M Gothic Gold PRC is a modulated style Simplified Chinese typeface. Modulated font designs have apparent thick-thin contrast at the strokes, and often include special design characteristics at entry, finial and transitional points of the strokes. Modulated Simplified Chinese font design category includes traditional Song, Ming or Fang Song style typefaces which are popular for continuous reading.

Ovidius is a formal script with solid structure. Characters present a look and feel of an ancient pen to very rough paper. The Ovidius family designed by Thaddeus Szumilas is now part of GroupType, a foundry specializing in period and revival typeface designs. These designs have not only important historical design roots, they possess great contemporary appeal.

This family started as a graduation project back in 2009, coming from calligraphic studies and sketches with a broad nib pen, based on humanist proportions and inclination. A June 18, 1929 issue of the Hollywood trade paper “The Film Daily” ran an ad for a film called “The Power House”. The film’s title was hand lettered in an extra bold sans serif design with strong Art Deco influences. This is now available digitally as Deco Power JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

An exquisite Didot font in 18 series Ambroise is a contemporary interpretation of various typefaces belonging to Didot’s late style, conceived circa 1830, including the original forms of g, y, &; and to a lesser extent, k. These unique glyphs are found in Gras Vibert, cut by Michel Vibert. Vibert was the appointed punchcutter of the Didot family during this period. It is the Heavy, whom sources were surest that Jean François Porchez has been used as the basis for the design of the typeface family. In the second half of the 19th century, it was usual to find fat Didots in several widths in the catalogs of French type foundries. These same typefaces continued to be offered until the demise of the big French foundries in the 1960s. Ambroise attempts to reproduce more of what we see printed on paper in the 19th century; a more accurate representation of Didot punches. So, the unbracketed serifs are not truly square straight-line forms but use tiny transitional curves instead. The result on the page appears softer and less straight, particularly in larger sizes. Meteora is a font designed for headlines by Carlos Fabian Camargo Guerrero. Its purpose is to be useful tool for solving decorative problems in graphic design which require broken letters without ascending and descending strokes. Due to its vertical and horizontal proportions these letters are compact, appealing and special to compose headlines and featured with worn look in covers, magazines, posters and advertising material. The first Meteora sketches were made by hand, photocopying and deforming letters of an old Letraset catalog, specifically from slab serif typefaces from the Nineteenth Century. Hence, uppers cases and lower cases were merged in the same height x, obtaining a narrow width, endings with some serifs and stencil cuts here and there. The amount of low contrast between thick and thin strokes brings strength and consistency with the contours apparently brokens. Thus, developed features slab serif and sans-serif proposing empty and full shapes connoting decomposition and noise; and from a rigorous process of scanning letters I set up damaged letters, but drawn with the greatest possible thoroughness and high definition in 438 glyphs per font. Finally, in regular and bold variables I included opentype features with some discretionary ligatures and a few titling alternates. In Meteora bold all glyphs are framed simulating the effect of letters cut out of paper.

The Pommes font originates from my mid seventies potato punchcuttings at artschool. Since I’m living in a potato republic (NE of the province of Groningen) I got inspired to continue. Angustina is an elegant display typeface, it takes inspiration from classic letter styles. I chose the font name after reading the classic Italian novel “The Tartar Steppe”. I was inspired by the sickly, stoic and mysterious man who differs for his willingness to stay at Fort Bastiani. Angustina conveys distress and stinging sensation with extreme contrasts between thick and thin strokes and exasperated serifs. The alternate of hairline and bracketed serifs gives Angustina a modern and military appearance.

Rebellious Brush marker font is a hand lettered brush script. What fun I've had from the beginning using pencil on paper to practising creating the glyphs with several types of markers! You'll notice that there are a couple of swashes in the preview pictures - I haven't advertised these because they are only accessible via a glyphs panel using the OTF file supplied.

Cordel Interior family draws inspiration from covers of 'cordel literature’, - small booklets of popular story-poems that played an essential role on the folk-popular cultural life of Brazil. Printed in coarse paper, usually with an woodcut illustration and lettering in the front, these booklets were sold on the streets, in marketplaces and town squares, hung in a cord - therefore the name ‘cordel’.

Amateur Printer JNL is comprised of letters and numbers from one of the rubber stamp sign printing sets that were popular with children up until about the 1960s. The letters were printed out on paper, then scanned and converted into a font... leaving all of the rough edges and defects intact to give the look of authentic rubber stamp impressions.

Lectores is based on 18th century chronicles of Benedictine monastery manuscript, so it is definitely oldish, rough but elegant. Thanks to many ligatures and alternate characters it is varied handwriting font. Lectores is decorative, it works nice with many occasional papers such as invitations, stationery and quotations. It is perfect not only for oldstyle and antique typography but also for modern designs.

Toyprint JNL is based on scanned print samples of a toy rubber stamp set imported from Japan circa the 1930s. No kerning and a very limited character set, but fun and nostalgic nonetheless. NOTE: Large size rendering of the type will give the appearance of cut paper rather than rubber stamp impressions due to the nature of the scans for this font.
