The design of Futura seems to be timeless. This typeface family which had been developed in 1926 by Paul Renner for the Bauer Type Foundry in the style of constructivism and as part of the Bauhaus movement, experienced, however, in the course of the past 90 years, repeated time-appropriate revivals which guaranteed its on-going popularity. The version of the Futura EF Pro contains the original character constructions which Dennis Megaw described as the “first designs of Futura” in 1938 in “20th century sans serif types, Typography no. 7” (See: Dr. Christopher Burke: Paul Renner, Princeton Architectural Press, New York 1998). What makes it exceptional is the extension into three weights: “Text”, “Headline” and “Index” which came about as part of a degree dissertation at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HFBK) in Hamburg. In this context, the accompanying documentation “Die Kritik der reinen Futura” (“The Critique of the Pure Futura”) by Katharina Strauer was published by the Materialverlag, Hamburg, in 2003. Some copies are still available at Elsner+Flake.

Rialto dF is a book face inspired by calligraphic tradition. Named after the famous bridge in Venice, it was conceived as a bridge between calligraphy and typography, roman and italic. It can also be thought of as an imaginary bridge between Italy and Austria, since it is the result of collaboration started in 1995 between the Austrian Lui Karner and Venetian Giovanni de Faccio. The letterforms of Rialto dF were drawn directly in digital format with a starting point deriving from humanistic letterforms memorized in the hearts, minds and the manual ability of its designers… As tradition demands, uppercase, numerals and punctuation are used in combination with italics – the same solution adopted by Francesco Griffo when he cut his first italic for the Virgil, the first of the octavo series printed and published in Venice by Aldus Manutius in 1501. Rialto dF comes in two optical weights: Piccolo, for up to 14 pt, and Grande for 16pt and above. Alternate characters and various dingbats are also provided and these are available through OpenType features developed by type designer and technician Karsten Luecke.

VTC Bloke is a revival of Miller & Richard’s classic metal typeface, ‘Egyptian Expanded’, including the three-dimensional, ‘Open’ style that was later introduced to the family. The roots of this typeface stem from the UK, where William Miller and his son-in-law Richard had their initial foundry in Edinburgh, Scotland. In addition to the beautiful and timeless type designs, the foundry gained a reputation for offering super small type sizes, designed for Bibles, dictionaries, documents, etc. Slab Serifs (or Egyptian Serifs) started to gain popularity in the early 19th century. It’s around this time, due to emerging industrial technologies, and an ever-expanding advertising industry, that type designers started to really experiment with letterforms that could help their clients distinguish themselves from the competitor, and catch people's eyes. The size of posters and advertising space was getting bigger, and bigger, and so was the type. Metal Cry is a font family that was inspired by countless hours spent playing video games, watching old movies or reading comic books. And even more hours closely analysing the design of all these things. The art of creating beautiful letters has slowly declined with the rise of the digital age and its solid-colour, 2D fonts. And most of the time, the care given to typography in cultural products just isn't what it used to be anymore. This was the inspiration for Metal Cry, a family of 4 layerable fonts that can bring a feeling of depth to its letters, and offers endless possible combinations. A 1934 advertisement for the Roney Plaza Hotel at 23rd Street and Collins Avenue on Miami Beach yielded the inspiration for Tropical Tourist JNL. While this wonderful example of Art Deco lettering survived, sadly the original Roney was torn down around 1969 and replaced with a modern apartment house/condos bearing the same name.

The Nov. 26, 1921 issue of “The Moving Picture World” carried an ad for the dramatic film “For Your Daughter’s Sake” (originally tilted “The Common Sin” and produced in 1920). Hand lettered in an Art Nouveau sans serif style, the ad copy inspired Movie Drama JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The lettering for Fine Dining JNL was inspired by the opening titles for the 1940 Barbara Stanwyck-Fred MacMurray film "Remember the Night". A stylized Art Deco sans, the typeface conjures up images of elegant dining, being out on the town and all we warmly associate with the night life of the 1930s and 1940s.

Sheet music for a selection from the 1928 musical “New Moon” had the show’s title hand lettered in a bold sans serif that reflected the upcoming Art Deco movement, along with a contoured outline around the letters. This served as the model for Poster Contoured JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The Book of Kells is a ninth century gospel created in the British Isles and is considered to be the finest existing example of early Celtic art. The book itself is now housed in the Trinity College Library, Dublin. This computer set combines historical accuracy with functional readability and features 72 elements and linking borders.

The hand lettered title found on the sheet music for 1938’s "So Help Me (If I Don't Love You)" was the basis for Totally Deco JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. A classic mix of widely rounded letters and condensed letters typifies the design style of the Art Deco era.

A 1938 issue of the Spanish language movie fan magazine Cine-Mundial (Movie World) had an article entitled "Lo Que Visten Las Estrellas" ("What Stars Wear"). The headline of the article was hand lettered in a lovely Art Deco monoline sans serif, which is now available as Wardrobe JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Pen Nouveau JNL is a perfect example of the fluid, free-form pen lettering popularized during the Art Nouveau era of the early 1900s. The type face was modeled from the lettering on the cover of a piece of sheet music from 1911 entitled "If You Talk in Your Sleep, Don't Mention My Name".

A ìthick and thinî Art Deco sans lettering design was found within the pages of the May, 1936 issue of Modern Screen magazine. This condensed typeface has rounded terminals, similar to that made by a round nib lettering pen. This is now available as Deco Film Ad JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Tasty and sweet, Postre is a sleek high contrast serif type with certain Art Nouveau influence. Postre is excellent for headlines, packaging, posters and any other display use conveying an elegant impression. The 1939 French publication “Modèles de lettres modernes par Georges Léculier” ( “Models of Modern Letters by Léculier”) presented some unique and stylized type designs with Art Deco influence. An Art Nouveau alphabet that has stood the test of time, Nicholson French, by legendary sign-painter Frank H. Atkinson, is over 100 years old and going strong. Another one of those faces that caught my eye in one of my art deco type books, and I wanted it. After I finished the face, I noticed that there is a more clean-cut version of this face in digital format, but my version retains more of the funkiness of the original drawings.

Cilager is a Modern Serif Typeface that gives a romantic feel to every curve. One of the examples in the 1916 publication “Baker’s Showcard Book” [an early 20th Century instructional book on sign lettering] was simply called “Plain Poster”. Somewhat Art Nouveau in style, but with many ‘nonconforming’ character shapes and widths, this novelty design is available digitally as Free Form Showcard JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Avenida was created by architect and designer John Chippindale in 1994 and is a constructed typeface that leaves a cool, sophisticated impression. An Art Deco typeface inspired lettering found on buildings constructed in Spain's Andalucian region in the 1930's and 1940's. Avenida is best suited to headlines and short to middle length texts.

The cover of "Intermediate Steps to the Band" (an instructional book for marching band originally published by Mills Music in 1947) featured the title in a hand lettered multi-line sans serif with Art Deco influence. Re-drawn as a digital typeface named Marching Band JNL, it is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Italian Futurism (1908-43) was one of the 20th century's first and most influential avant garde art movements. Futurist typography sought to disrupt traditional notions of harmony, space and composition on the printed page. The bold and jarring shapes of this set faithfully recall a tumultuous era in both Italian history and Italian graphic design.

The antique sheet music for the 1915 song "A Girl in Your Arms is Worth Two in Your Dreams" had its title hand lettered in a Roman typeface that reflected ever so slightly the Art Nouveau influences of the time. This design is now available as Romance Roman JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

WL Dot Matrix is another typographic flashback to computing of the mid 1980s, when 9-pin dot-matrix printers were the state of the art. Compatible with the cleaner WL Rasteroids family, WL Dot Matrix explores some of the common failure modes of old printers: smudging ribbons, slipped tractor feeds, and gummed up print heads.

Sheet music for a song featured in "East to West", a film starring Mexican bombshell Dolores Del Rio, had the movie's name lettered in a bold sans style with early Art Deco influences. East to West JNL preserves not only the name, but all of the characteristics of this wonderful bit of typographic nostalgia.

The inspiration for this versatile typeface came from both Art Deco and Military sources. A 1930s travel poster from American Airlines had the airline’s name in a classic thick-and-thin Art Deco design of hand lettering. With the addition of angular spurs, some of the characters become semi-serif in nature. This type style is now available as Travel Plans JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.
