The Catalpa font family is José Scaglione and Veronika Burian’s wood type inspired design for an overwhelming headline presence. It has no regular weights, only four slender and four hulking weights. French Typewriter is a slab serif typeface created in 2019 by Jean-Renaud Cuaz. It takes roots in the typewriting font styles with a French flair. In the history of this font style, early typewriters were initially thought to be replacements for printing and so featured proportional fonts, before being replaced by monospaced typefaces. French Typewriter was created with proportional design, departing from the constraint of identical width and space. Designed for vintage and modern use with a script influenced italic, French Typewriter provides a large range of weights from Extra Light to Black with matching italics offering a large palette of styles for both vintage and modern design. The Azbuka™ typeface family has its roots in a fairly pedestrian source. “The idea came in part from an old sign in London that read ‘SPRINKLER STOP VALVE’,” says Dave Farey, designer of the typeface. Like all good sign spotters, Farey took a photograph of the sign and filed it away for possible use in a lettering or typeface design project. In Prague a number of years later, the street signs reminded Farey of the London signage - and his camera came out again. Comparing the two back in his studio, he realized that the signs from London and Prague were not as similar as he initially thought. However, they were enough alike to serve as the foundation for a no-frills, 21st century sans serif typeface family. “I wanted to draw a wide range of weights, italic and condensed designs all in one go,” recalls Farey, “rather than add on to the family later.” His goal was to create a family that could be used for text and display copy, with sufficient weights to provide a broad typographic palette. Indeed, the completed design, created in collaboration with fellow type designer Richard Dawson, consists of twenty typefaces in eight weights ranging from extra light to extra black. The five mid-range designs have complementary italics. Seven condensed designs round out the family. Azbuka’s lighter weights perform remarkably well in blocks of text composition. “They’re clean and legible - and perhaps a little boring,” says Farey, “but they are perfect for copy with a down-to-earth, yet contemporary flavor.” The heavier weights are equally well suited for a variety of display uses. The designs are authoritative but not overbearing and will readily make a strong statement without calling attention to themselves. The condensed weights of Azbuka are ideal for those instances where you have a lot to say - and not much room to say it. The name Azbuka? Fulgora is a sort of ‘calligraphic typography’ or ‘typographic calligraphy’, depending on the point of view. Inspired by late-medieval Bâtarde and Civilité blackletter styles, the Kannada and Sinhala writing systems from Southern India, Celtic uncials, and diverse vernacular Mexican scripts, Fulgora was created straight from pen on paper as a personal calligraphic style where fantasy in the chief ingredient. The idea to take it to the digital realm came later, as an extension of the creative process. To this end, originals for each character were made, directly traced with the nib with no retouching, then vectorized to be digitally assembled. Work has been done on spacing and kerning with the aim to digitally reproduce an utterly calligraphic outcome keeping the natural, imperfect, manual finish of all signs. Fulgora has two variants: Blanca (white) and Negra (black), executed with different nib widths but the same style and proportions.

We have transformed the “99 names of ALLAH” into a font. That means each key on your keyboard represents 1 of the 99 names of ALLAH Aaza Wajal. The fonts work with both the English and Arabic Keyboards. We call this Calligraphy "Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala" because we have added "Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala" to each and every name. The first "Alef" has a "hamzit wasel", this indicates that the name can be pronounced both as "AR-RAHMAAN" or "R-RAHMAN" (in the zip file you will find a pdf file explaining the differences in the "harakat", pronunciation and spelling according to the Holy Quran). PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: Price Didone has inspired a full alphabetic font - Mastadoni, so if you're after more than numerals, head over there! Price Didone is a font with a singular purpose: The setting of elegant, stylish price tags. As such it is non-alphabetic, featuring instead numerals, a large array of currency symbols, and a smattering of typographic niceties such as quotes, brackets, pilcrow, daggers and a very curvaceous ampersand. Certain currency symbols that are not independent glyphs (Q, Ft, kr etc.) are included as their constituent letters, some of which also have automatic ligatures for that little something extra. There are currency symbols included which have not (yet) been accepted to unicode, such as the Russian Ruble and Bitcoin symbols. For ease of access, these can be typed using the standard ligatures feature. See features below for the full list. Charlemagne, one of the great rulers of the Middle Ages, was instrumental in the reestablishment of formal education in the West. This font was inspired by the notion that he felt the need to protect his communications from people with the ability to read; a rare skill then. Did he really command such a script to exist? He did instigate the development Carolingian minuscule script. Here are two different systems that are both attributed to him. Does it provide any real security? No, but it is fun to think about how such a system might have been used.

It was originally inspired by my winter scarf knitting exploits. I discovered that making wool scarves was generating beautiful patterns and I wanted them to become a source of inspiration for a style. I made a few collages, and they became letters. Other characters came up with ease. It is readable, but long essays are not its main purpose. It is decorative and will look casual and very attractive on any ad as a title or a short phrase. It also demonstrates very good performance in automatic 3D generators, like Xara 3D maker, used in making examples of how this font can be utilised. It was designed to be thin, soft, with the capacity to cover empty space and to create a vibrant environment. Small characters are different from capital letters, they are stylistic alternates. Some letters are slightly ominous or dynamic, others create a soothing feeling. Using several colors make it shine, but it is complex, it looks good in monochromatic compositions as well.

The classic modernist FS Alvar grew out of a library of pure modular shapes gathered by Fontsmith’s master of the abstract starting point, Mr Phil Garnham. “It was a collection that just had to be explored and brought to life in a typographic voice. “We debated long and hard about this. It was big decision to make a shift away from the typefaces that people knew us for. And we didn’t want to compromise our reputation of well crafted typographic quality”. Modular forms A headline font that’s both graphic and functional, in the modernist tradition, FS Alvar focused Fontsmith’s eyes on the bigger issue of what makes a font show its age. “Looking at those fonts from the 1980s that were supposed to represent the ‘future’,” says Phil, “they looked so dated now. With Alvar, we weren’t concerned with creating future-thinking typography but with exploring form for form’s sake, and how that can evolve to create letterforms. Modular forms with a typographic eye.” Stencilled The concept for Alvar first materialised back in 2001 with some sketches Phil made while still at Middlesex University. Eight years later, something made him dig them out again. “There was something really nice about the proportions of that first design. Working on it again, I thought about it properly, but it still needed something to give it that edge. “Jason stood up in the studio and supplied the missing link: ‘Why don’t we make it stencilled?’ He didn’t mean in an obvious way, but by building a kind of architectural stencil into the form. It worked and the idea of using an architect’s name (Alvar Aalto) to describe the font felt perfect.” Featured in... I made Cut Along by stealing some red cardboard from my kids (red, because they didn’t have any black…) and cutting out the glyphs one by one with a pair of scissors. I then pasted the shapes onto white paper, scanned them and turned them into a font. Cut Along is a very nice font for ads, book covers, packaging and children’s books. Enjoy!

Trapped home during the Coronavirus outburst of March 2020 the Zetafonts team found some solace from the world-wide anxiety by designing letters for the #36daysoftype challenge. To fight dark thoughts and spread some good karma we decided to add a free font twist, selecting the best glyphs drawn to develop a collection of ten free typefaces for download. We did our best to make this little gift to the community valuable, though developed in record time: although playful and excessive, these typefaces all stem from our current research in contemporary trends and historical design solutions, bridging calligraphy and design. The typefaces have been published daily starting Monday, March 30. You can download and use the typefaces in any way you desire, as they are totally free for commercial and non-commercial use. Casual Face is a display variable font with a natural handwritten feeling. The font supports Latin and Cyrillic uppercase characters, numerals, and the main set of punctuation and symbols. The character of the font is based on the classic sign-painter casual script. The font’s option variability is upright and slanted letters up to 17 degrees. This enables the designer to define the gradient himself and be free to create designs suitable for advertising, packaging, and events. The font is perfect for headlines and personal products with casual characters and the mood conveyed is warm, and relaxed.

In the early days of printing it was soon recognized that there was a need to identify the printer and publisher behind the printed work. So these industrious people created marks to identify themselves to clients. This font contains over 160 marks dating back to the early years of printing with the likes of Fust, Ratdolt, Manutius, Caxton, and a whole host of others represented. Some of these printers were very influential and altered the course of history, some merely enabled the broader public to access the classics. Some were imprisoned and others helped foment revolutions. But all were riding the new current of this technology of moveable type that helped transform our world through the enabling of easily exchanging information.

Linotype Startec, from Jan Tomás, is part of the TakeType Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contest 1999 for inclusion on the TakeType 3 CD. This is another fun font from Tomás, who also designed Alphabat, and the two share some characteristics. Linotype Startec is an outline font whose unique forms are reminiscent of futuristic dreams and space adventures. It should be used in point sizes of at least 18, but the phrase 'the bigger the better' fits this font well. The careful details and figures of the alphabet turn into UFOs and space ships from another world when set in very large point sizes. Linotype Startc is best for very short texts and headlines.

The German poet, painter, calligrapher and type designer Emil Rudolf Weiß originally created this eponymous typeface for the Bauer Foundry of Frankfurt. Long known and loved by metal type enthusiasts under the name "Weiss Antiqua," this design was inspired by typefaces from the Italian Renaissance while still distinctly reflecting the artistic and poetic personality of its twentieth-century designer. Weiss has tall ascenders, sharp apex points, and a low-slung midsection on the caps. The italic moves like a classical ballerina. Weiss is one of the earliest contemporary serif types to have italics based on the chancery style of writing. The Weiss family works well for warmly legible text typography; and it's also an original choice for refined headline and display graphics."

The main idea behind creating Monly typeface was to combine playfulness with a strong letter construction backbone, so all the letters would stand tall and firm, but not to lose the playfulness. Like people, who grow up but try to save their inner child. By doing so and combining all this, the typeface achieves a great readability and appealing look. Monly font suits best for logos, headlines and small text blocks, but can also be used for big text blocks if the style suits the purpose.
