When 45 RPM records were the norm for a teenager’s music collection in the 1950s and 1960s, many discs had their labels printed by letterpress. Some record companies utilized a bold, condensed typeface set in all caps for the song’s title and other pertinent information. The digital version of this font is called Recording Artist JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions. A companion font loosely based on this type design [but with more original characters and a slightly lighter weight] is Promotional Copy JNL.

Cat Burglar is another off-kilter sans-serif font by Pink Broccoli, this time inspired by the titling of a 1961 Looney Tunes cartoon called "The Pied Piper of Guadalupe". As with some of my previous type designs, it is a typographic drunken stumble, wonderfully and awkwardly stumbling across designs, surprising with each letter typed. With an extensive character set, and offbeat letter weighting, Cat Burglar is fun to typeset with, with a collection of double letter ligatures, as well as discretionary ligature combinations that add to the quirky playfulness.

Bron Shadline is the semi-outline and lighter variation of the original Bron typeface. The outline adds an extra vibrancy, more contrast and bring a special shading effect out. The Shadline version has also two separate layered fonts to make your own multi-color compositions. Possibilities of editing the font are infinite : even use Bron Black Two Color One to add an extra third layer. These can be used separately to create even more subtle effects. Bron Shadline is packed with an extended character set, supporting Central, Western and Eastern European languages.

The inspiration for this typeface family came from my childhood experiences at West Monkton, amidst an historic part of the South West of England. Studies of the original incised capitals of the Trajan column in Rome were analysed and polished for this modern version. The lower case letterforms and numerals were then created in sympathy, taking their proportions from the incised letters of local gravestones. Its name honours not only the area where the original alphabet was conceived and drawn, but also the people responsible for fostering my initial interest in letters.

New Orleans, June 25, 1895 My dear Edmond, I found upon my return home to dinner yesterday, your letter informing me of your affection for Annie and asking that we confide her future happiness to your keeping... This excerpt was taken from a letter written by designer Kathryn Podorsky’s great-great-grandfather, Lucien Doize, in response to Edmond’s request to marry his daughter, Annie. The letter was not only beautiful contextually, but exquisitely penned and epitomized the delightful charm of the New Orleans people of the time. Vena Amoris, or “Vein of Love” refers to a phrase coined by Henry Swinburne in his A Treatise of Espousal published in 1686. Vena Amoris also refers to the fourth finger on the left hand which was traditionally believed to contain a vein running directly to the heart, hence “the ring finger.” As a digital font, Vena Amoris boasts an extensive Latin-based character set that supports 51 languages. Condell Bio Poster is part of the bigger Condell family: a project that involves series of typographies that started to be conceived and developed since 2006. It also includes a bigger legibility version and a sans serif. Condell Bio is very versatile and can be used in the agroindustrial production. Thanks to its strongness and its charm, it can be used in different projects where a short and powerful message is required. For instance in a brand marketing campaign. The Condell project follows in terms of time the design of Comalle (a font also designed by Juan Pablo de Gregorio in 2006), but if we compare them, Condell seems to look for a major range of uses rather than a mere stylistic inspiration. And even if it keeps in its shape some organic forms, Condell seems to be much more similar to a sans serif traditional typography. Condell's fat and soft forms and its nice endings, inspired through spontaneous brush strokes, give it a very peculiar pleasant connotation. Its Italic (10 degrees inclination) have been produced singularly, not automatically calculated by the software. Condell Bio Poster is composed of 2 styles: the regular and the italic. Each one of them have 599 characters and is composed of 206 languages.

Neutral and universal are two words that could describe a kind of perfection. The search for neutrality and universality is part of history in type design; it was specially important in the so-called Swiss Style. Samplex is a typeface that joins this particular search. The design gets rid of unnecessary elements and stays away from style conflicts. The large and slightly condensed body of lowercase letters makes Samplex a good choice for long paragraphs, and especially appropriate for screen devices. Letters with a blocky appearance give shape to a text in perfect order, ideal for grid lovers and layouts with a strict structure. The design of Samplex is clean and efficient. The diagonal cuts are reserved to the italic letterforms, setting some distance between the solid upright characters and the dynamic oblique forms.

We wanted to make an ultra-thin, tall font with a rough, hand-drawn look and ended up with more than we bargained for. To get the font we wanted we started by developing a source font for the basic letter shapes and we ended up with a whole bunch of variations of the basic style. Thus was born the new Ducatus family of fonts, starting with Ducatus Light which developed into the Medium and Heavy versions, and the Medium weight was ultimately used as the basis for the Ducatus Rough font, which was the goal of the project in the first place. Ducatus Rough was created by modifying Ducatus Medium in Photoshop using Gallery Effects and several other filter packages, and then redoing the outlines from scratch in Fontographer. A lot of work, but the result is just what we wanted.

I've been learning to read Cyrillic and Greek letters lately, mainly because I've been playing the game GeoGuessr. (If you haven't played it, I highly recommend! It plops you down somewhere in the world in Google Street View, and you have to figure out where you are.) Cyrillic shows up in so many more places than Russia! You can see it in Bulgaria, Mongolia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kyrgyzstan, and more. Because of that, I made sure to include a fun double-uppercase version of those alphabet sets in Sleepy Bear. They're styled the same way as the Latin characters: all uppercase height, with some lowercase-styled letters thrown in at that same height for a fun look for all ages. I've also made two weights of Sleepy Bear: a plump and smooth regular weight, and a lighter weight that's built to stack on top of the regular (though you can use it on its own). Rahere, founder of St Barts in London The typeface is named after Rahere, a 12th-century Anglo-Norman priest, who founded the Priory of the Hospital of St Bartholomew, London in 1123. In 2007 I was successfully treated at Barts for relapsed testicular cancer so I’m indebted to all the doctors, nurses and support staff who work there. A special shout out to Orchid Cancer – a UK charity that helps men affected by cancer – who funded the research for my treatment.

The term starboard derives from the Old English steorbord, meaning the side on which the ship is steered. Before the steering wheel, boats were steered by an oar at the stern of the ship. Since most sailors were right handed, this is where you would find your steering oar! Starboard font is a rough, handmade, brushy kinda font. It was, of coarse, made with my favourite cheep brush and Chinese ink - resulting in a slightly eroded looking font. Starboard comes with all the trimmings, including double letter ligatures for the lower case.

Handmade Dropshadow JNL was modeled from lettering found on a vintage silk screened metal sign used for point-of-sale marketing. Before the advent of computers and modern techniques, silk screens were hand cut using material called frisket and knife tools, and the lettering reflected the human inconsistencies of cutting these lettering into the template surface for transfer.
