Five well-known examples in the field of architecture serve to illustrate the range of diversity in Art Nouveau: Saarinen’s Helsinki Railroad Station, Hoffman’s Palais Stocklet in Brussels, Lechner’s Museum of Applied Arts on Budapest, Mackintosh’s Glasgow School of Art and Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. Only the last fits comfortably within the common perception of Art Nouveau. Whereas Gaudi would avoid the straight line as much as possible, Macintosh seemed to employ it as much as possible. The uniting factor is that they all represent “new art” -- an attempt to look things differently than the previous generation. Even when they draw on the past -- e.g. Lechner in the use of traditional Hungarian folk art -- the totality of the expression in new. Das Grotesk was inspired by earlier nineteenth-century grotesques, but it is much more related to American gothic designs such as those by M.F. Benton. Due to their pure geometric structure, most grotesque typefaces tend to have a rather monotonous and lifeless appearance, thus failing to express the ideals of the modern creed. Das Grotesk on the other hand is a lively design with several distinguishable characteristics which attract attention when set at large sizes, whilst they become subtle and blend evenly at small sizes, fostering a neutral identity. This is a very legible and space-saving typeface with a narrow structure. It was designed with slanted curved ends and sheared terminals applied on several straight strokes. It has two-storey ‘a’ and ‘g’ but includes single-storey alternates. The family consists of 14 weights ranging from Extra Thin to Black (including true-italics). It provides simultaneous support for Latin, Cyrillic and Greek and is loaded with several advanced typographic features such as small caps. Initially commissioned in the summer of 2009 for a popular North American ice cream parlor chain we cannot name, Tuba started with a reconceptualization of a somewhat flawed '72 alphabet idea by Swiss graphic designer Erwin Poell. During the back-and-forth of the custom project, other ideas seeped into the design, mostly from other Canada Type fonts, like Fab, Jonah, Jojo and Teaspoon. The end result was what the client called a "sugar circuit trigger alphabet". This now is the retail version of that project. Tuba's main style is a straight-forward mix of 60s/70s art nouveau ideas and late-70s/early-80s tube aesthetic. The Highlight and Outline styles are almost necessary spinoffs for this kind of typeface. And the all-caps Black style is a nod to the fat font fad of the past couple of years. All styles contain many alternates – so many that each style is almost two fonts in one. Make sure to check out the character sets for a few nice and useful surprises. Life's too short. Chilada is an outrageous display family by designer Patricia Lillie for Image Club. Across four versions, the decorate treatment inside Chilada's letters becomes more intense. Chilada characters exude an energy of their own. Their design could be described as a cross between Bank Gothic and Neuland, with a spoonful of funk mixed in. Big and chunky, Chilada's forms are made up of straight lines only. There are no curved elements. The resulting design is angular and cuts a good figure on the page. Of the Chilada family's four members, the basic font is named Chilada Uno. Uno is Spanish for one!" The forms of Chilada Uno's letter are solid black-or whatever color you choose to set them in! Chilada Dos, Tres, and Quatro each offer their own decorative treatments: Chilada Dos's letters sport a zigzag inline, Chilada Tres is decorated or an ornamented leaving leaves more black from the letters than white, while Chilada Quatro's level of decoration is just crazy. Its letters are made up more more from white space than from black marks. Chilada Quatro is almost an outline font!"

Guaruja Grotesk is the first Tipogra Fio family for headlines & body copy. The grotesque form factor is much inspired in the Modernism movement from the mid of 20th Century but the Italic weight is a great cursive contrast aside the Roman ones so you can make very brutalist layouts or craft humanist projects, without losing the communication between all the family. Do not be afraid to type words with uppercase I and lowercase L because this last one has its own personality so do others glyphs like Italic lowercase G, Y and K and the straight corners in the Roman uppercase A, K, V, W, X, Y and Z. The same curves and corners are transferred to the numbers, symbols and so on. If your text is in a latin alphabet even though has lots of diacritcs, Guaruja may get it done! If you’re making a mathematical equation, it also can make it. If there’s a signaling project with lots of destinations, trust the arrows to help with together with the whole family.

The Greek font started from an experiment with designing fonts based on a geometric grid. I joined the points on the grid with straight lines to form the various characters and found that this resulted in a font that closely resembled Greek writing (derived from inscriptions carved in stone) of ancient times. I continued to develop this theme but I now accentuated the look and feel of Greek writing. The three styles shown are the results of this development. I did not kern or letterspace the individual letters since this would have been out of character with the orignal Greek writing. This means that the font is mono-spaced. At a later stage I may produce more refined and "modern" versions of these fonts. Surprisingly, the Greek SCF styles are very readable. The font is fully professional in terms of its character set. It contains over 235 characters - (upper and lower case characters, punctuation, numerals, symbols and accented characters are present). In fact, it has all the accented characters used in the major European languages.
