Inside the pages of the April, 1937 issue of the fan magazine “Hollywood Now” is an unusual bit of hand lettering used for the titles in a number of featured articles. A narrow thick-and-thin Art Deco alphabet with many stylized characters, this type design is now available as Now Showing JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Our font (circa 1895) of this old wood type was made by Hamilton of Two Rivers, Wisconsin, but we have been told that another identical font was made earlier by W. H. Page, Greeneville, Connecticut. Hamilton became the final home of many of the old wood type patterns as the early companies went out of business.

Kris Holmes and Janice Prescott digitalized some letters from this book and some from a Grotesk font in the style of Frutiger. A computer filled in the blanks and the designers then gave the font its finishing touches by hand.

A small book entitled “Portfolio of Alphabet Designs for Artists, Architects, Designers & Craftsmen” [published in 1938 by Irene K. Ames] contained a number of pages displaying hand lettered alphabet examples. One sample in particular stood out for its bold Art Deco look and unusual design. This is now available as Dance Moderne JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Here’s another gem pulled from the pages of one of the many editions of Pen and Brush Lettering by the Blandford Press. Folsom JNL is one of the many stencil fonts Jeff Levine has recreated from original sources. This particular design was modeled from a kit made by the Meyercord Company of Chicago. In the original, some of the letters were solid rather than stencil forms, but Jeff gave all of the letters the traditional treatment for continuity.
