Solantra is a solidly crafted handwritten script. I’ve long felt that beautiful writing is more pleasing to the eye than the more attention grabbing swashes and flourishes. That being said, both have their role in design and Solantra has a large slice of each. Solantra combines vintage style handwriting with all its quirks and English Roundhand of that same era. The result is a solid setting script filled with charm and personality. With default Adobe Illustrator settings for Ligatures and Contextual Alternates active, the vintage charm is in full display. Want to add more flair? There are loads of more embellished letters inside the full version. Solantro takes into account how scripts are actually written so that connections from letter to letter are more fluid and rhythmic than the average script font. In natural script/handwriting most letters end at the bottom right and move up to connect with the next. Some letters like o, v, and w, however; end at the top right. Rather than force these letters to dip down and go back up they should ideally connect from that upper right point. This is accomplished through a series of alternate letters and ligatures with extensive contextual feature programming. So, for example, you might get one version of a ligature in the middle of a word and a different one at the beginning or end of that word. Solantra also takes into account another often overlooked feature of natural handwriting. When you write you inevitably pick your pen up from the paper at times. This is often just to reposition the hand, but in the days of writing with dip pens this was also needed to attain a fresh supply of ink. Having these occasional breaks in connections makes the writing less static and more rhythmic. While the Basic versions are limited to a standard character set and several ligatures and alternates for better settings of text, the full pro versions contains 1292 glyphs and an abundance of features. Even with numbers there are options like Oldstyle numbers, fractions, and ordinals. Central European language support is included as well as some select ligatures that use accents. There's an appealing quirkiness about Amrys, which offers a confidently unusual alternative to more conventional designs. Its charm lies in its tapering tips, flexing stems, and unexpected notches, which combine to suggest something of the chiseller's tool at work. As a modulated serif, its letter shapes live between serif and sans serif, lending the design a sense of pleasing irregularity – something that's really highlighted at larger sizes. However this is also a typeface that works for text, injecting rhythm and texture into reading. “It's distinctive, idiosyncratic, and weird,” says its designer, Ben Jones. He started designing Amrys while studying an MA at Reading University, creating it in response to a brief for a magazine typeface. Amrys features an extensive and impressive character set. In addition to Latin, Amrys covers several scripts including Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic and Armenian. The family consists of 8 weights, from Light to Black, with matching italics.

In 1916 the Prang company - still famous for their excellent pens and pencils - commissioned Thomas Woods Stevens to hire the best calligraphers of the era to hand letter sample pages with different Prang pens and in a variety of styles. The resulting book is a font maker's dream, a collection of period lettering samples perfect for making new fonts. One of the sample pages shows off the look of the Spoonbill pen with a set of classic art deco style letters by Charles Earley. This sample is the basis for our Spoonbill font, which includes a full character set, plus character variations for nesting and overlapping, and a small selection of decorative border characters in the art deco style.

Bowler Hand has been created from hand drawn letter forms using a Rotring ink pen which gives the font a great look.

Darby came about while playing with a loaded round-tipped brush. The letters remind me a bit of signage I remember seeing at county fairs in my youth. It's a casual comfortable font that lends itself well to outlining and drop shadows for emphasis. Not intended for long copy, it would work well in headlines or in signage where one is wishing to attract attention.

Finura was inspired by American lettering from the 60s, specially the Stunt Roman for ruling pen and compass presented in the Speedball Textbook for Pen & Brush Lettering by Ross F. George, but also by looking carefully to University Roman characteristics. Finura is an experience on very thin poster typefaces and the possibilities to design extreme delicate typefaces, with plenty details, that sheer simplicity and readability to the classic forms.

London is one of my favourite cities, so it was about time I named a font after it. Well, technically, I named a font after one of London’s districts. Southwark comes from the Anglo-Saxon word Suthriganaweorc, which means ‘Fort of the men of Surrey’. The font Southwork is a handmade Clarendon. I used a Japanese brush pen to create the outlines. I gave the glyphs texture by filling them in with a brush and Chinese ink. Southwark, therefore, has an uneven look and a brushy texture. It looks good on just about anything, but posters, greeting cards and product packaging come to mind.

Henry8 is a historical caps font originally penned in the 16th century. I have extended it to include numbers and a few symbols.

DicSans is a square sans-serif typeface, inspired by Aldo Novarese’s Eurostile, it was meant as a sort of contemporary "open" Eurostile. It is a semi-custom font, designed and expanded according to costumers’ requests, since 2004 up to 2013. For this reason it has many glyph variants (up to three variants per lowercase glyphs and numbers, special smallcaps etc.) and wide language coverage.

Nina™ Family is a new condensed sans serif typeface designed to be as readable as possible at small sizes, whilst squeezing in as many characters per inch as feasibly possible. Nina Family typeface was designed for Microsoft by world renowned type designer Matthew Carter, and hand-instructed by leading hinting expert, Tom Rickner. Gallego Pro is a classical, pen-drawn upright script useful for many applications, e.g. book titles, ads, magazines or any kind of display work.

This 3D lettering font was done with my inky ballpoint pen. Comes with ligatures for double lettering and alternate letters in upper- and lowercase.

ShadyCharacters is an all-caps font with a ziggy, hollow top and a solid bottom. With lots of imagination, you might see the letters as tree-like, hence its name. The ShadyCharactersInside font can be layered over letters of ShadyCharacters to fill in the tops with color.

Matthew Carter has been refining his design for Alisal for so long, he says, that when he was asked to complete the design for the Monotype Library, it was almost as if he were doing a historical revival of his own typeface. The illusion even extended to changes in his work process: although he now does all his preliminary and final drawing on screen, the first trial renderings of Alisal were done as pencil renderings. Alisal is best classified as an Italian old style design. Originally created between the late 15th and mid-16th centuries in northern Italy, the true Italian old styles were some of the first roman types. They tend to be the most calligraphic of serifed faces, with the axis of their curved strokes inclined to the left, as if drawn with a flat-tipped pen or brush. These designs offer sturdy, free-flowing and heavily bracketed serifs, short descenders, and a modest contrast in stroke weight. Alisal has nearly all the classic Italian old style character traits, plus a few quirks of its own. It is calligraphic in nature, with more of a pen-drawn quality than faces like Palatino or Goudy Old Style. It is more rough-hewn than either Goudy's Kennerley or Benton's Cloister, and is generally heavier in weight than most of the other Italian old style designs. One place where Alisal makes a clean break with traditional old style designs is in the serifs. While sturdy and clearly reflecting pen-drawn strokes, Alisal's serifs have no bracketing and appear to be straight strokes crossing the main vertical. Like Caslon or Trajanus, Alisal is a handsome design when viewed as a block of copy. Ascenders are tall and elegant, and serve as a counterpoint to the robust strength of the rest of the design. Alisal is available as a small family of roman and bold with a complementary italic for the basic roman weight, providing all that is needed for the majority of text typography. Alisal is not as well-known as some of Carter's other typefaces, but this lovely and long-incubated design was certainly worth the wait.

Markout is a chunky marker pen font. With a casual style and loose baseline, it's a great display font for titles, headings and logos. The Markout family has regular and alt versions, where some of the characters are different. Most notable is the 'k' in the Alt version this has a more normal size and shape when compared to the regular. Also includes five marker pen emoji ligatures and double letter ligatures.

From the mid -17th century, new commercial writing styles emerged which clear showed the influence of pen-crafted calligraphy. A traditional pen-formed flowing script as the “Citix” font, may be suitable for commemorative letters, invitations cards and the most elegant visual communications projects. Gainsborough - a clean-cut display pack. Gainsborough is a display combo pack of three styles and extra swooshes. Gainsborough fonts are straightforward with characteristic clarity. All the three fonts are designed to play together. Gainsborough is very easy to use. Gainsborough Pen is a clear script inspired by handwriting with pigment pen but polished clean to be legible and inviting. It’s equipped with Contextual Alternates and Standard Ligatures for smooth flow and connections between letters. In addition there’s Stylistic and Swash Alternates for standard characters. Gainsborough Sans is a sturdy street-sans ready for action. It’s has zero contrast and angular geometric shapes. It’s great for bold headlines. Haakke (or Håkke) - a casual, hand drawn (Stabilo OH pen, Fine) font with 4 alternates to all upper and lower case letters (a-z + å ä ö) as well as numbers for a realistic hand written look and feel! “Ligatures” have been created for double letters (TT, tt, ff, ll & LL (open type version of the font and open type compatible layout application required). Of course it holds all(?) the special characters that you will ever need. 451 glyphs... Haakke also includes symbols. Zodiak signs (letter a-l, upper case A-L write the corresponding name of the sign), planet signs (m-z, upper case M-Z write the corresponding name of the planet) triangles, squares and stars (from pentagrams (5 pointed) to Dodecagrams (12 pointed). (Write a 4, or shift-4 ("euro-sign", european keyboard, or "dollar sign", american keyboard) before your star or triangle and you will get a circle around it).

I am (trying to) learn Danish using an app on my phone. The grammar and vocabulary are not that difficult, as the Danish language is very close to the Dutch language. The pronunciation, however, is quite tricky. Words look simple when written down, but when pronounced, they sound very different. Take ‘pige’ (‘girl’) - it reads ‘pee-guh’, right? Well, it is pronounced ‘pee-uh’. Or how about ‘brød’ (meaning bread)? If you keep in mind that the o-slash is pronounced as the ‘i’ in bird - almost like ‘uh’, it should be br-uh-d, right? Wrong again. It is pronounced br-uh-l. Aaargghh! I will succeed, hopefully! Utroligt is a Danish word meaning ‘incredible’. It is a nice, uncomplicated all caps font. I made it with a cheap rollerball pen and some nice French paper. Comes with double letter ligatures and all the diacritics you’d like - including the danish ones.

This caps only hand lettering could have come from an architect. Speedy written on a 45 degree slope with a bold felt pen or brush.

Flood was designed by Joachim M�ller-Lanc� and is not just another handwritten face. At smaller point sizes it exhibits the natural, dynamic, and spontaneous flow of felt tip marker writing. At larger sizes Flood is immediate, urgent, and provocative in its stylized detailing, without being overly dramatic. Flood�s energetic rhythm is well suited for informal menus, logos, and brief ad copy, as well as personal correspondence.

This slinky number will seduce you with its linking letters and special ligatures. Brimley's strokes are tight and sharp, and its characters are tied together with slender, whispy hooks. Although its elegance is timeless, this is a style that typifies lettering of last century's late '50s and early '60s. Chank Co. intern Tim Drabandt created Brimley with inspiration from antique type books. He named the font after Wilford Brimley. You know... the chubby old guy who tells you to check your blood sugar and eat your Grape Nuts and Quaker Oats. Haven't you ever seen Cocoon?
