overlapping characters came when Axel Stoltenberg, longtime IKARUS program developer at URW + +, visited a restaurant. As it can be seen quite often , the daily specials were offered handwritten with chalk on a blackboard applying a writing technique never been available before for digital fonts: each character is partly covered by its predecessor creating a three-dimensional effect. The implementation of this unusual notation for digital setting required a lot of programming and testing until all necessary character variants were produced and set properly always using the correct form. In order to achieve this, the OpenType Pro font ThreeDee contains about 12,400 characters and all the necessary OpenType features (GSUB ) for the automatic setting in OTF savvy application programs. The slightly playful basic design for ThreeDee was created by Anna Stoltenberg , the daughter of Axel, specially devised for the innovative representation and support of its special nature. Jure Stojan first created JY Klin for a student magazine in Ljubljana, Slovenia. ‘It was borne out of my frustration with layout [programs] and their taste for messing with decent fonts (making the headline occupy the entire column width at any cost, for instance). Therefore, I designed a “heavy duty” display font—it can be extended up to 120 per cent without any loss in quality (it is fairly condensed, so no one could think of squeezing it any further). I even used the font, stretched by the very 120 per cent, for 10 point text and the result was surprisingly legible (given some peculiar details prominent at display size).’

The Modesto Text Family is text in name only. It’s called Text because it has a Lower Case, and also to distinguish it from the rest of the Modesto clan. Modesto is a loose-knit family based on a signpainters lettering style popular in the late-19th and early-20th centuries. It evolved from the lettering I used for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Baily Circus Logo. The Modesto family was not planned. It just happened, a few fonts at a time over about fifteen years. Inspired by a set of vintage alphabet game tile pieces, Newark JNL has similar traits to other slab serif Romans, but enough 'quirky' letter widths to break the rules and have it stand out on its own merits. The name derives from font work files in progress, often saved as 'new work' until a fitting name is decided upon. It seemed only right that this phrase be turned around into a font name itself. A 1918 lettering instruction book by William Hugh Gordon presented a number of lettering styles that were geared toward sign and show card painters along with tips and tricks regarding the correct construction of such signs for maximum effect. One pen lettered Roman alphabet with a beautiful set of numerals has been recreated digitally as Pen Elegant JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. To note, Gordon was the co-inventor of the Speedball lettering pen with Ross F. George in 1915.

The box cover of “Drawing Stencils No. 3 for Use on Slate or Paper” [a children’s drawing set produced by Montgomery, Ward & Company of Chicago circa the 1890s] had its title in an elegant spurred Roman type face. Working from the few letters available, a complete character set was created that resulted in Antique Packaging JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. The inspiration source for MFC Sansome Monogram is a decorative serif lettering style that comes from the book Henderson's Sign Painter from 1906. Known as "Rustic Roman" and originally designed by John F. Irwin, this fantastic typeface has been digitally revived and expanded for monogram designs. While the original lettering did not include numerals and was never originally intended for monograms, its ornate nature lends itself so wonderfully to the craft. New Clear Era is part of a large ongoing project investigating classicism and legibility. The regular version is the base font. Numerous permutations will be performed on this underlying skeleton. Also investigated are the ideas of an extended type family, and trying to understand what makes a contemporary legible, serif typeface. The Mix versions combine characters from the Roman and Display to make quirky fonts that can be comfortably used for setting text. Mix One is the most quirky; Mix Three is the least.

There's a cemetery in Castine, Maine, a lovely coastal town perhaps best known for Maine Maritime Academy and a surviving crop of stately old American elms, with headstones dating back into the 18th century -- the standard old headstone shape, often topped by winged skulls. Thanks to a local historical society volunteer, I got my hands on a couple rubbings; these show a particular style of stonecarving that proved captivating to the point of typeface design. Castine has a full character set in both roman and italic styles.

Whittington is a revival of a congenial ‘modern’ typeface of the mid nineteenth century, unassuming and businesslike with an even colour that reads comfortably over long stretches. It is intended primarily for use in running text. Whittington provides wide support for west, central, and east European languages that use the roman alphabet. Among its OpenType features are ligatures, small caps, several sets of numerals, contextual alternates, intelligent implementation of long ‘s’, and fractions.
