Waba Pronounced ‘Vah-bah’, is a font family that I designed. The name comes from a historical variation on the Estonian word ‘vaba’ – meaning ‘free’, or 'at liberty'. Back in 2017 I visited the Estonian Print & Paper Museum in Tartu to see its great collection of type (well worth a visit!). While I was there I saw some big woodcut blocks of Reklameschrift Herold - a super Art Nouveau/Jugendstil style display font. The Print & Paper Museum's collection covers both Latin and Cyrillic faces and as a foreigner in these parts I'm kind of fascinated by the exoticism of Cyrillic. How it is different but the same to the Latin letters I take for granted (as a humble Englander – no excuses). Not to mention, Jugendstil with its imitation of natural form, reverse-weights and looping-delicious curves (like you've left the window open all summer and the garden plants are climbing in). This mix of Jugendstil, Cyrillic letters and the beautiful historical border town of Tartu inspired me to start drawing Waba. Trimming the serifs from Herold, simplifying those angles and expanding the category of weights, then taking look at the magical logic of Berthold Block and doing a few things that just seemed right at the time – Waba is a bit of love letter to Estonia, the Baltics and the visual history of Eastern Europe. Waba Monogram Waba also contains a monogram face, which allows you to create any monogramming latin and cyrillic. Simply type out your 2-3-4 characters in Waba Monogram, making sure Contextual Alternates is turned on them voila! Monograms can be customised manually using the OpenType select-pop-up in Adobe. Also included are a few Discretionary Ligatures for Mc, De, Von etc. Monograms work best when Contextual Alternates is turned on.

Another typical Art Deco font from Nick Curtis. Uppercase only, but with alternate letterforms in the lowercase positions. I have completely redesigned all the diacritics (which were way too flimsy for this robust design) before expanding the character set in the usual fashion. Nick Curtis says: "Back in the Olden Days of Graphic Design B.C. (before computers), type freaks used to wait in anxious anticipation for each new release of the Letraset catalog. The inspiration for this font, Premiere Lightline, was one such release, and probably help spur my interest in Deco designs. The original font was VERY light indeed, suitable only for use in large sizes. My version is beefier, and includes an entire lower case of alternate letterforms, making this (at least) two fonts in one. The name is the 40’s hep talk equivalent of “Cool!”". Jessie's Letter is based on an old typed letter by Kerrie's great step grandmother. This letter was undated, but we think it must have been from the 1920s or so. Jessie wasn't much for punctuation, so there aren't any of those pesky question marks and exclamation points. But, she did make mistakes in her typing, so we've included cross outs and strange resulting characters to make up for the lack of everyday punctuation. Maybe Jessie wanted to visit Paris, or maybe she secretly made paintings in her back yard, or maybe she dreamed of painting her house bright pink. Well, maybe not, but it's fun to dream...

Karisans is a hand drawn, layerable sans serif font. By layering the various styles differently the user can achieve many different effects.

This is what you get when you mix monoline rounded letters with some bracketed serifs and finish it off with a sprinkle of ornamental appendages. The result is very readable, rather original and quite charming. I have fixed some inconsistencies in serif designs across the weights, cleaned up the serif connections - and added a fourth weight. But I have kept all the wonky curves and slightly differing stroke thicknesses, as they are so integral to the charm. Kevin King says: "I guess all type designers at some point think 'Well, I'll just have a go at a standard text face...' There is a long story here somewhere, suffice it to say that I started with the thinnest version - typical. I wanted to make a standard serif text face - until I saw it in print and thought "Yuk! it looks like everything else!" - still does really but with twiddles and pooneys..." If you find the "twiddles & pooneys" too much you can tone them down with the OpenType Stylistic Alternate feature (which will make sure they don't appear on three consecutive letters) or remove them completely with the OpenType Swash feature. German type designer Steffen Sauerteig created this slab FontFont in 1999. The family contains 4 weights: Regular, Italic, Black, and Black Italic and is ideally suited for advertising and packaging, editorial and publishing, logo, branding and creative industries, poster and billboards as well as wayfinding and signage. Luks Deco took inspiration from the glory of Roaring 20’s when the Art Deco style rose to its heyday. The strong geometric shape emphasizes the touch of retro yet modern style. Linotype Cutter was designed by Georg John in 1997. As the name suggests, the font looks like it was cut out of black cardboard pieces. Each letter has a irregular rectangle black background and they combine to form heavy rows of letter elements. The strong contrasts of the font make it good for short headlines or initials in larger point sizes and combines well with almost any text font. Georg John made a second version of this theme called Linotype Schere (scissors) it is a companion typeface where the conturs of the letters are even rougher in its form.

Burlesk Queen JNL was inspired by the hand lettered title “Gypsy” on the sheet music for "Everything's Coming Up Roses" from the movie musical based on the autobiography of famed stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. With just four basic letters to work with [G,Y,P and S], a full character set was drawn from scratch. The design features bold spur serif characters on individual ‘marquees’ bordered with lights. Burlesk Queen One JNL is the original version with white characters on black panels, while Burlesk Queen Two JNL has those panels stripped away to provide black letters on a white background.

Aladdin Black is the 3rd member of our Aladdin Bold Font Family. This new style is extra bold and slightly rounded on the outsides of the glyphs. It is fat, fancy, fearless, forward, devilish, heavy, and stylized. Aladdin Bold was my first font introduced in 2012. I've always felt there were possibilities of adding styles to this family and something triggered the decision, so...here it is. I took much time deliberating over many of the finer details in this version of Aladdin and I hope the 'devil is in the details' for whoever decides to try on Aladdin Black.

Ice Creamery is a new variation of our Saloon Girl font family complete with italics and fill fonts which may be used to layer different colors into the open parts of each glyph. We don’t recommend using the fill fonts for Ice Creamery as stand alone solid fonts, Ice Creamery Chocolate was designed as a the stand alone solid font for this font family. Fill fonts go back to the 1850's where they would design matched sets of printing blocks and the layering of colors took place on the printing press, they would print a page in black then on a second printing they would print a solid letter in red or blue over the letters with open spaces to fill them in. Most of the time the second printing didn't line up exactly to the open faced font and it created a misprinted look. With the fill fonts in Ice Creamery and other FontMesa fonts you have the option to perfectly align the fill fonts with the open faced fonts or shift it a little to create a misprinted look which looks pretty cool in some projects such as t-shirt designs. I have some ice cream making history in my family, my Grandfather Fred Hagemann was the manager of the ice cream plant for thirty years at Cock Robin Ice Cream and Burgers in Naperville IL. In the images above I've included an old 1960's photo of the Cock Robin Naperville location, the ice cream plant was behind the restaurant as seen by the chimney stack which was part of the plant. If you were to travel 2000 feet directly behind the Cock Robin sign in the photo, that's where I started the FontMesa type foundry at my home in Naperville. My favorite ice cream flavor was their green pistachio ice cream with black cherries, they called it Spumoni even though it wasn't a true Spumoni recipe. Their butter pecan ice cream was also incredibly good, the pecans were super fresh, their Tin Roof Sundae ice cream was chocolate fudge, caramel and peanuts swirled into vanilla ice cream. One unique thing about Cock Robin and Prince Castle was they used a square ice cream scoop for their sundaes.

Velvet is a heavy rounded block retro face inspired by the typeset album cover of the protopunk rock band The Velvet Underground’s debut. Stylistically, Velvet’s extreme angled terminals exude a sense of tension and irreverance, contrasting the smooth rounded block letter forms.

The first photo-typesetting machine in operation, the Uhertype, was introduced in 1925. It was a combination of manual phototypesetting machine and make-up machine. The machine’s typefaces were designed by Jan Tschichold. The patents on Uhertype were bought up at the time to prevent the invention of filmsetting spreading. Jan Tschichold has been very influenced by Gill Sans (1928) for this humanistic sans serif drawn in 1933/36 for Uhertype.

Back when shop window decoration was done with a brush, every window designer had his own style. In this vein the sans serif Altrincham was created. But even as a text font, it has stood the test of time, since it is very easy to read even in smaller point sizes, thanks to its relatively large x-height. With the Altrincham Condensed and Altrincham Wide Bold two other fonts have been created to perfectly complement the font family.

The cold, conservative strokes of a typical sans-serif/grotesque descend into a distinctive "bat-wing drip" in this subtly spooky font named after the band for which it was originally designed. Perfect for any wordings which project darkness or menace, yet still require an air of respectability. Business in the front, evil in the back. Rudge is an intentionally rough sans-serif font. It was designed to share the look and feel of many “antique” fonts, although it lacks the standard serif look of those fonts. The corners are slightly rounded, the edges are wobbly, and the kerning is tight. It could be used as a faux “sloppy printing” font or just a more regularized hand-drawn font. It comes in six flavors: Light, Regular, and Bold, with italic versions of each.

Candy Design is a display font containing 265 glyphs. It was designed during a stay in Tanzania, Zanzibar in 2022. The main idea was to combine a sans-serif modernist, grotesque typeface with the addition of delicate Arabic accents. Its main assumption of use is posters, product design and branding. Unusual, dynamic and unpredictable accents that are found in practically every letter give the character of a very custom font, also completely not intended for typesetting, which, contrary to the features mentioned above, remains legible. Usually all letters are of the same size - however, as we used to when designing, hide small flavors in the whole sequence of numbers / letters and characters.
