In 1899, Robert Wiebking (who worked for a number of foundries in his time) designed an all-caps typeface named Engravers Roman (see Engravers #2). American Type Founders, Inc. Originally commissioned in 1979 as a new corporate typeface for Volkswagen AG, the VAG Rounded™ family’s geometric sans letterforms feature distinct rounded terminals, imparting the design with a friendly, approachable demeanor. While helping produce a trade magazine years ago, I admired the hand-lettering of the art director -- a woman named Marydale -- and suggested she let me model a font after her penmanship. She agreed and drew out the alphabet, and I launched an old copy of Fontographer and (to shorten a long story) ended up developing my very first digital typeface. Which has since, astonishingly, become famous worldwide. So now the real Marydale gets the mixed blessing of seeing her handwriting (and name) plastered all over the planet. Patricia Pothin-Roesch's Tendria typeface bases its letterforms on the logo for the French “Tendriade” mark. Clearly inspired by writing and hand lettering, Patricia Pothin-Roesch began her work on Tendria in Adobe Illustrator. After a few letters, she went back to designing the old-fashioned way: drawing by hand on layers of tracing paper. Tendria is a sturdy upright script face with a warm, childlike feeling. Its letters are like the typefaces often used in primary schools; the counterforms are large and open. The name Tendria is reminiscent of the French word for tender, “tendre.” Designers who set Tendria lovingly will reap rewards; this is an excellent addition to a display heading toolkit.

TradaSerif is a new addition to the Trada family. Crisp and clear in appearance, it preserves the same formal spirit and the principal structural elements of TradaSans. TradaSerif offers a wide range of styles, from tenderly thin to thundering black. It also affords excellent text qualities and works brilliantly as a distinctive headline face. Kaaos Pro is based on the logo of the Finnish hardcore band of the same name. It was expanded to include extended Latin, extended Cyrillic and Greek alphabets so it will work with most languages in Europe and the Americas.

Cervo Neue is the new perfected and extended version of Cervo, containing 18 variants. It differs from the previous version with the higher accents over glyphs, enlarged punctuation, old-style numerals and the newly added varieties Semi Bold, Bold, Extra Bold and Black. Additionally, there is the variety of grotesque. Font Cervo is inspired by a “You And Me Monthly” published by National Magazines Publisher RSW „Prasa” that appeared from Mai 1960 till December 1973 in Poland.

Another William H. Page classic, Gothic Dotted, provided the pattern for this bold and brassy typeface. Both versions of this font support the Latin 1262, Central European 1250, Turkish 1254 and Baltic 1257 codepages.

Altra is a family based on a tracing of an old clip art font. I liked the gentle calligraphic look. Consider it a sans serif with style.

Geometric/Technical style logotypes have been developed for car chrome labels since the early 1980’s, but automobile companies don't monopolize the style by any means. During the 80’s and 90’s, a lot of these logos leaned towards the geometric sans styles and the swiss styling of fonts like Handel Gothic, while playing with varying degrees of squared rounds and varying expanded widths per logotype. PT Quadrat Grotesk™ was designed for ParaType in 2001 by Vladimir Pavlikov. An expanded sans serif with square letterforms due to what the face was named. Based on the shapes of one of old Russian wooden types. Wooden types were used for placard display composition at large sizes. Their printouts retained wooden texture and traces of handling. These features are reflected in the shapes of Quadrat Grotesk. It is a good typeface for display and advertising typography.

Last Bastion is a strong, resolute serif typeface. The original inspiration came from the idea of an impenetrable medieval fortress that has stood the test of time and defended generations of hardened soldiers. Large stone towers and fortifications are reflected in the font's bold stems. The sans serif font offers a more modern and clean look, while the Gothic font shows the typeface's darker side. All three fonts include alternates for all letters and numbers in both caps and small caps. Last Bastion lends itself to branding, billboards, signage and industry to name a few. Goudy Sans Bold was originally designed by Fredric Goudy in 1922 as a less formal "gothic" and finished in 1929. The light was designed in 1930 and the Light Italic in 1931. Alternate letterforms are included in these three Goudy designs which are digitized true to their original design. In 2006, designer Colin Kahn drew "LTC Goudy Sans Regular" which is a medium weight version intended for text purposes. Kahn has also designed an experimental "LTC Goudy Sans Hairline" which has a skeletal almost mono-width stroke and results in a surprisingly elegant display face.

In 1903, faced with the welter of sanserif typefaces offered by ATF, Morris Fuller Benton designed News Gothic, which became a 20th-century standard. In 1995 Tobias Frere-Jones studied drawings in the Smithsonian and started a redesign. Cyrus Highsmith reviewed News Gothic, and with the Font Bureau studio expanded it into Benton Sans, a far-reaching new series, with matched weights and widths, offering performance well beyond the limits of the original; FB 1995-2012

Initially inspired by an untitled typeface from an old hand-lettering book, Berber has been extensively developed over two incarnations to function as a very strong and confident sans. The 2011 Berber revisions have enabled Berber to be used across longer settings as well as its more conventional use on larger applications such as signage. Berber was used as the text face for issue 46 of Eye, the graphic design journal. The typeface now features both king caps and small caps. Extensive additions to the numerals sets and complete opentype sets of international diacritics also extend its usage.
