The Parliament typeface was designed by Jonathan Hoefler beginning in 1995. A burlesque typeface in the Regency Blackletter style, Parliament was inspired by the ‘Four-line Pica Black No. 1’ typeface of William Caslon Jr (1821), whose enigmatic design for the letters E, G, I, N, V and Y hinted at a broader ambition to modernize the arcane shapes of the gothic alphabet’s capital letters. Parliament completes this project for the first time by including two sets of alphabets, one archaic and one modern, along with a third set of ‘small caps’ that restores to the blackletter the versatility of Roman type. Parliament was first used for the 1998 ATypI Conference in Lyon, and was published by Hoefler&Co in 2022.

Another William H. Page classic, Gothic Dotted, provided the pattern for this bold and brassy typeface. Both versions of this font support the Latin 1262, Central European 1250, Turkish 1254 and Baltic 1257 codepages.

Aeron started with a no-nonsense geometric sans-serif structure that grew into a functional semi-serif family of fonts. Half-rounded slabs mix with curvy and squared-off terminals for a personable yet structured family that works in all sizes.

The idea behind designing ‘Matwin’ font was related to the youngest children of the designer namely the M-A fraternal twin. The name of the typeface (i.e., Matwin or M-A-Twin) was composed by merging three linguistic small syllables. The ‘-Twin’ syllable refers to the non-identical twin of the designer. The ‘M-’ and ‘A-’ syllables refer to the initial letters of the twin’s first names (i.e., Muhammad and Abdul-Wli) respectively. The typeface ‘Matwin’ has a personal trait which makes it as one of the most favorite fonts for the designer among his humble collection of fonts. Modestly, it is the designer’s handwriting and it has been designed to be added to the script font family known as brush un-joined. The brief process for having this typeface alive was done by firstly scanning the real script for each Latin letter, digit, symbol which were handwritten earlier by the designer himself. Sinkwitz Gotisch is a new release of the font of the same name originally designed by Paul Sinkwitz in 1942. The Sinkwitz Gotisch was 1942 by Schriftguss AG Dresden font cast first cast and later supplied by the East German firm VEB Typoart. Paul Sinkwitz (1899-1981) has created them. This font displays not the characteristics of a chunky Gothic, which have influenced the image of national socialism. Paul Sinkwitz was a painter, graphic artist, wood engraver, was interested in religious topics, which he had presented in numerous graphics. But also his interpretation of his Gothic font is modern, without having the font this is ugly. In addition to the GOTISCH he created Roman Uppercase letters, which perfectly harmonize with the lowercase letters. This extra font is called BASTARD. The digital version of Sinkwitz is a beneficial addition to a Gothic with calligraphic character and should be in any historically interested graphic design.

The first version of Libris I designed in London in 1997 when I worked for Frank Magazine. Later Libris was used in the magazine for text and display. In 1999 Libris was chosen as the corporate typeface of Bally Switzerland. I also was involved in the design of the entire branding. In the early days of printing it was soon recognized that there was a need to identify the printer and publisher behind the printed work. So these industrious people created marks to identify themselves to clients. This font contains over 160 marks dating back to the early years of printing with the likes of Fust, Ratdolt, Manutius, Caxton, and a whole host of others represented. Some of these printers were very influential and altered the course of history, some merely enabled the broader public to access the classics. Some were imprisoned and others helped foment revolutions. But all were riding the new current of this technology of moveable type that helped transform our world through the enabling of easily exchanging information.
