Fantastic ML is an exuberant Art Nouveau font. It was originally released as “Modern Style” by Fonderie G. Peignot & Fils, Paris, France sometime before 1903. Since “Le style moderne” was the generic French name for Art Nouveau, it is possible that someone decided a less generic name was needed. The typeface became known as Fantastic. Compared to conventional text letters, it is just that. Fantastic has a whimsical, architectural feel. The typeface reminds me of a cross between Hoffmann’s Palais Stoclet in Brussels and Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia church in Barcelona. The letterforms themselves are similar to those by Ludwig von Zumbusch on the cover of “Jugend” in March, 1896, but with the addition of serifs. Fantastic ML is a decorative, all-cap font intended for display use and functions best at 18 points or larger. There are a total of 306 glyphs. In addition to the standard 1252 Western Europe Code Page with character slots up to decimal position 255, there are glyphs for the 1250 Central Europe, the 1252 Turkish and the 1257 Baltic Code Pages. However, some older applications may only be able to access the Western Europe character set (1252). The zip package includes two versions of the font at no extra charge. Megumi was originally commissioned as a headline face for a fashion and lifestyle magazine with a heavy Japanese influence. The uppercase letters are narrow and have an almost monospaced aesthetic, being influenced by Romaji letterforms. Serifs are severe, and curves sinuous. Although experiments were made with extra weight, it was decided that only this ultra light weight would be developed, to be set large in headlines. The italic has an over-the-top 35° slant (so slanted in fact that the backslash from the italic is the exact same shape as the forward slash in the Roman) and a discretionary ligature feature that can be engaged to add extra interest to headlines. The Roman has a few wide alternate glyphs for round uppercase characters. Both styles have a stylistic set (ss03) feature which switches regular parentheses for angle brackets, which the Art Director thought “looked cool”. In a mess of venture capitalist pull-outs and Covid related issues, the publication never came to be, but the Hipster Japanophile Magazine World’s loss is your gain, as this beautifully crafted, editorial oddity is now available to license. Probably as a reaction to the pragmatism of modernist design, the seventies saw an explosion of buoyant, vivacious typography. Psychedelia fueled a return to the melting, lush shapes of Art Nouveau while Pop culture embraced the usage of funky, joyful lettering for advertising, product design and tv titling. New low-cost technologies like photo-lettering and rub-on transfer required new fonts to be expressive rather than legible, pushing designers to produce, bubbly, high-spirited masterpieces, where geometric excess and calligraphic inventions melted joyfully. Freitag is Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini's homage to this era and its typography. His starting point was the design of a heavy sans serif with humanist condensed proportions, flared stems and reverse contrast, that generated both the main family, and a variant display subfamily. The main typeface family slowly builds the tension and design exuberance along the weight axis - a bit like our desire for the weekend increases during the week. In Light and Medium weights the font shows a more controlled, medium-contrast design, tightly spaced for maximum display effect. The Book weight follows the same design but uses a more relaxed letter spacing to allow usage in smaller sizes and short body copy.
