Interlude originated with some title lettering which we found in an Austrian theatre program from the early 1900s. With some more research we found a similar style called Tradition which was designed by Bernard Naudin and produced by a Parisian type house during the period before World War I. Using those two sources we ultimately produced two variant versions of the font, combining elements of the two sources. Interlude features characters with open areas in the heavier strokes, while Prelude is a solid, more script-like version of the style.

The design idea for this condensed sans serif stencil font was inspired by a post-World War II brass stencil spotted in an online auction. The United States was assisting Europe with much-needed goods, and the text in the middle of a “stars and stripes” shield used for marking the shipping containers read “For European Recovery supplied by the United States of America”. It was the first line (“For European Recovery”) that became the working model for Supplier Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Sir Richard Henry Bonnycastle (1791–1847) was an English officer and military engineer who served in the War of 1812 and ultimately settled in Canada. I stumbled upon copies of some of his charts and maps, became infatuated with the hand-lettered titles—and the result is the eponymous Bonnycastle. The font has a bold weight and an italic style but is intended as an eye-catching standalone, evocative of its period in history. Use as a titling face on branding materials, event posters, book covers, presentation graphics, historical illustrations, and the like.

The chestnut ("castanea") is one of my favorite trees. I used to collect the chestnuts and made chestnut-figurines out of them, using bamboo sate skewers. Castanea font is a calligraphic typeface with an uneven baseline and some messy characters - not unlike the tree. It is a highly legible, highly enjoyable font and could be used for children's books and postcards. Castanea comes with various alternate glyphs and speaks most Roman-based languages!

Besley Clarendon ML is our version of the Clarendon registered by Robert Besley and the Fann Street Foundry in 1845. Besley Clarendon ML represents a significant change from the slab-serif Antiques & Egyptians that had become so popular in the prior three decades. Like Caslon’s Ionic of 1844, it brackets the serifs and strongly differentiates between the thick and thin strokes. Besley Clarendon is also what today is considered a condensed face, as a comparison to the various contemporary Clarendons will show. Robert Besley’s Clarendon was so popular that many foundries quickly copied it, a fact that caused him to complain vigorously. The reason it was so widely copied is simple ó it was extremely useful. It provided the attention-getting boldness to highlight a word or phrase, yet at the same time was compact and easier to read than the fat faces and antiques of the period. It wasn't until sixty years later that the concept of a typeface family of different weights was developed with DeVinne and Cheltenham. Until then, Clarendon served as everyone’s all-purpose bold face. It can be used for ads, flyers, headers or even short text. Don't leave home without it. Adroit was designed by Phil Martin in 1981. Adroit’s letters have a strong contrast between thick and thin strokes and a distinct diagonal stress.

An isometric grid of a font, Gridlock takes an italicised modular approach to its letterforms. It is, however, not willfully strict about the application of that grid - the W and V and S, for example, have carefully considered diagonals that freely intersect the layout. More strictly designed but possibly less attractive versions are available as alternate characters.

Atipla ND is a contemporary sans serif typeface.
