I'm happy to present you my new Romanesque font from the Codex Gigas. The manuscript was created in the early 13th century in the Benedictine monastery of Podlažice in Bohemia. The codex was written in a handwriting atypical for the 13th century, which is actually a late version of the Carolingian minuscule. Texts about repentance and exorcism were written in large Majuscule (Square Capitals (Imperial Roman capitals written with a brush)). Majuscules first incised in stone more than two millennia ago, married to minuscule letterforms that evolved from manuscript hands of the eighth and ninth centuries. Majuscule font is the name given to a type of decorative upper-case letters used in inscriptions and, typically, at the start of a section of text in medieval manuscripts. They are characterized by their straight forms unlike rounded in Lombardic capitals with thick, curved stems. Majuscule capitals were also used to write words or entire phrases. The text is divided into words, punctuation marks are used consistently – periods indicate the end of a sentence and the middle of a phrase. Cloudbuster is K-Type’s take on the mid twentieth century style of extra condensed slabs/moderns inspired by Imre Reiner’s Corvinus Skyline of 1934. Unusually, Cloudbuster has a printed-look softness, courtesy of very slightly rounded corners throughout, so it looks a little less harsh than similar typefaces. The font is an imposing display face with elegant, unfussy letterforms and a generous x-height.

Wittenbach is based on lettering by Rudolf Koch which really embodies the essence of classic gothic-style poster lettering of the 1920s. Nova Caere is a typical urban calligraphy, gestural with its fast lines, with short and slightly noticeable ascender and descender traits. Condensed lower case and rounded capital letters are quite similar in height. Nova Caere has been studied for alternating upper and lower case inside the words of the text, so as to reinforce their expressive content. Stylistic variations that combine particular couples of letters have been developed, as well as some descender traits have been highlighted that can be employed to characterize words and phrases.

Shelf Numbers JNL recreates the small plastic pricing tags that were used on grocery, drug, variety and liquor stores shelves for many years. The number keys have alternates in the shift position with a cent sign alongside the numbers. Also included are various phrases such as "for", "each", "lb." in the A-L/a-l keystrokes, and there is an additional set of numbers in the M-V/m-v keystrokes with a decimal point to the right of each numeral for dollar amounts.

Inspired by a set of vintage alphabet game tile pieces, Newark JNL has similar traits to other slab serif Romans, but enough 'quirky' letter widths to break the rules and have it stand out on its own merits. The name derives from font work files in progress, often saved as 'new work' until a fitting name is decided upon. It seemed only right that this phrase be turned around into a font name itself. Newark JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Among the many display faces Milton Glaser designed during the heyday of Push Pins Studios was the pattern for this dramatically shadowed face, whose original name—for reasons unexplained—was "Kitchen." Well, whatever the reason, it's definitely "what's cooking," so the Italian word for the latter half of that phrase gives this typeface its name. Equally at home being kookie or spookie. Both versions include the complete Unicode Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1254 character sets, with localization for Moldovan and Romanian.

The typefaces Largo Mager (Light) and Largo Halbfett (Medium) were cast for the first time in 1937 by Ludwig & Mayer based on the designs by Hans Wagner. One weight Largo Licht (Outline) was added in 1956. All fonts were only configured with capitals. The digital version of Largo has pointed serifs and not the slightly rounded ones seen in the hot metal versions which gives the typeface a more elegant note. Largo is often used for fine printing jobs as business cards or formal invitations, or in the fashion and cosmetics fields. Hans Wagner was born in Munich in 1894 and died in 1977 in Altenburg where he had worked as a painter, graphic designer and book designer. In addition to the Largo typeface, he developed, among others, the Altenburger Gotisch (1928), the Welt-Antiqua (1931-1934) and the Wolfram (1930).

A feminine, graceful script whose thicker horizontals create a wave-like rhythm — hence the name. Seashore is loosely based on an "eccentric" (left-leaning) penmanship style of the late 19th century. Used mainly by professional "engrossers" in certificates and tributes, or by society ladies in their stationery and invitations, it sent a message of true refinement, as the style would have been only been mastered after the more common business, Spencerian, and standard ornamental styles. In fact, unusual script styles were in such demand that type foundries of the era exploded with metal-type knockoffs of increasing fanciness. Seashore includes a wide variety of swash capitals, alternate endings, and contextual ligatures, over 900 glyphs in all. Seashore is best used in short display settings — in names and addresses on formal invitations, in menus and food packaging, or fashion and beauty contexts.

Porkshop is a font of retro vintage flavor with a hefty dose of immigrant-influenced naive typography. It's fundamentally inspired by an old-but-still-prominent "Pork Shop" sign in Manhattan. I like to think that this font was made by a signmaker's apprentice who didn't yet have a grasp on the subtleties of elegant letterforms, but put his gusto into perfectly sharp serifs. While pointy little serifs are cool, the real shine of this font comes from the imaginative combination of uppercase and lowercase shapes. This unique mixture in the lowercase reminds me of an indeterminate European accent in the big city. Big and strong and easy to understand. Best rendered in 3-foot tall metal type, Porkshop works well in print and on screens, too. The Bolds and Italics are brand new in 2011.

Kevin Simpson was five years old when the stylized "E" of the Electrolux vacuum cleaner logo caught his eye. This is his earliest recollection of an interest that ultimately became an obsession. Type remains his major preoccupation, and he admits to attempting to work a good typeface design into any project where he can get away with it. Aitos was inspired by a metal sculpture Simpson saw while driving through the French countryside. "The statue was very strong. It was heavily weathered and had obviously been there for some time, yet it also seemed very delicate and light." Aitos, like the statue, is a rugged design. At first glance, it is chunky and bold, perhaps a little jarring. If you look again, however, you'll see it has refined qualities. Aitos commands attention - yet is still affable.

Dante was designed by Giovanni Mardersteig. Mardersteig started work on Dante after the Second World War when printing at the Officina Bodoni returned to full production. He drew on his experience of using Monotype Bembo and Centaur to design a new book face with an italic which worked harmoniously with the roman. Originally hand-cut by Charles Malin, Dante was adapted for mechanical composition by Monotype in 1957. The new digital font version has been re drawn, by Monotype's Ron Carpenter, free from any restrictions imposed by hot metal technology. The Dante font family was issued in 1993 in a range of three weights with a set of titling capitals. Recreate authentic letterpress typography with Oxford Press, a set of chunky uppercase Serif & Sans fonts designed using real vintage metal letterpress blocks sourced from old printing companies. The Serif & Sans fonts each have two variations, 'Clean' and 'Rough'—with the latter having real, highly detailed hand-made letterpress textures applied to each letter.
