In a specimen book from Stevens, Shanks & Sons, Ltd. of London (circa1930s) “Royal Gothic” was their version of a classic grotesk sans that had been in use as far back as 1899 when the Keystone Foundry called it “Charter Oak”. The terms "gothic" and "grotesk" were equally applied to early sans serif typefaces – at first not well embraced by printers as being too ugly (grotesque) for use. One familiar characteristic of early grotesk fonts (such as this one) is the numerous variations of character widths and shapes. By combining those two terms into a font name, the digital version of this design is called Gothic Grotesk JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

German type designer Erik Spiekermann created this sans FontFont between 1997 and 2002. New for 2020 Bodoni Ornamental now has two italics to choose from, one basic italic and a second which is more of a true italic with a few uppercase letters that have been stylized. Only one italic can be style linked to the regular upright version so in the second italic we've added Avanti to the name which means forward in Italian. When purchasing the regular upright and Avanti italic together they will install as two separate families. Bodoni Ornamental is a revival of a very old typeface based on the Poster Bodoni letter shape. Giambattista Bodoni passed away in 1813, this decorative version was created in the 1820’s or 1830’s which was the time period when many of these ultra bold decorated type faces began to appear, the original artist is currently unknown. The original version of this ornate classic was only available as a set of uppercase letters, today over one hundred eighty years later this font is now complete with a new lowercase, numbers and accented characters for Eastern, Central and Western European countries. Due to the ornate detail in Bodoni Ornamental when printing itís recommended to use a laser printer 600dpi or greater, a 1200dpi printer will give you the best results rendering the most detail at the smallest possible point size for this font. Small home user Ink Jet printers are not recommended for Bodoni Ornamental unless you set the font to a very large point size. With Ink Jet printers much of the detail in the letters will bleed together as the ink hits the page, commercial Ink Jet printers such as GiclÈe printers may give good results. When using Bodoni Ornamental for digital images including web site graphics it may help to add a one pixel stroke fill around the letters setting color to white or grey, this may help the web site images display better on some computer's. You will need a photo editing application such as Adobe Photoshop to create your image adding the stroke fill and save as a jpg , png or gif file. I hope you enjoy this old font as much as I did making it. Note: When previewing the Bodoni Ornamental font in the Windows font preview you may notice some letters appearing lighter and some darker, this is a problem with the preview window and some ornate fonts, Bodoni Ornamental will print normal and not with mixed light and dark letters.

Socialite JNL takes its cue from the Art Deco style of the 1930s with its clean, angular lines and stylized letter shapes.

Trapper is so named because it exploits a typographic design mechanism known as ink traps purely for graphic effect. Ink traps are a device used by type designers to create significantly higher legibility under adverse printing conditions, especially when the intended use of the type is to be printed at small sizes on mediocre substrate. For Trapper the ink trap is overused for exaggerated visual effect. This gives the Round version a playful twisted balloons look while the Sharp has a stern mechanical default effect. Trapper is a versatile font family of 8 fonts -- Sharp and Round variations in regular and bold weights each with an accompanying oblique.

This font set, created for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, celebrates the work of influential French artist Paul Cézanne. Linotype CoolWool is part of the Take Type Library, featuring winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. This font was designed by A. Leonardi and P. Wollein, who took their inspiration from clothing labels and care instructions. CoolWool is designed to look like it was stitched, a style of typeface which goes back to the hand embroidery of the time of Biedermeier. CoolWool, however, is a distinctly modern font with a technical feel. The font is not suited for longer texts, but CoolWool is good for shorter texts and headlines, especially because of the possibilities allowed by its three different styles, regular, stone washed (bold) and Cotton Club (outline).

I don’t live in the mountains, so when we go on holiday and visit the mountains, we always like to hear the echo! A bit childish, I know, but that’s how it is. Background Echo is a very nice, handmade, all caps font. It’s not exactly a laser-cut design; glyphs are a bit uneven, wobbly in places and have their own idea of what they should look like. That, my dear potential customers, is the charm of a hand made font! Wellingborough is a family of six late-Victorian inspired faces, principally for display work and headings but also including a text form suitable for use in ‘feature’ paragraphs and short documents. The regular, small capitals and italic forms provides good clear headings, with a modicum of individualism and flair about them, while the Flourish and capital faces carry the family to rather more elaborate-yet still readily legible- heights. The italic form also works well alone to suggest a sense of flow and movement. The whole family is ideally suited for poster and advertising work, as well as book and record covers and period themed signage.

Irena is a cubist/expressionist font inspired by Vojtěch Preissig. Preissig (1873-1944) was a Czech typographer, printmaker, illustrator and teacher, whose work was influenced by Japanese Art and Symbolism. During WWII, Preissig supported the Czech resistance and he was arrested in 1940. He died on June 11th in Dachau concentration camp. This font was named after his daughter Irena Bernášková. The Irena font is angular and square(ish), yet easy to read. It comes with extensive language support.

Minnak, as a whole geometric display type is our take on Square Kufic (Makili) style Latin script fonts, comes in eleven weights with linear progression. It is an Uniwidth typeface at the core. From Hairline to Black, all multiplexed weights take up the same space in width and can be used interchangeably. Supports wide range of Open Type features, with many stylistic alternates in 12 context. Minnak is also have a close relation with pixel fonts, because in spite of its based on Makili forms, it all started as a pixel font in the drawing stage before further steps came into play. The key difference between Minnak and Makili style is that the latter must have the exact square counters with no diagonal strokes, and any other components of a letterform must conform to be proportional. Such style-specific requirements determine the overall dimensions of the glyphs and therefore, there can be only minor differences between the typefaces. In Minnak, counters are rectangular because of its narrow and condensed proportions, but the Makili form influence is still manifest. This impression is best confirmed with Medium weight where negative spaces and stem thickness are equal. Contrast and virtually no optical correction were presented, as characteristic of its genre had to have equal horizontal and vertical line thicknesses. As per the minimal and authentic look of the type, all glyphs are drawn as straight or only as 45-degree diagonal strokes. The representation of the ‘diagonalless’ approach is preserved by stylistic alternatives, making its similarity in visual aesthetics clearly visible. Marks and punctuation is another feature that doesn’t follow the strict rules of the origin style. Although not a pixel font, all building parts of the glyphs in Minnak share the same unit precision as they are designed with pixel equivalents in mind. Even space characters are designed to match glyph widths, meeting the demands of certain typesetting or multi-line lettering compositions. With its Pseudo Ancient and Runic alternates, extention parts and ornaments included in all weights, Minnak is suitable for branding, logo and monogram designs, the screen titles and headlines, packaging, posters, book covers and more, where it shines at big sizes. Its pixel font-like appearance makes it a significant choice for the modern compositions. Thanks to mostly uniform width design, it is possible to use Minnak also as a system for lettering. This feature can be used as vertical fitting of the letters between the lines. As a casual expression in Turkish, “Minnak” is one of the seven typeface designs in Esintype's ancient scripts of Anatolia project, Tituli Anatolian series — representing Seljuk period in the medieval Anatolia and their tradition of architectural stone ornamentation.

Journal Sans Old School is a new, modernized digital version of the widely popular Journal Sans. The new typeface preserves the character of the geometric sans from the famous “Science and Life” magazine of the 1960s. The weight of the basic styles corresponds to the Journal Sans regular and bold from the Soviet linotype catalogs. Also, the original vertical proportions and character forms match the original. Cyrillic Alternates, Greek language support expand the range of font’s usage. Journal Sans Old School was designed by Natalia Vasilyeva and released by Paratype in 2019.

The hand lettered credits from the 1942 British film comedy “The Goose Steps Out” became the model for Goose Creek JNL, a simple sans serif design available in both regular and oblique versions. According to the Internet Movie Database (imdb), “A bumbling teacher turns out to be the double of a German general. He is flown into Germany to impersonate the general and cause chaos and hilarity in a Hitler Youth college.” The title is a parody of the “goosestep” style of marching by German soldiers during World War II. As a variant on the movie’s title, the font was named for Goose Creek, South Carolina – a charming community just northeast of historic Charleston.
