Raniscript started out as an idea for a bold and strongly structured ronde style script with some contemporary touches. As I tinkered with various forms it took on a life of its own. Having an old world feel, it makes me visualize faded shop signs from India written in English. The name comes from a series of colorful vintage matchbook designs advertising the Flying Rani. Normative Lt is a sans serif type family by Green Type, a low cost version of Normative Pro, includes only a Unicode Latin 1252 character set. An unsold 1973 TV pilot for the series “Catch 22” (based on Joseph Heller’s 1961 book and the subsequent 1970 movie) had its title hand lettered in an extra bold stencil type style. Heller coined the phrase as a satire on absurd military rules and bureaucracy. Although the show’s title provided only five characters to work with, there was enough inspiration there to create the military styled Enlisted Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. According to Wikipedia: “A catch-22 is a paradoxical situation from which an individual cannot escape because of contradictory rules or limitations.”

The Swedish designer/typographer Anders Bodebeck designed the Bodebeck type family in 2002. The family, which includes five different styles, is primarily intended for use as a titling, or display face, and belongs to the neo-transitional style of typefaces. Transitional style type first appeared in England during the late 1750s, when John Baskerville released his first sets of type. Bodeck bears similarities to another, later transitional style typeface as well - Eric Gill's Perpetua (originally released by the British Monotype Corporation in 1928). Like these two previous English stonecutters turned masters of typography, Anders Bodebeck has given us a modern re-interpretation of classic letterforms. This variation of Tangential (see also the Standard & Semi Serif variants) continues with the angles that give the typeface its name; however, the square terminals are half-rounded to create a softer and slightly more fluid styling. The Tangential style I envisaged for the family is complemented by the prominent use of negative space throughout, most apparent on the drop-shaped ‘o,’ which is a key feature of the typeface and a letterform I'm particularly pleased with.
