News Ticker JNL was inspired by some 1930s film footage of the famous electronic message sign that surrounded the New York Times building in Times Square. A blank panel is located on both the regular and broken vertical bars for use in spacing between words.

Jerky Tash is supposed to look somewhat handwritten, that’s why it has got jumpy letters, different sized serifs and a loose kerning. The font is spaced to look okay when used without kerning, but the font definitely deserves to be viewed using the kerning pairs!

Ronde Script (Ronde meaning "A kind of script in which the heavy strokes are nearly upright, giving the characters when taken together a round look.") is based on the original design named Parisian Ronde released in 1878 by the Chappelle Foundry in Paris. Other versions of this script include Inland French Script, French Script, French Plate, and Typo Upright. Different type foundries tied to the releases of this design include Mayeur (Paris), Stephenson Blake (London), Bernhardt Brothers & Spindler (Chicago), and ATF (Elizabeth, NJ). This style of script has been a very popular choice in designing wedding invitations and so many other formal announcements for over 130 years. Its very readable, formal and elegant with an antique or retro feel.

Birdcage was designed from a very short lettering sample in Rob Roy Kelly's American Wood Type book, from the image I created a complete font plus a regular version with lowercase. In the past banner style fonts would limit you to a monospaced look, so how do you kern a banner font? Well, with today's OpenType font format the solution is simple, draw the kerning pairs together as one character glyph and place them inside the font then use auto substitution to access those characters when needed. Birdcage (OpenType version) includes 249 auto ligature kerning pairs, to use this feature you will need an application that takes advantage of OpenType features such as Adobe CS products.

Even though the phrase Art Nouveau originated in Paris at the shop of Siegfried Bing, the French preferred to call it Le style moderne. This very sinuous, very Art Nouveau typeface was designed by an E. Mulier around 1894, probably also in Paris. The organic, vine-like curve forms are frequently seen in the art of the period. Examples include the architecture of Victor Horta, the furniture of Henry van de Velde and the jewelry of Max Gradl. Mulier Moderne is an all-cap font with a full Western European character set plus ST and TH ligatures, an alternate ‘E’ and two glyphs of period printer’s cuts. Warning: do not use for extended text. I was doodling away with a sharpie pen on a rainy day. Hey… wait a minute. A rainy day, a font called Rainclouds… Yep, that’s right, it is called Rainclouds for that reason! ;-) Rainclouds is a fat marker font with a lot of texture and a lot of mouth.

Semarang Kolonial is a stylish, all caps Art Deco font. It is not a recreation of a particular typeface; merely my salute to a bygone era and to the birthplace of my father in law, who recently passed away. Semarang Kolonial goes well with the original Semarang font.
