Big Jim Roberts was my dad. A dedicated family man who taught us about faith, values and love is missed by our family. Jim just about did it all. Catchwords have always been offered alongside standard alphabets in wood type catalogs and so often appear on posters as a decorative punch that they have become part of the wood type vernacular. Words like 'The', 'And', 'To', 'For', and less common abbreviations could be inserted into a design along with decorative ornaments or stars when space was tight or to add variety in the design. The Younger Futhark, also called Scandinavian runes, is a runic alphabet and a reduced form of the Elder Futhark, with only 16 characters, in use from about the 9th century, after a "transitional period" during the 7th and 8th centuries. The reduction, somewhat paradoxically, happened at the same time as phonetic changes that led to a greater number of different phonemes in the spoken language, when Proto-Norse evolved into Old Norse. Also, the writing custom avoided carving the same rune consecutively for the same sound, so the spoken distinction between long and short vowels was lost in writing. Thus, the language included distinct sounds and minimal pairs that were written the same. The Younger Futhark is divided into long-branch (Danish) and short-twig (Swedish and Norwegian) runes; in the 10th century, it was further expanded by the "Hälsinge Runes" or staveless runes. The lifetime of the Younger Futhark corresponds roughly to the Viking Age. Their use declined after the Christianization of Scandinavia; most writing in Scandinavia from the 12th century was in the Latin alphabet, but the runic scripts survived in marginal use in the form of the medieval runes (in use ca. 1100–1500) and the Latinised Dalecarlian runes (ca. 1500–1910)

Some words from the designer, Frantisek Storm... Designed by Josef Tyfa in 1959, digitalized by F. Storm in 1996. This Roman and Italic are well-known perhaps to all Czech graphic artists and typographers ever since their release. Although this type face in some details is under the sway of the period of its rise, its importance is timeless, in contradistinction to other famous types dating from the turn of the sixties which were found, after some time, to be trite. The italics live their own life, only their upper-case letters have the same expression as the basic design. Thin and fragile, they work excellently, emphasizing certain parts in the text by their perfect contrast of expression. When seen from a distance they are a little bit darker than the Roman face. Tyfa Roman was released in 1960 by Grafotechna in Prague for hot setting. Later on, Berthold produced letter matrices - "rulers" for Staromat devices, used for manual photosetting of display alphabets. In the eighties it was available on dry transfers of Transotype and today it is offered also by ITC. The meticulously executed designs of the individual letters in the 288 point size are arranged into a set of signs on a cardboard of about B2 in size. The yellowed paper reveals retouches by white paint on the ink. Blue lines mark the baseline, the capital line, the ascender and descender lines and the central verticals of the letters. With regard to the format of the flat scanner, the designs had to be reduced, with the use of a camera, to the format A4, i.e. to the upper-case letter height of about 30 mm. These were then scanned in 600 dpi resolution and read as a bitmap template to the FontStudio programme. The newly created bold type faces derive from Tyfa's designs of the letters "a", "n", "p", the darkness of which was increased further, approximately by 3%, to enhance their emphasizing function. The text designs have hairstrokes thickened by one third; the contrast between thin and thick strokes has been modified, in order to improve legibility, in sizes under 12 points. We have used electronic interpolation to produce the semi-bold designs. Josef Tyfa himself recommends to choose a somewhat darker design than the basic one for printing of books.

Bureau Grot is now accepted as the essence of tooth and character in an English 19th-century sans. The current family was first developed by David Berlow in 1989 from original specimens of the grotesques released by Stephenson Blake in Sheffield. These met with immediate success at the Tribune Companies and Newsweek, who had commissioned custom versions at the behest of Roger Black. Further weights were designed by Berlow for the launches of Entertainment Weekly and the Madrid daily El Sol, bringing the total to twelve styles by 1993. Jill Pichotta, Christian Schwartz, and Richard Lipton expanded the styles further, at which point the family name was shortened from Bureau Grotesque to Bureau Grot; FB 1989–2006

If your looking for a vintage animated typestyle that still feels current today, you've just found it! Mushmouth PB started as a digitization of a film typeface called "Albert" by LetterGraphics. This all capitals font has a super subtle bounce and a playful heavy weight. An extruded film variation of this typeface was used back in the day on Post's Frosted Rice Krinkles cereal. Named in tribute to the original font name "Albert", we picked a fellow member of Fat Albert's gang for the name of this font. The most space-saving sans serif This font saves more space than any of its kind! Slim proportions, but not “condensed” Characters which nearly touch Sparse ascenders and descenders Distinct forms How close to each other can the characters of a font get? Theoretically, as close as you want. But obviously, the words should still be legible. And as any designer knows, body clearance of characters also depends on other parameters such as point size and line spacing. In practice, there are always situations in which as much information as possible has to be positioned in as little space as possible. The ingoFont ÉconoSans is made for exactly this purpose. Even the name of the font implies its function: French for the infinitive “to save” is “économiser.” Now if that doesn’t sound good… The shapes of the upper and lower case letters are completely matter-of-fact, the way a modern font has got to be. The letters c e, and s are wide open to their neighbors. An especially distinguished trait of this font is the design of the “triangular” characters v w y x k z and A V W Y Z K X M N. And the open form of B R and P is also not typical in a sans serif. The distance between letters is kept tight and often the characters nearly touch, but only nearly. With ÉconoSans you gain approximately 20% more text in a line than with »Tahoma«, and even still more than 10% compared to »Helvetica«. ÉconoSans also includes tabular figures as well as ligatures. Among the ligatures, the double mm is especially unusual and is hardly familiar, but can contribute greatly to saving space without catching the reader’s eye.

The Regular style sets the word or phrase to begin the design, Shadow ensures it lifts off the background, and Outline attempts to restrain its ornate flair. Think of those as the foundation and use the rest of the styles for flamboyance. The Intricate and Filigree styles vary only in the thickness of the glyphs, with Filigree being thinner. Lace removes the external curls around each letter but keeps the internal negative space from those decorative lines. The Fancy style is a solid lettershape that includes its attendant elements, and the Dingbats are exactly as expected: borders, manicules, patterns, frames, and many stylized items to bring designs to life.

Almost every type designer feels the need, from time to time, to interrupt his or her serious work on complex text type systems for something more playful. In Luc(as)'s case this has often meant designing more typefaces. In the early 1990s, while working on Thesis, Luc(as) drew several display faces which were based on the shapes of TheSans but were either de(con)structive versions or experimental variations. Jesus Loves You All is a heretic thorny typeface vaguely based on the outlines of TheSans. Jesus Loves You was given a remarkable three-dimensional treatment in Abbott Miller's Dimensional Type project.

A nixie tube is a technology from the 50’s used to display numerals that are composed by metal filaments that light up much like a lamp bulb. Due to their beauty these little numerals (0-9) are a love case for any designer, and formally it’s where the inspiration for the Nixin typeface came from. All the other typeface characters and weights are an interpretation from the original 10 numerals, always keeping the same minimalistic spirit and formal elegance. Nixin is a geometric and regular typeface, with a vintage touch and a bit of modernism.

Macho Moustache is closely related to Macho Modular , the parent type with which it shares modular widths and most letterforms. The difference is that Macho Moustache follows the ‘Grotesque' tradition of tight apertures for a, c, e and s as well as some of the numerals. Original design work started together with Macho Modular in 2008. Now the range and communication potential of the Macho family has been developed with five weights. Since the Macho family was designed bearing in mind the idea of Themerson's semantic typography, Macho Moustache features all sets of modular brackets and underlinings.

In 1905 Berthold released an engraved blackletter font called Prinzess Kupferstichschrift. Based on an old printed remnant, I revived this beautiful open-face fraktur and enriched it with several OpenType features. As usual in my blackletter fonts, the round ‘s’ lies on the number sign key, and a traditional number sign can be accessed via the Discretionary Ligature feature and typing 'N-r-period'. In this font you have also the possibility to turn I, V, X, L, C, D, and M into Roman numerals by activating the Stylistic Alternates feature. And last but not least, various useful ligatures polish up this font.

The type design for Impecunious JNL comes from the 1939 sheet music for "You Don't Know How Much You Can Suffer (Until You Fall in Love)". The name comes from another piece of sheet music, 1899's "Impecunious Davis" [a piece of late 19th century tripe demeaning Black Americans]. However, the word "impecunious" was intriguing. According to the website Merriam-Webster.com, the simple definition of impecunious means "having little or no money". Since we've all been in that spot at one time or another, it became a perfect font name. Impecunious JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

I grew up with the ‘Save The Whales’ slogan: I remember watching the news and seeing little Greenpeace dinghies taking on huge Japanese whalers, and activists clinging on for dear life. I haven’t heard that slogan for a while: maybe because whaling is soooo 1890’s, but also maybe because the world has other problems to address. Out of respect for the ‘Save The Whale’ activists, I named this fattish font Whale Song. Whale Song is a robust comic font. It was especially created for book covers, product packaging and posters and, of course, it comes with a whale of diacritics.

PiS Malefiz is inspired by the hand-drawn type on the package of the german 60's version boardgame „Malefiz“, also known as Barricade or Barricata. Extended to five hand-drawn weights PiS Malefiz turned out to be the weird lovechild of Saul Bass and Ralph Steadman, fun and childish plus angry and strange. Just as playing the boardgame, PiS Malefiz is a wild and superfast rollercoaster ride of emotions! Rama Gothic Rounded is an antiqued sans serif designed inspired by 1800s-style wood type. All glyphs had been designed carefully to be retro-looking of the old time and to fill all with nostalgia.
