The inspiration for SJURecord was calligraphic lettering used for the title of a student newspaper, St. John’s Record, during the late 1920s and early 1930s. The three upper-case and nine lower-case letters were considerably different from any calligraphic lettering I had developed, so I thought creating a complete typeface around these twelve letters would be an interesting challenge. The SJCRecord family has four members: regular, oblique, shadowed, and oblique shadowed. There are alternate letters for A, J, L, S, V, W, and X.

Inversi is a reverse-stress typeface that may be used as a display or text-face font for a wide range of subjects. Kwersity is a boxy, geometric, slab-serifed typeface with strokes of uniform weight. Its circular elements are almost rectangular. The narrower style has a high x-height. Both the narrower and wider variants come in three weights, regular, semi-bold, and bold. (In its original, pre-2020 form, what is now semi-bold was bold. What is now bold is new as of 2020.) There is also a shadow version; Kwersity-semibold can be layered on top of it to color the interior of the letters.

Bowdon is a warm, Bodoni-inspired English Modern, influenced by the 1930s lettering of designer Barnett Freedman. Slightly rounded corners give characters a printed-look softness, and hairlines are thickened a little to increase legibility at smaller sizes, reducing the harshness and dazzle that can afflict Didone typefaces. Bowdon is supplied in three widths – Regular, Wide and Narrow – and each width is accompanied by a utilitarian oblique rather than a fancy italic. Insan, designed by Ihsan Al-Hammouri in 2005, is a modern Arabic typeface in three different weights. The design is based on simplified Naskh with a very low modulated stroke treatment. It is suited for text settings, especially in brochures and magazines. It is characterized by a large body height and open counters and as such can be used in small sizes. The font includes a matching Latin design and support for Arabic, Persian, and Urdu. It also includes proportional and tabular numerals for the supported languages.

While viewing a YouTube video of film footage in and around New York in the mid-1930s, one scene showed some people “window shopping” by the storefront office of the French Line, an international steamship service. A screen capture allowed the storefront sign to be recreated as the digital typeface Steamship JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

This all started as a bunch of letter written using a squared paper as a guide. It all turned out fine, but there was something that wasn't quite right...it was boring! I took all the letters and grunge it all up and did all the drips as well - and suddenly that boring look was gone! That was an unlikely development!
