The design of the Jeunesse font family derives from a study of primers which the designer undertook earlier in his career. Jeunesse was designed with the intention of combining excellent legibility and character recognition with the ability to create compact, distinctive words and lines while maintaining basic flourishless letterforms. The sans serif style is pre-dominant in this design, but serifs or rather parts have been added where necessary, mostly at the top left hand parts of the characters, to aid readability. Use Jeunesse as a text and display face. There are also fully sans serif and slab serif versions available which can be used on their own or mixed with each other and the parent fonts.

We think of Cherritt as a 'bullnosed' serif face, because of its rounded off serifs. What that phrase may not convey is the friendly, approachable nature of this large family of faces. Wacca straddles the categories of Humanist slab and Contemporary serif, and it also gives a handwriting taste especially in the italics. This serif typeface was designed to be simple and neutral on text sizes, there descender proportions are short and the x-height is large. The lowercase italics contain different structure from roman characters, but the most differentiation detail is the fact the ascender and descender strokes don’t contain serifs. Italics characters are slightly more narrow and condensed than roman letterforms.

Saracen is the Latin (wedge serif) member of The Proteus Project, a collection of four interchangeable type families designed in different nineteenth century styles. The Saracen typeface was designed by Jonathan Hoefler in 1992. Saracen is a design in the ‘latin’ style, characterized by wedge-shaped serifs, a genus of type that emerged in the mid-nineteenth century. A part of The Proteus Project, the typographic theme-and-variations based on related Regency styles, Saracen was created for Rolling Stone, in whose pages the typeface first appeared in 1993 . From the desk of the designer: Though the wedge serif printing type is a nineteenth century innovation, Saracen does not resemble any font from this era. It’s mysterious that typefounders of the Victorian age who sought the extreme and fanciful in their work — exploring all manner of serif treatments, and creating extra-condensed and super-expanded designs — never made a latin font of this straightforward proportion. <

One of the type examples found within the pages of “Lettering” by Harry B. Wright (1950) is a bold hand lettered serif typeface with a unique twist – the slab serifs had rounded corners, looking very much like show card lettering of the early 1900s. This design is now available digitally as Maybrook JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Roncial is an Ultra Bold font with a hint of serif. This is one of the fonts originally designed before the advent of digital and started out being a bolder, slightly serifed version of Folio Extra Bold which was one of the boldest fonts at the time (old metal set). Folkwang is an unusual roman type with a lowercase that resembles an upright italic. Unusual top serifs are contrasted by almost no foot serifs. Originally released by the Klingspor foundry in 1955, this face originated from Hermann Schardt while he was the director of the Folkwang Werkkunstschule in Essen Germany circa 1949. According to British book designer and printing historian John Dreyfus in the 1955 Penrose Annual: Folkwang “…is a lovingly made piece of work which could have easily have been little more than an act of awe-struck reverence for the calligraphic techniques rediscovered by Edward Johnston and spread abroad in Germany by Anna Simons. Of special interest is the serif treatment of the lower-case letters: at the feet the terminals are mostly left bare, but the ascenders and the cross-strokes of the f and t are given elaborate curving serifs which in the mass create an effect unusual in a page of letters made as movable types, resembling rather more a piece of intaglio engraving. The ligatures ch and ck are original and successful.”

I first wanted to call this family Crowbone, after Olaf Tryggvason, the legendary Viking king from Norway. Somehow I changed my mind and went for Crowfeather, because this is not a Viking font and the name ‘felt’ better. Crowfeather is a family of two distinct fonts: a classic Serif and an old school script font. They work really well together!

Junior Clerk JNL is the plain sans serif version of the lettering found on the cover of the sheet music for 1919's "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise". Mantika Book expands the Mantika super family: a contemporary serif font with a soft, yet robust character and a classic lookMantika Book, an Antiqua, is the third member of the Mantika super family, which consists of the Mantika Sans and Mantika Informal. Designer Jürgen Weltin has gone back to the roots of his font, which he had originally derived from a Renaissance Antiqua. These origins are recognizable in the first member of the Mantika family, Mantika Sans, in the form of carefully suggested line use and a contrast in the weights that recalls the Antiqua. This solid sans serif, optimized for use in text, also has a particularly energetic and dynamically designed italic. Mantika Informal also brings to mind a cursive font at first glance; ultimately, however, it is not easily categorized. Its light, organic shapes combine the informally flowing style of cursive handwriting with the open and airy form and contrast of a humanist sans serif. The shapes in the serif Mantika Book are also based on the Renaissance Antiqua, just like the other members of the Mantika super family. However, the contrast in the weights is somewhat stronger than is conventional for this genre, and the serifs are characteristically asymmetrical, with slanted ends. Lightly grooved stems with an implied curvature in the lower-case letters as well as dots whose shape flirts with a fountain pen lend the Mantika Book a dynamic and particularly friendly character. Details like the open "g" or the contoured foot of the "k" emphasize this dynamism. The letters of Mantika Book have the same large x-height as the other members of the super family, but are equipped with somewhat longer ascenders and descenders.
