Linotype Schwennel is part of the Take Type Library, selected from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This prize-winning font was designed by the German artist Svenja Voss. The figures seem to have been somehow eroded, parts of some strokes are completely missing, contours seem washed away. The eye works to put the pieces together to form a meaningful series of figures. The second weight, lila+negro, completes the letter fragments of the lila weight. Missing pieces are filled in and contours completed, making the resulting text stronger and a bit more legible. Linotype Schnwennel is intended exclusively for headlines in larger point sizes.

Kandij is a Dutch word and it means ‘Rock Sugar’. We Dutch use it in a lot of products, from ‘ontbijtkoek’ (a rye based spiced cake we sometimes eat for breakfast) to Fryske Sûkerbôle, A Frisian sweet bread. Kandij is a fat and happy font. I’d probably use it for any book or product aimed at children, as it has a certain lumpy cuteness. Comes with diacritics and swashes for the upper case letters.

The mysterious Spooky, an alphabet to frighten even the bravest, was created by British designer Timothy Donaldson. The figures line themselves up, irregular and with uneven outer contours, and conjure up thoughts of ghosts, bats, vampires and darkness. Anne's Hand is a custom handwriting font of Anne Hubbard, who tragically lost her battle with anorexia nervosa this past January. Anne loved to write, so her brother Richard designed a custom font of her handwriting as a tribute to her memory. All proceeds from its sale will go to the National Eating Disorders Association to support programs and services like the NEDA Navigators and Loss Support Network, programs that many families count on for support.

Kanna Aoki had fairy tales in mind when she designed MVB Greymantle. She drew dots with a felt pen to build up the forms, giving them their particular rough character. The “Extras” font contains a set of whimsical illustrations, including a portrait of Greymantle—her 18-pound cat, a set of curly initial caps, and border parts.  MVB Greymantle has been spotted on numerous children's books, in magazines, in salad dressing advertisements, and on food packaging.

Typefaces with very thin verticals and fat, square serifs were popular in the 19th century for display. Hollywood helped associate this style with the Old West, but reference books identify some of it as Italian style. WyomingSpaghetti, part of an extended family of typefaces, has a name which combines these two associations. Most typefaces of this type are very condensed, but this one is not. The letter o is nearly circular, which is rather unusual in this style.

Addressotype is based on lettering from a vintage ad for the Addressograph-Multigraph Corporation, manufacturers of the Addressograph addressing machine. In days when the U.S. postal service delivered everything, mailing addresses were as important as email addresses are today. The Addressograph machines stamped out dog-tag-like plates that were used to print mailing labels at high volume. Embodying the company’s work ethic and durability, Addressotype recalls the gaspipe form of lettering popular in the 30s and 40s, updated to reflect the “streamlining” trend popular during the period.

Sello is a hand-drawn, geometric sans-serif with a touch of retro style. It's a unicase typeface inspired by hand-engraved, mid-1960s Spanish postage stamps, hence the name "Sello" – Spanish for "stamp". This font comes in three different weights – light, regular, and bold – with a regular and oblique version of each for a total of 6 styles. Vowels have a special third alternate glyph. In Holland we eat pancakes with black syrup and I always thought that this ‘suikerstroop’ was the same as molasses. Turns out that’s not the case; syrup is made from sugar, but molasses is a by-product of the sugar refining industry. To celebrate the fact that I learned something new, I named this font family Black Molasses. Black Molasses was made using various cheap brushes and Chinese Ink. It comes in a ‘fat’ version and a ‘light’ version that work together really well.

Dedicated to the XXII summer Olympic Games. I was inspired by the icons of these games when creating font Olymp80. This is an excerpt from the official report of the Moscow Olympics: "Sports pictographs, as we know, are pictographic drawings symbolising sports. They serve as points of reference and help overcome language barrier. Over the past few years, they have been integrated into the decoration of Olympic cities, and have been depicted in Olympic posters, commemorative medals, postage stamps, tickets, souvenirs, etc. On the OCOG-80’s request, graduates from several art colleges took up the design of the pictographs of the insignia as the theme of their dissertations. With the help of the research institute of industrial aesthetics, the Organising Committee chose the work submitted by Nikolai Belkov, Mukhina Art School graduate from Leningrad. The State Committee for Inventions and Discoveries under the USSR Council of Ministers recognised the new design as a production pattern. Though highly stylised, the new signs are easily comprehensible. They are smoother in outline because they are constructed at an angle of 30-60 (previously the angle was 45-90). Another merit of the new system is that the designs can be adapted for use in four representations: direct (solid, black against a white background), reverse (solid, white against a black background), contour (black contour against a white background), and reverse-contour (white contour against a black background), and permit several colour and shade and size variations." Twirrewyn is Frisian for ‘Whirlwind’. I have always liked the Frisian language; it’s like a crossover between English and Dutch. When I studied journalism in Zwolle (a city close to Fryslân) there were a lot of Frisian students and I did pick up a few words! Twirrewyn is a handmade font family: the fat version was made using a brush and ink; the light version was made using that same ink, but with a broken satay skewer instead of a brush. And yes, you have guessed right, we eat a lot of Satay! ;-)

Boldstrom is a heavy-handed, all caps, display font available in 5 versions. Emphasis was put into strong line weight, minimal contrast, and tight curves. This family is defined by very broad stems with comparatively thinner cross strokes. Spacing was condensed to ensure the characters fit snug against one another. This was done in part to minimize negative space while also creating tension. The result is a powerful looking sans serif designed to command attention and make a statement. Boldstrom will be best used in large format print, titling, books, movie posters, or company logos.

Her father named her Estella Dawn, or morning star. She truly shines bright, for as the owner of Stella Roberts Fonts, she has dedicated part of her net profits to helping her siblings pay for their medication; they both suffer from Cystic Fibrosis and diabetes. Calm in spirit, loyal to friends and family, nurturing and caring-- Stella has been a friend of Jeff Levine's for years. His Estella JNL font was dedicated to her, as is this other namesake font, Morningstar JNL. The design is a cross between retro-techno and a slight calligraphic touch.

This family was inspired mainly (Normal and Italic style ) by a Didot pattern font used in Rennes (France, Britanny) by Cousin-Danelle, printers, for Antiquités historiques et monumentales ‡ visiter de Montfort ‡ Corseul, par Dinan... Saint Malo... etc. an historic guidebook for a journey through a part of (French) Brittany in 1820, and many other books. The present version contains 1820 Modern Normal and Italic, 1820 Modern Large Normal and 1820 Modern Narrow Normal, each style with small caps. This font may be used together with 1906 French News and/or 1906 Titrage.

According to Wiktionary, "the cat's pajamas" was a slang phrase coined by Thomas A. Dorgan, the well-known journalist, cartoonist and sportswriter of that era. The phrase became popular in the U.S. in the 1920s, as the word "cat" was used as a term to describe the unconventional flappers from the jazz era. This was combined with the word pyjamas (a relatively new women's fashion during that time) to form a phrase used to describe something that is the best at what it does, thus making it highly sought and desirable. Wikipedia adds that Dorgan was the first to use the terms "twenty-three, skidoo", and "yes, we have no bananas", "apple sauce" and "solid ivory", which also became part of the slang of the "Roaring Twenties". Katz Pajamas JNL is a condensed slab serif typeface based on the title lettering for the 1944 sheet music "Pretty Kitty Blue Eyes", hence the pun-laden font name paying homage to this bit of verbal Americana as well as making the pajamas a pair owned by Mr. Katz instead of the fashionable feline. Available in both regular and oblique versions.

Inspired by the lettering on Koloman Moser’s poster design for Fromme’s Calendar (circa 1912), Nouveau Calendar JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions. According to Wikipedia: “Koloman Moser (30 March 1868 – 18 October 1918) was an Austrian artist who exerted considerable influence on twentieth-century graphic art and one of the foremost artists of the Vienna Secession movement and a co-founder of Wiener Werkstätte. Moser designed a wide array of art works, including books and graphic works from postage stamps to magazine vignettes; fashion; stained glass windows, porcelains and ceramics, blown glass, tableware, silver, jewelry, and furniture.”
