“A couple of years ago, when I was designing a package for a marmalade range, I started having a go at creating a typeface that would suit the package I had in mind. The whole process was intensely appealing to me: from merely using typefaces as an intricate part of my work as an art director, I started exploring the function of each and every element that a typeface consists of. The two things on my mind in designing a typeface for a marmalade brand were firstly, that I wanted it to have a hand-written feel, so as to exude that old-fashioned, homemade quality, and secondly, that it ought to have a certain sweetness and gentleness that would match the product. However, PF Scandal managed to outgrow its original inspiration. As I continued working on it, I toned down some of its elements to make it more versatile. And so, PF Scandal evolved into a typeface that has a contemporary, and yet handwritten look, which makes it suitable for a wide range of uses. The ‘Pro’ version comes with the full array of European characters including Latin, Greek and Cyrillic as well as 120 matching pictograms". -A.S.

VAG Rounded Next brings a classic 1970s typeface up to date, keeping all of its easy going, approachable personality but adding some much-needed versatility and language support. Originally commissioned by Volkswagen, VAG Rounded remained in use by the company until the early 90s and has also been used by Apple, Skype and Myspace. Its enduring appeal lies in its appealingly rounded terminals, and its immediate, informal tone of voice. “When you look at the Volkswagen Beetle it has these curves that are timeless and legendary,” says Steve Matteson, who led the creation of VAG Rounded Next. “I think that's what stands out in this design – that friendly aesthetic, and the simple line and circle.” This new version offers 700 glyphs with pan European language support (including Greek and Cyrllic), as well as 10 weights of upright and italic styles. Italian type design master Aldo Novarese was not famous for making calligraphic designs, nor had he any interest in them. He is much better known for his text faces, and quite innovative sans serif and decorative designs which became the definition of what we now know as techno and modern. But in 1968, Novarese surprised everyone with a fantastic flowing deco script entitled Elite. Novarese's formula of simple soft curves and toned-down swashes makes for one of the most unique alphabets ever seen, not to mention one of the best flowing and most legible scripts. This is now its digital incarnation, named Fontella. Fontella's applications are virtually limitless. This is the sort of script that can feel at home pretty much anywhere; a sign, a fridge magnet, a bumper sticker, a greeting card, a movie poster, a book cover, music artwork, magazine ads, newsletter headlines, etc. Digitized from original specimen and expanded with a few built-in alternates and ligatures by Rebecca Alaccari, the font was named after the famed jazz singer Fontella Bass. These letters are just so sweet they had to be called Fontella.

Canilari is a post-modern type family inspired by Diaguita pottery and contemporary serif typefaces. The Diaguita culture—developed from 10th century A.D. until 16th century A.D.—settled in the area of the present-day north Chile and northwest Argentina. Surviving cultural expressions of the Diaguita people are reduced to just a few pieces of beautifully decorated pottery of high technical quality. Canilari itself is a scream of identity with an incomparable tone that borrows elements from native America and proudly show them to the world. The intense and consistent personality of Canilari makes it a functional font for a wide range of uses: from continuous text in the most challenging environments to pithy, high-impact headlines. For such a diverse catalogue, it was necessary to find a coherent and flexible paradigm which took into account genre and readership differences and ensured harmony among its works. The main idea was to create a typeface suitable for the branding element and which could be used for each title of the immense catalogue. So what makes LFT Arnoldo a companion to the centuries? Starting with the design of the capital letters, it is first a rational typeface with contemporary proportions.
