Modern typefaces refer to designs that bear similarities to Bodoni and other Didone faces, which were first created during the late 1700s. Ed Benguiat developed ITC Modern No. 216 in 1982 for the International Typeface Corporation (ITC). Showing a high degree of contrast between thick and thin strokes, as well as a large x-height, this revival is more suited to advertising display purposes than the setting of long running text, or books. Many traits in Benguiat's design are worth further notice. The thick stems of the roman weights have a very stately, solid presence. Their thin serifs have been finely grafted on, a masterful solution to the challenge of bracketing presented by Modernist designs. The italic weights have a very flowing, script-like feel to them, and the letters take the form of true italics, not obliques. The ITC Modern No. 216 family contains the following font styles: Light, Light Italic, Medium, Medium Italic, Bold, Bold Italic, Heavy, and Heavy Italic.

Мир is Mir. The Russian word Мир (Mir) means both World and Peace. The rendezvous of the two terms seems quite unique and utopistic today, but it is comforting to see that it was natural at some time deep down in Russian history. Bits of both meanings were going through my mind while I was designing this typeface. Mir’s character set is multiscript – Latin, Cyrillic and Greek – and extends to many parts of the linguistic world. In fact it covers more than 100 languages. Stylistic consistency between the language systems make typographic border crossings painless even where national borders are still closely guarded. And in regions where mathematics, physics or chemistry are to be expressed, a rich set of OpenType features lets Mir master also these situations. Serious things are best be said in a relaxed, unpretentious way. So Mir doesn’t put on a show. Mir has authority without being authoritarian, it is serious but not stern. It can explain difficult things and stay calm and down to earth at the same time. Mir Medium has another useful feature: It can be freely downloaded and used by anybody anywhere. Let's say a San Francisco punk group used letters from a theatre marquee to create a flyer in 1979 for one of their shows. Then the flyer showed up in the background of a newspaper photograph, and the photo, twenty-five years later, was enlarged and the lettering on the flyer was turned into a font. Santa Mensch has arrived.

In a vintage photograph, promotional signage outside an old theater for the 1929 early sound film “The Doctor’s Secret” had lettering in a wide, bold Art Nouveau slab serif design. This was the model for Talking Picture JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Originally designed for American Type Founders, Goudy drew inspiration from the classical old style faces for Goudy Old Style. Round characters have a strong diagonal stress, ascenders are fairly long but descenders are very short. Goudy bold was introduced in 1920; this was designed by Morris Fuller Benton. This typeface has been particularly popular in America where it is extensively used in advertising, book jackets, for labels and packaging.

Another addition to the Whiz-Bang Woodtype series, this offering is patterned after a typeface issued by the old Boston firm of Baker & Greele in 1826. Named after a small town in Texas just a hop, skip and a jump from the Red River and Arkansas. Both versions of this font include the complete Latin 1252 and CE 1250 character sets, with localization for Romanian and Moldovan.

Futura is one of the best known and most widely used of modern typefaces. Designed by Paul Renner between 1924-1927 for the Bauersche Giesserei, it remains today one of the most successful typefaces due to its simplicity of features, perfect legibility, and meticulous finish of each of its letters. Its great variety of styles and weights makes Futura particularly fit for distinguished user interfaces, information displays, smart watches, e-readers, television apps, technical appliances, and internet-related uses. As recently as forty years ago, computers consisted of racks of vacuum tubes, each rack about the size of a refrigerator, with enough racks to fill a good-sized family room required to do routine data processing. This font is based on a monospaced typeface used on a lineprinter from that time, the Unisys 0776. Although its origins are strictly retro, the face retains a timeless techno edge, even today. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

Brush Script is a lively font with brush-written characteristics, designed by Robert E. Smith in 1942 for American Type Founders. Brush Script continues to be a favorite, despite competition from other similar typefaces of the period and more modern looking scripts digitized in recent years. Perhaps that's because Brush Script is peppy, informal, and unabashedly confident. The letterforms are casual, yet look as if they have been written quickly. Today, Brush Script is used for advertisements and sales materials, especially for luxury and consumer products.

Quarion is a clean, neo-humanist sans with a contemporary geometric approach. Its design started as an exploration of geometric fonts from the early 20th century, like Futura, Neuzeit Grotesk or Recta which allows the typeface to generate an inviting but sophisticated feel on the page. Although, less contrasting, geometric designs have been quite popular around type designers until today, Quarion finds its niche by combining circular elements with a medium stroke contrast, resulting in a versatile and robust workhorse for any analog or digital application.
