19th Century Retro is a re-design of an official German font style (called ‘Fraktur’) which was used in official documents in the 19th and early 20th century. There is an alternative small letter ‘s’ which you generate by typing the @ sign. This alternative letter was the original small letter s which was printed in the middle and at the beginning of a word originally (for example in the words ‘slightly’ and ‘best’). However, if the s was at the end, the normal small letter s was used (for example in the words ‘it's’ and ‘columns’). For readability reasons I decided to put the normal small letter s onto the s-key on your keyboard.

Relato has a low contrast and “a muscular” structure that makes it useful for setting longer text. In display sizes it has a variety of details that lends it a unique and personal expression. The formal principle of the serif, the variety of terminal strokes and the combination of curves and semi-straight lines gives the Relato a more “human” flavor. The inspiration for the design comes from different traditional calligraphic styles. Grava is Neil Summerour’s injection of warmth within the geometric sans font category. Historically, geometric sans families have been based on primal shapes — triangle, circle, square — and the more closely they held to those rigid rules, the more internal inconsistencies they showed. Angles won’t match up correctly, letters will lean, overshoots complicate clean typesetting, and idealized circles become grotesque and unwieldy in some weights. Because of issues like these, geometric sans fonts have a reputation of being cold, austere, even a bit “off”.
