The script version of the typeface Viabella introduces us to the calligraphic side of the Berlin type designer and typographer Karl-Heinz Lange. The sketches for this script typeface, which resulted from the close cooperation with Veronika Elsner and Günther Flake, found their roots in sketch drawings which Karl-Heinz Lange had already drawn in the 1980’s. For the Viabella design, Karl-Heinz Lange drew the basic letterforms of the Black and Regular cuts with a brush. He then re-worked the drawings and transferred them on to tracing paper. The design studio Elsner+Flake in Hamburg cut these typeface extensions and later digitized them manually with the help of the IKARUS Sustem. With the Regular cut as a basis, Elsner+Flake extended the family with the Light version and interpolated and re-worked the Medium weight. The completion of the family was taken over by the type designer Björn Gogalla who had done the same kind of work on Rotola, a design which Karl-Heinz Lange had also created for Elsner+Flake. While Viabella was originally conceived as a headline typeface, its lighter weights can certainly be used for shorter text applications. The Black version creates powerful headlines with highly effective accents. With the help of swashes, which are available for all weights, the user can lighten up longer texts and add special character to titles. In contrast to pure headline fonts, Viabella has been enriched by an extensive complement of special characters. In addition to the Europa-Plus character set which allows setting type in over 70 latin-based languages, the user will find multiple versions of numerals as well as oldstyle figures, tabular and proportional lining figures, diagonal fractions, and a complete set of superior and inferior figures and fractions (60%). With such a rich character set, Viabella is not only ideal for many different uses in the areas of newspaper, magazine and advertising but it will surely be chosen for the design of greeting cards, invitations and other design projects within the privat sphere.

The story of Serena is a unique one among revivals. Serena was neither a metal face nor a film one. In fact it never went anywhere beyond Stefan Schlesinger’s 1940-41 initial sketches (which he called Saranna). A year later, while working with Dick Dooijes on the Rondo typeface, Schlesinger was sent to a concentration camp where he died, along with any material prospects for the gorgeous letters he'd drawn. The only sketches left of Schlesinger’s Saranna work are found in the archives of the Drukkerij Trio (the owner of which was Schlesinger’s brother-in-law). The sketches were done in pencil and ink over pencil on four sheets of paper. And now Hans van Maanen revives Schlesinger’s spirit as closely as the drawings permit, and elaborately expands the work to cover a multitude of codepages and languages. It took more than 65 years for Schlesinger’s drawings to see the light, so van Maanen made sure to bring them to life stylishly and respectfully. Serena embodies the peace and calm rarely ever found in mainstream calligraphy or other genres of display type. With upright elegance and a slight Eastern touch, this typeface expertly bridges the gracefully casual with the deeply spiritual. The light and soft letter forms add a pleasant, breezy element to anything they touch. Eckmannschrift is a redrawing based on original sketches and type specimens of the original 1900 Otto Eckmann typeface Eckmannschrift. It includes the original characters designed by Otto Eckmann not included in most modern releases of the font. Though it is a vintage typeface, it has found several popular resurgences of use over its 100 years in existence, including today's retro styles and psychedelic posters from the 1960s.

Zenon is a compact text font in four weights. Zenon is a sum of different styles, from Francesco Griffo to Granjon, from modern typefaces to the first sketches of Times New Roman. Zenon is an apparently Renaissance revival with modernish proportions. A closer look reveals that it is a typographic potpourri. Zenon was design as part of the MATD program at the University of Reading.

This font set was developed for the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and their 1999 Monet exhibition, Monet at Giverny: Masterpieces from the Musée Marmattan. Monet Regular is a fairly straightforward script font with an undulating thick and thin stroke. Monet Impressionist is a semi-legible script which can be used for decorative rather than communicative purposes. Monet Sketches features 26 icons related to Monet's imagery.

This is a hand drawn quick-sketch font. I wanted to create a high contrast serif in a cartoonish, kid style. It contains basic latin western and central european language extensions and accents. Looks natural and playful, and really nice on chalkboard texture as you can see on the example above. It comes with the classic default ligatures of fi, fl, ffi and ffl.

A recent walk down memory lane through old college sketchbooks revealed a collection of caricature fish doodles. Then the sketches were discovered by my son who, being a marine life enthusiast, promptly demanded that I draw more fish. Thus, a collection of 71 fish-inspired drawings and bubbly numbers was born. There is even a lemon, since no fish is really complete without one.

I used to be able to sketch headlines in Franklin Gothic, Times, Futura, Helvetica and several scripts. We had a kind of huge inverted camera – which we called Lucy. We projected the alphabet onto a sheet of transparent paper, outlined the letters with a fineliner and then filled them in. It was very tedious work, but the resulting headline had its own charm and we had a permanent race going on who was best and fastest. I won most of the time! I made the first sketches for Brocha when I first visited Easter Island in 2011. I took inspiration from pre-Columbian art for such sketches, but I must say that they were kind of rough and clumsy; it was an experimental and limited-use typeface. It took a long time, but thanks to my learning about type design gained over the years, I have finally been able to complete my project. I have made sure to preserve the Latin American spirit of my original designs in order to give my final typeface an expressively handmade, highly humanist look. Brocha is a display sans with friendly design ideal for high-impact headlines, logotypes or use on cookies packaging designs. Brocha consists of 2 subfamilies: one basic and one alternative. Each subfamily comes in 8 weights plus italics. The Alt version is highly recommended for those art directors who look for more varied fonts when designing.

ITC Hedera's roots can be traced to a suite of initials intended for book design. Olivera Stojadinovic, the face's designer, made the first sketches for the initials with a handmade tool consisting of two flexible metal strips tied to a wooden handle. This makeshift pen created the distinctive uneven double strokes of the letterforms. Stojadinovic says that she tried to keep the original flavor of the sketches in the finished font. Stroke roughness has been preserved in final execution, though the characters had some cleaning and polishing," she notes. Based on Renaissance letterforms, ITC Hedera has a classical quality that complements its calligraphic exuberance. The name Hedera? According to Stojadinovic, "It's the name of a common ivy. I chose it because of the organic image of the character strokes, which, to me, resemble shapes from nature's leaves or stems of plants." Rough-hewn yet elegant, ITC Hedera is an exceptional display design."

Must a letter always have a symmetrical basic form? What happens when the shape of the letters stretch like an arc in the reading direction? When writing with a broad nib, this is easily achieved. The HGB Santo examines the effect of this formal principle on the readability of a text. First attempts have shown a warm and reader-friendly typeface. Six shades from Light to Black, each with an italic should be sufficient for most applications. Small caps and old-style figures are available via OpenType features as well as some ornamental forms in the italics.

This series, with 104 illustrations in three files, collects original ink drawings with absurdities, bizarre people, whimsical personalities and risky behaviors! There is a very peculiar sense of narrative in the sucession of characters, even if they came out rather spontaneously and their order is random.With a vintage look and feel, these people seem to come out of a time capsule from Victorian times. Almost everything in the Bizarries (and also in their close relatives, our Illustries, Whimsies, Ombres, Absurdies and Genteta dingbats) is invented and drawn with no references —just a handful of images were sketched from historical photography. Metaverse Display Font Family The basic skeleton structure of this font family is based on block-shaped rectangles and arcs. Luxus Brut Sparkling developed from sketches for a bolder version of Luxus Brut that I made for a poster design. Interventions like slightly tightening the (still generous) spacing and amplifying the contrast between thick and thin strokes ended in a complete rework of the original font. All the shapes have been redrawn in respect of their distinctive origin in mid 1900’s signage lettering. It has now even more timeless elegance!

This is a relaunch version of Joost, a milestone of the Type-Ø-Tones catalogue. This revival of Joost Schmidt’s typeface now has a capital set, a new weight and some OpenType features. Not to mention alternate glyphs for M, N, Ñ, and W characters. The inspiration came from the 'bauhaus dessau im gewerbemuseum' basel exhibition poster, designed in 1929 by Franz Ehrlich after a sketch by Joost Schmidt.

Keetoowah evolved from a just a few letters in a sketch for a sorority t-shirt design. They loved it and kept asking for more of the same. The only solution was to make a font. These characters were made to be broken up, two toned, rotated, merged and jammed together. But, Keetoowah has a serious side. It has a great Southwestern flavor like smokey BBQ and patterned blankets.

I designed Lowbridge Hand for product designers, fashion designers, architects, garden designers and anyone who wants to annotate their sketches and drawings. This is something I wish I had when I was a design student. It has different weights allow you to better match your pen size used on your drawings or to emphasise text. It is an all caps font.
