Worldly Even though it’s a new arrival, FS Brabo has seen the world. Designed by a Brazilian working in London and studying in Belgium under a Dutchman, it’s certainly well-travelled. And it was inspired by the extraordinary archive of early book typefaces at the world-renowned Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp, while Fernando Mello was attending Frank Blokland’s Expert class Type Design course at the Plantin Institute of Typography. It was there that Fernando became engrossed in the collection of early metal type, matrices, punches and type samples by figures such as Garamond and Granjon. So much so that he took on the mighty task of developing ‘a beautiful, functional, serifed text font’ of his own. Heroic FS Brabo’s journey from sketch to font family took an epic three years, starting in Antwerp, continuing at Fontsmith in London, and reaching its conclusion back in Fernando’s home city of São Paulo. No wonder Fernando was reminded of another titanic face-off: that of Antwerp’s Roman hero of legend, Silvius Brabo, and the evil ogre, Antigoon. Brabo came to the town’s rescue after the tyrannical giant had been charging ships’ captains extortionate taxes and chopping off the hands of those who refused to pay up. Having finally downed Antigoon after a long and terrible duel, Brabo cut off the giant’s own hand and threw it into the river Scheldt, unwittingly giving the town its name: the Dutch for ‘hand-throw’ is hand werpen. What better way for Fernando to name his literary typeface than after the hero of Antwerp’s oldest tale? The garalde factor FS Brabo is not a revival, but a very much a contemporary, personal interpretation of a garalde – a class of typeface originating in the 16th century that includes Bembo, Garamond and Plantin, with characteristically rounded serifs and moderate contrast between strokes. Brabo’s ‘ct’ and ‘st’ ligatures, upper-case italic swashes and contextual ending ligatures – ‘as’, ‘is’, ‘us’ – all preserve the beauty and character of traditional typefaces, but its serifs are chunkier than a garalde. Their sharp cuts and squared edges give them a crispness at text sizes, helping to bring a beautifully bookish personality to hardworking modern applications. A workhorse with pedigree It may give the appearance of a simple, four-weight typeface, but FS Brabo has hidden depths beneath its simplicity and beauty. OpenType features such as cap italic swashes, contextual ending swashes – programmed only to appear at the end of words – and stylistic alternatives make this a complete and well-equipped typeface. Comprehensive testing was carried out at text and display sizes, too, to prevent counters from filling in. All of which makes FS Brabo a very modern take on a traditional workhorse serif typeface: colourful and versatile enough to adorn not just editorial projects but also signage, advertising and logotypes.

Barberry is a hand-made brush script typeface equipped with some decorative OTF features, made by Zakhar Yaschin (FontaZY). Barberry font contains stylistic alternates, initial and final alternates (which is duplicated by contextual alternates in the case when ini & fina are not supported), ligatures, titling alternates, small caps and large collection of swashes (additional variants - in Stylistic Set). There are more than 20 Latin and Cyrillic ligatures in the Barberry Letters. It works by default as the standard ligatures, but you can switch it off for design reasons or to select the more appropriate typographic solution in any particular case. Ornamental font Barberry Vigniette has more than 200 pictograms and vignettes that can decorate your typographic layout. All icons are drawn with a brush in the same style as the Barberry Letters. You can use them inside the text lines, or make the ornamental decoration for text, or use separately, without any letters. The dearJoe series of fonts came to life around the year 1999, when I created dearJoe 1, which was a first (and half-assed) attempt to convert my own handwriting into a working font. Being able to type in my own hand had always been a childhood fantasy, and even though I only partly understood the software, a working font was generated and I decided to put it on the internet for people to use in their own personal projects. Which they did: at this moment the dearJoe 1 font has been downloaded millions of times and can be found on Vietnamese riksjas, Tasmanian gyms and chocolate stores on 5th Avenue for instance. The font is not something I am particularly proud of, but it started me of in building what's now the JOEBOB graphics foundry. Inbetween creating other fonts, the dearJoe series has become a theme I revisit every once in a while, trying to create an update on how my handwriting has evolved, along with my abilities in creating fonts that mimic actual handwriting. In the last decade or so I started implementing ligatures and alternate characters, which helped a lot in coming to a result that can almost pass for actual handwriting. The 2019 dearJoe 7 font is the latest addition to this font family. All characters were scanned from handwritten notes, cherrypicking the characters and letter-combinations I liked best. They were written with a Lamy M66 B pen and only minor adjustments were made to the original scans, leaving most little flaws and rough edges as they were for a convincing ball-point on paper result. The font comes with over 150 ligatures, making sure the font has a variated and credible overall look and feel.

Prototype is a typeface with a very contemporary identity crisis—is it old or new? uppercase or lowercase? serif or sans-serif? Prototype tries to be all things to all people. There have been many attempts at creating a universal typeface, one that rationalises the alphabet and removes the inconsistencies of upper and lower case, applying an unreasonable logic to something that has grown organically ...and is already perfectly usable! The original plan for Atlantic was to design a typeface in the Venetian syle of the Renaissance, with handwriting character and large ascenders. There is a wave-rolling unevenness in both the x- and cap-height caused by the strong ductus pointing to the upper right, together with heavily curved serifs, resulting in a very lively image of text on a page. Atlantic – its name reflects the ocean, ships, carriers and loads, tourism and so on. These are the themes Atlantic is best suited for. A set of transfer patterns for sewing decorative monogram initials on clothing was manufactured by Women's Day magazine circa the 1940s. Designed by renowned Copenhagen-born industrial artist and letterer Gustav Boerge Jensen [April 8, 1898 - June 27, 1954], these initials have been redrawn into a digital font entitled Danish Script Initials JNL. Large initials are on the uppercase A-Z keys, while smaller initials are on the lower case a-z keys and are centered to the larger cap height. An ornament is provided on the asterisk key, and can be placed between the small initials and the larger initial for decorative effect.

Homenko was the only Ukrainian typeface for metal type casting developed in the last century. It has already become a 'classic'. Vasyl Homenko worked on it from 1964 to 1967. The typeface successfully combines the qualities of lineal humanist typefaces with the Ukrainian tradition of asymmetrical slab serif. The works on its digitization and further development has been in progress since 2000. The present version contains Latin Extended characters, Cyrillic with stressed alternates and several ornaments based on Vasyl Homenko's works. Songlines is based upon a pen-drawn script drawn by Michael Harvey to illustrate a poem by Johannes Thurman. The expressive and rough-edged letterforms of Songlines do not have any lowercase characters. Instead, alternative uppercase characters occupy their positions. By using a mixture of upper-case and lowercase characters, text can be given a very lively and vigorous character. For example, the two versions of L are designed to overlap and interact whichever way round they are used. The augmented Songlines Plus version, has many alternative characters and ligatures added together with Opentype features to enable their automatic substitution where the application in which they are used permits.

Obvia, a geohumanist type for all media. Obvia appeared as a result of direct observation on typefaces classified as geometric and the plan to explore for the first time width axes - to be published soon - expanding its usability. The idea behind Obvia’s design was to create a distancing from geometrically pure shapes, in this case, square shapes. Then some details were added, such as subtle inktraps, concave endings of the stems and carefully drawn alternate characters, giving a ‘geohumanist’ tone to the font. This first family of Obvia has 9 weights ranging from Thin to Black with their respective italics, delivering a strong typographic identity, from the paper to the pixel.

When teaching font-making at the Art Institute of Tucson, I give my students plenty of lab time to come up with design ideas. I designed Pucky while one class created their fonts. It came about through an idea for a capital A: sort of a triangle with two round sides and a crossbar formed by a circle falling out. (You can see it here.) In drawing that, I hit upon the idea of making the tops of the alphabet sharp and square and the bottoms rounded. (See the whole alphabet here.) Pucky suggests both circus and psychedelia. Hmmmm, does anybody have an “in” at Cirque du Soleil?
